Men’s Basketball Returns Home To Face Oakland City
Aces Play At 1 p.m. On Saturday
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – With trips to Cancun and New Mexico in the rearview mirror, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team returns home to face Oakland City on Saturday at 1 p.m.
In its last action, the Purple Aces dropped a 78-59 contest at New Mexico on Wednesday evening. K.J. Riley was the leading scorer against the Lobos, finishing with a career-high 13 points; Dru Smith chipped in ten.
With Ryan Taylor sidelined for up to six weeks with a foot injury, the door is open for several UE players to step up. At New Mexico, Riley did just that, leading the squad with 13 points while hitting 7 out of 10 free throws in 16 minutes of work. He checks in with 5.0 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while shooting 77.8% from the line on the season.
In his return to the team this year, Blake Simmons has been playing some of his best basketball.  Simmons has scored at least nine points in five of the last six games and is shooting 46.9% from outside, just out of the MVC’s top ten. He has connected on an average of 2.1 triples per game, 7th in the league. Always dependable when he is on the floor, Simmons has played 35.7 minutes per game, ranking third in the conference.
Junior Marty Hill played his first game with the Aces on Wednesday, seeing the floor for 16 minutes while scoring four points and grabbing seven rebounds. Hill made an immediate impact, scoring on his very first possession with the Lobos.
Oakland City stands at 4-2 overall after falling at Ball State on Tuesday by a final score of 81-57. In that contest, Andrew Scott was the leading scorer, posting 18 points and six rebounds while Logan Worthington notched 13 tallies. The Mighty Oaks played extremely well in the opening 20 minutes against the Cardinals, trailing by just two at the half before BSU outscored them, 41-19, in the second half.

Rajala rallies Eagles for 73-67 victory at UIndy
University of Southern Indiana senior forward Julius Rajala (Helsinki, Finland) scored a season-high 24 points and rallied the Screaming Eagles to a 73-67 victory over the University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis, Indiana. USI watched its record to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the GLVC with its first victory at Nicoson Hall since 2012-13, while UIndy, which received votes for the top 25 polls last week, goes to 5-2 overall, 1-1 GLVC.
The Eagles and the Greyhounds battled to a 10-10 tie through the first eight minutes before UIndy methodically built a 10-point lead, 30-20, with just under four minutes left in the half. Rajala ignited the Eagles as they battled back in the final minutes of the first half, scoring six of his 10 first half points to lead an 11-2 run that got USI to within one at the intermission, 32-31.
Rajala continued the Eagles’ run into the second half, extending it to 13-2, with the first bucket after halftime that got USI its first lead since the opening minutes of the first half, 33-32. The senior forward would score eight of USI’s first 11 points of the second half as the Eagles and Greyhounds traded buckets through the first five minutes of the final half.
After finding themselves down four points, 46-42, Rajala propelled the Eagles on another run as USI exploded on a 20-2 offensive sprint to lead by 14 points, 62-48, with 6:10 to play. Rajala added another six points during the run, while junior guard Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana) and freshman forward Emmanuel Little (Indianapolis, Indiana) dropped in four points each.
The Greyhounds, however, were not ready to concede the win to the Eagles, going on a 17-6 spurt to pull to within three points, 68-65, with 27 seconds to play. USI, which scored its last 11 points from the free throw line, sealed the game in the final seconds on a pair of free throws by Stein and three of four from junior forward Jacob Norman (Evansville, Indiana) to close out the 73-67 victory.
Individually for USI, Rajala scored his season-best and game-high 24 points by hitting a blistering 12-of-15 from the field. Stein followed with 13 points, while senior guard Marcellous Washington (Lexington, Kentucky) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.
The Eagles will be idle for the next 14 days before returning to the friendly surroundings of the Physical Activities Center to play Urbana University December 15 at 7 p.m. USI has a 5-0 all-time series lead versus Urbana, 4-0 at the PAC.
Dahlstrom’s career day, big third quarter lift Eagles over Houn
Senior forward Morgan Dahlstrom (Grayslake, Illinois) scored a career-high 35 points as No. 14 University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball rallied from a nine-point first half deficit to defeat host University of Indianapolis, 73-66, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference bout Saturday afternoon.
Dahlstrom went 15-of-20 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, while grabbing nine rebounds as the Screaming Eagles earned their eighth straight win.
USI (8-0, 2-0 GLVC) used a dominating effort in the third quarter that saw the Eagles outscore the Greyhounds, 21-5. The Eagles held UIndy to just 1-of-12 (.083) shooting and forced the Greyhounds into six third-quarter turnovers as they turned a 41-37 halftime deficit into a 58-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
UIndy (1-7, 0-2 GLVC), which trailed 71-54 with four minutes to play in the game, made a late charge to make things interesting; but the damage the Eagles inflicted in the first 15 minutes of the second half proved to be too much for the Greyhounds to overcome.
In addition to Dahlstrom, who also had a pair of blocks, the Eagles got 13 points from senior guard/forward Kaydie Grooms (Marshall, Illinois) as well as nine points, six assists and four steals from junior guard Alex Davidson (Salem, Indiana). Junior forward Kacy Eschweiler (St. Charles, Missouri) added eight points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks to the Eagles’ cause.
Senior guard Martha Burse had 28 points and five steals to lead the Greyhounds.
The Eagles return to action December 16 at 3 p.m. when they resume non-conference play against NAIA opponent Harris-Stowe State University at the Physical Activities Center. USI visits 2017 NCAA II Tournament participant Lincoln Memorial University December 19 before finishing the non-conference slate December 31 against Grace College at the PAC.
