NJ Governor Chris Christie Delivers Keynote Address At Attorney General Curtis Hill’s Symposium On Drug Abuse

0

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Chair of President Trump’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis, spoke today at Attorney General Curtis Hill’s Prescription Drug Abuse & Heroin Symposium.

The Governor delivered the symposium’s keynote address.

“To say that addiction is the number one public health crisis in America is an understatement,” Governor Christie said. “As a nation, we consume 85 percent of the world’s opioid pain killers. In fact, we are losing 142 people a day in our country as a result of an epidemic that is delivering a death toll equivalent to the U.S. enduring another 9-11 attack nearly every three weeks.”

Governor Christie and Attorney General Hill also appeared together at a press conference following the Governor’s speech.

“As we focus daily in Indiana on fighting the drug crisis, we are part of a larger battle being waged all across the nation,” Attorney General Hill said. “We want to collaborate and cooperate with other states to the greatest extent possible. By learning from and supporting one another, we can develop more effective strategies. I appreciate Governor Christie visiting Indiana today to share his own important insights and message.”

In its eighth year, the two-day symposium brings together professionals from multiple fields and disciplines who share a determination to fight prescription drug and heroin abuse. The symposium concludes Tuesday.

Halloween Safety: 5 Tips To Prevent Trick-Or-Treaters From Making A Trip To The ER

0

EVANSVILLE – Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids that allows them to dress up as their favorite characters and decorate for the holiday. To help ensure children enjoy have a safe holiday and avoid a trip to the emergency room, doctors at St. Vincent Evansville, part of Ascension, recommend “five Cs” that everyone should keep in mind for Halloween:

  1. Costumes – Beware of costumes that impair your field of vision, constrict breathing, or prevent your arms and legs from functioning normally. If possible, wear costumes that are easier to see in the dark or are marked with reflective tape. Be mindful that costumes incorporating fake knives, swords and guns can still cause injuries and may even be mistaken as real weapons.
  2. Candy –  Inspect your candy, but the biggest danger comes from choking. Also, be mindful if your child is allergic to certain foods or nuts that can be found in candy. Some households will display a ‘teal pumpkin’ on the doorstep to indicate they are aware of food allergies and have non-food treats available, such as glow sticks or small toys.
  3. Carving – Don’t let children handle knives when carving pumpkins. Adults should also be extra careful when handling sharp objects.
  4. Cars – Trick-or-treaters: Keep an eye out for cars and look both ways while trick-or-treating in the dark. Drivers: Watch out for trick-or-treaters who may dart out into the street.
  5. Candles –  Stay away from open candles and flames from lanterns. Use safer alternatives to candles like flash lights and glow sticks. Also, when choosing a costume, look for flame-resistant fabrics or the label “Flame Resistant.”

Sheriff’s Office Offers Halloween Safety Advice

0

This Halloween the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office will be closely monitoring the residential areas of Vanderburgh County. Sheriff’s deputies will be watching for unsafe, mischievous and suspicious activity.

Sheriff Dave Wedding stated, “With the sun setting just before 6:00 PM, motorists should watch for trick-or-treaters in or near neighborhood roadways and reduce their speed accordingly.”

Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to visit the homes of people they know well and stay within their neighborhood. If trick-or-treaters are going to be meeting with friends to trick-or-treat in other areas, parents are encouraged to check the sex offender website for potential sex offenders in those neighborhoods.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office will be paying special attention to the neighborhoods in which registered sex offenders live. Registered sex offenders who are on parole will be required to: place a sign on their door indicating that their residence will not be giving out candy, keep their exterior lights off, and display no outdoor Halloween decorations. The Sheriff’s Office Sex and Violent Offender Unit and the Indiana Department of Corrections will be making increased random checks on registered sex offenders  to verify their compliance with all stipulations established for them.

The Sheriff’s Office offers the following safety tips to help insure this Halloween is a safe one:

  • Motorists should keep a careful eye out for kids who may be difficult to see and may run unexpectedly from in between parked cars and other places.
  • Trick-or-treating should be done with adult supervision and in groups.
  • Parents, if your trick-or-treaters are old enough to walk the neighborhood on their own, make sure you know their intended route. Provide them with a cell phone and make sure they stay within a familiar area.
  • Trick-or-treaters should never enter the home of someone who is not well known to them.
  • Costumes that do not include a mask or anything that might obscure the child’s vision are preferable.
  • Costumes should be constructed so that children can move easily and not create a tripping hazard.
  • Trick-or-treating should be completed before dark. Trick-or-treaters should have light colored/reflective clothing on and have a flashlight.
  • Parents should inspect all treats before they are eaten. Anything that is not commercially produced or appears to have had the seal or packaging tampered with should be discarded.
  • Homeowners who welcome trick-or-treaters should make sure their homes are well lit and that there are no obstacles to those visiting the home.
  • Homeowners should give commercially produced treats, gift certificates or other non-food related items (school pencils, stickers, etc).
  • If you find anything or see anything suspicious in nature, report it to the Sheriff’s Office via 911.

The men and women of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office hope everyone has a safe and memorable Halloween this year.
