About Warrick Humane Society: Warrick Humane Society, a no-kill shelter located in Newburgh, Indiana. It was founded in 1983 by a handful of dedicated volunteers who rescued lost, injured and neglected animals. Since WHS opened their building in 1997 and began actively working with Animal Control agencies and other rescue organizations, WHS has saved thousands of animals and placed them in loving homes. Warrick Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) no-kill rescue dedicated to improving companion animals’ lives.  WHS does not receive any funding from taxes or any national organizations. WHS is funded entirely by individual and corporate donations, bequests, grants and fundraising events.  Because all animals adopted by WHS are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and microchipped as well as receiving any other special care they may need, finding enough funding is always a challenge.

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Men’s and Women’s Cross Country recently released its 2024 schedule.

The Screaming Eagles have six race days on the slate this Fall, starting with the Sam Bell Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana, August 30. The Sam Bell Invitational marks the first time the Eagles will compete in a cross country meet at Indiana University since the Hoosiers hosted the Indiana Intercollegiate in 2013.

USI gets the chance to preview the Ohio Valley Conference Championship course September 14 when it competes at the University of Tennessee Martin Cross Country OVC Preview in Union, Tennessee. UT Martin will serve as the host institution for this year’s conference meet.

The Eagles travel to Columbia, Missouri, to compete in the University of Missouri’s Gans Creek Classic September 27 before sending a squad to race at the Live in Lou Classic at Tom Sawyer State Park Louisville, Kentucky, on October 5.

USI wraps up the regular-season October 18 when it co-hosts the Angel Mounds Invitational with the University of Evansville at Angel Mounds. This is the second straight season the two universities have combined to host the meet.

The Eagles’ season concludes November 1 when USI competes at the OVC Championships.

This season marks the third year of a four-year transition process to Division I for the Eagles. Both the men’s and women’s squads are looking to capture their first OVC titles in 2024 after both teams finished second at the 2023 OVC Championships. The two teams combined for 41 Great Lakes Valley Conference titles at the Division II level.

Indiana University Athletes, Coaches Conclude 2024 Paris Olympics

0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – As the world celebrates at the Paris 2024 Closing Ceremony, let’s look at what Indiana University’s 20 athletes and coaches accomplished at the Summer Games.

Indiana has tied its second-largest group of Olympians all-time, having produced 20 Olympians in 1976 and a record 23 in 1968. Hoosiers represented nine different countries, marking a school record.

IU totaled three medals – one gold, two silver – in Paris, all coming in the pool for Team USA. Hoosiers delivered seven top five and 17 top-10 performances at the games.

Eight athletes made Olympic debuts in Paris, and seven of those will return to Bloomington to compete collegiately for IU while also seeking qualification for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

In what she has called her final Summer Games, Lilly King helped author one of Team USA’s most memorable moments of the 2024 Olympics. The three-time Olympian swam the breaststroke leg of the women’s 4×100-meter medley relay that won gold and set a world record in 3:49.63. With the victory, the Americans topped the gold medal leaderboard in swimming earning eight over Australia’s seven.

King finishes her Olympic career a six-time medalist and three-time gold medalist and has won a medal at all three Summer Games she has competed in.

Blake Pieroni and Anna Peplowski each helped Team USA secure silver medals in the men’s and women’s 4×200-meter freestyle, respectively, both swimming in prelim heats. In addition, Matt King – transferring into the IU swimming and diving program this fall – won a medal for his preliminary performance in the men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay. Fellow transfer Zalán Sárkány placed 11th in the 1,500-meter free, and 14th in both the 800-meter and 400-meter freestyle events.

First-time Olympian Carson Tyler highlighted IU’s diving performances, just missing out on the podium in the springboard event with a fourth-place finish. Tyler made history this summer as the first American to compete in both individual diving events at an Olympics since 2000. In her third Olympics, Jessica Parratto finished sixth in the women’s synchronized 10-meter competition, and two-time Olympian Andrew Capobianco finished 15th on the springboard.

Mariah Denigan made history participating in the open water swimming event, held in the River Seine. Denigan is Indiana’s first athlete to compete in open water swimming at an Olympics and one of four Americans ever. She placed 16th.

Team Canada finished eighth in Paris with the help of Jessica Gaudreault and Shae La Roche, both participating in their second Summer Games.

Rikkoi Brathwaite represented IU track and field and the British Virgin Islands in Paris. Brathwaite advanced from the 100-meter prelims on his way to a 23rd-place finish in the semifinal.

Olympic History

Few universities, or even nations, can match Indiana University’s Olympic record. Indiana boasts 261 total Olympic berths, representing 30 countries. On 21 occasions, Olympic coaches have come from Indiana.

The Indiana University athlete medal count is at 124 including 61 gold, 25 silver and 38 bronze after the 2020 Tokyo Games. The Hoosiers have earned a medal at every Olympic Games they have competed in except 2004. IU’s most productive year was 1968, with 17 medals for IU competitors in Mexico City.

Phillips becomes RBI king, Otters fall in finale

0

SAUGET, Ill. – Playing for the final time at Grizzlies Ballpark this season, the Evansville Otters dropped the rubber match to the Gateway Grizzlies 5-3 on Sunday night.

Highlighting the game for the Otters (33-44), Dakota Phillips passed John Schultz as the all-time RBI leader in club history with a three-run homer in the eighth inning. He now sits at 223 career RBI, but the moment was bittersweet with his hit producing the only runs of the game for Evansville before they gave back the lead late.

The Grizzlies (46-31) plated the game’s first runs in the third inning. They scored one unearned on an error and led 2-0. Adding in the fourth frame, a solo shot extended the advantage.

No scoring occurred until Phillips’s big shot to right, which tied the game at three. During the home eighth, after a leadoff walk, Gateway jumped back in front with a two-run homer to finalize the scoring.

Jon Beymer (4-2) pitched out of the bullpen and took the loss. Despite not giving up a hit, he exited the game with an inherited base runner who ended up being the winning run. He went two and two-thirds innings in a strong performance.

Although he gave up the lead on the home run, Matt Hickey (4-2) took the win, and former Otter Leoni De La Cruz (Sv. 10) picked up the save.

Matching Gateway, the Otters had six hits and were led by Gary Mattis in a two-hit performance.

Due to a previous postponement, the Otters will play during a regularly scheduled off-day tomorrow against the Schaumburg Boomers to open up a five-game series. Two seven-inning contests will be played in a twin bill on Monday beginning at 5:30 p.m. CT. Coverage is available on the Otters Digital Network and FloBaseball.
