Vectren To Complete Home Energy Assessment

0

With heating season here, Vectren is encouraging customers to evaluate their energy usage by participating in a no-cost home energy assessment. Since the program was first offered in 2011, Vectren has provided assessments to more than 21,000 customers. If a customer owns their home and it is more than five years old, an in-home energy assessment is available as part of Vectren’s provided electric service. Vectren also offers an income-qualified weatherization program to Vectren customers who meet household size and income guidelines. Vectren has completed more than 550 income-qualified assessments with a goal of servicing another 100 homes before the end of the year.

An energy efficiency advisor will do a walkthrough of the home to understand energy usage and the efficiency of the heating and cooling equipment. Upon completion of the assessment, the energy efficiency advisor will give you a personalized home energy report with a prioritized action plan for additional energy-saving efforts for your home.

“Vectren offers home energy assessments as well as income-qualified weatherization services at no cost to assist our customers in identifying ways to make their homes more energy efficient and lower usage,” said Brad Ellsworth, president of Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana-South. “With winter ahead of us, now is the perfect time to schedule an assessment and make some energy-saving improvements.”

During the assessment, customers may receive energy saving products, such as:

  • Faucet aerators
  • Energy-efficient light bulbs
  • LED night lights
  • High-efficiency shower heads
  • Pipe wrap
  • Furnace filter whistle

To qualify, it must have been at least three years since the last home assessment. The assessment takes approximately one hour to complete. Customers can schedule their appointments online at www.vectrenhomeassessment.com or by calling 1-855-5390 to speak to a customer service representative.

YESTERYEAR: The Trocadero by Pat Sides

3

The Trocadero, built soon after the flood of 1937 receded, was located near Dade (now Ellis) Park in an area called “no man’s land.” Despite its remote location, the nightclub was one of the most lively entertainment venues in the Tri-State until it closed in 1951 after a federal investigation.

Its reputation as a lavish supper club and gambling casino during the Big Band era attracted huge crowds, including soldiers from Camp Breckinridge, who danced to the live music of Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and other musicians. The “Troc,” seen here during remodeling in 1982, also housed a skating rink, antiques store, the Job Corps Center, and other enterprises over the years. On January 8, 1990, the stucco building burned to the ground. (Photographer: Orville Jaebker)

Appeals court orders fee reimbursement for indigent defendant

0

Olivia Covington for www.theindianalawyer.com

A Marion County man found to be indigent is entitled to a reimbursement for the $740 in fees imposed on him by the probation department after the Indiana Court of Appeals found the Marion Superior Court abused its discretion by letting the probation department impose fees when it had not authorized such fees.

In Adam Whitaker v. State of Indiana, 49A02-1706-CR-1162, Adam Whitaker was found guilty of domestic battery and invasion of privacy, both as Class A misdemeanors. The Marion Superior Court found Whitaker indigent for fines and costs and wrote in its sentencing order that it was assessing $0 in fees against him.

However, a bond release memo from the probation department said Whitaker owed $740 for a bond paid by the Marion County Clerk’s Office. The request for the $740 to be transferred to the clerk’s office was approved, prompting Whitaker’s instant appeal.

On appeal, Whitaker argued it was error for the probation department to assess fees against him when the trial court did not impose fees as part of his probation order. Indiana Court of Appeals Judge Elaine Brown agreed, drawing on precedent from De La Cruz v. State, 80 N.E. 3d 210 (Ind. Ct. App. 2017), to support the appellate panel’s reversal of the imposition of fees on Whitaker.

“We stated that, ‘(a)lthough De La Cruz’ sentencing and probation orders referred to a ‘sliding scale for probation fees’ and the trial court ‘order(ed) probation, if there are any fees associated with non-reporting, to asses (De La Cruz’s) ability to pay,’ the trial court did not impose probation fees,’” Brown wrote of the De La Cruz holding. “We held that, ‘…the probation order included a ‘monetary obligations’ section with an ‘ordered amount’ column in which all the rows for specific fees were either blacked out or blank,’ and that ‘(s)uch a probation order, along with the absence of a clear statement imposing probation fees, shows the trial court’s intent not to impose such fees.’”

Similarly, because the trial court did not order probation fees, it abused its discretion when it authorized the probation department to impose the $740. Thus, the fees were reversed, and the case was remanded to reimbursement Whitaker.

Four Hoosiers Earn Weekly Big Ten Honors

0

The No. 1/9 Indiana University swimming and diving teams had four members honored by the Big Ten for their efforts last week at the Purdue Invitational.

Lilly King and Blake Pieroni were named Big Ten Swimmers of the Week, while Grace Haskett and Bruno Blaskovic were named Big Ten Freshmen of the Week.

Pieroni earns weekly honors for the second-straight week and for the fourth time this year, while King has been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the third time this year. The rookie of the week honor is the second for Haskett and the first for Blaskovic.

King and Haskett helped the No. 9-ranked Hoosiers win the eight-team Purdue Invitational last weekend. King won three individual events – the 200 IM (1:55.96), the 100 breaststroke (59.12) and the 200 breaststroke (2:10.99) – with NCAA B cut times.

The duo combined to help IU win the 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay as well. The highlight was the 200 free relay that set a school record with a time of 1:28.95, which Haskett led off with a school record 50 freestyle leg of 22.10.

In the 200 (1:34.58) and 400 medley (3:32.04) relays, King and Haskett helped Indiana post NCAA A cuts. IU’s mark in the 200 medley relay is the best in the country this year, while the 400 medley relay time is the third-best.

Individually, Haskett won the 50 (22.19) and 100 freestyle (48.72) events with a pair of NCAA B cuts. The freshman also helped IU win the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:16.60.

For the No. 1 Hoosier men, Pieroni was dominant over the three days, winning two individual events – the 100 freestyle (42.10) and 200 freestyle (1:32.33) – with NCAA A cuts. Pieroni’s time in the 200 is the best in the nation, while his mark in the 100 is second-best.

The senior also helped IU win the 200 medley relay (1:25.09), 400 medley relay (3:05.57) and the 800 freestyle relay (6:17.75). Indiana recorded NCAA A cuts in both the 400 medley relay and 800 free relay, while the 200 medley relay earned a B cut. The Hoosiers’ time in the 400 medley relay is the best in the country, while the time in the 800 free relay is second-fastest.

Blaskovic had a great showing for the Hoosiers at the Purdue Invitational, posting NCAA B cuts in three individual events, finishing in the top-five in each one.

Blaskovic placed second in the 50 freestyle (19.76) and the 100 freestyle (43.36) and took fourth in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 47.88.

The No. 1/9 Indiana Hoosiers men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in the pool on Wednesday, Dec. 20 when the team takes on No. 11/24 Arizona State in a dual meet in Tempe, Ariz.

Holiday hazards: Doctors offer 4 safety tips to help you avoid the ER this Thanksgiving

0

Thanksgiving and other holidays are fast approaching, which often means an increased risk of injury opportunities on the road, in the kitchen and in the yard.

Dr. Otto Susec at St. Vincent Evansville, said some of the most common injuries treated in the emergency room are from car accidents, cooking, playing outdoor sports like football and putting up holiday decorations. St. Vincent Evansville is part of Ascension, the nation’s largest nonprofit health system and the world’s largest Catholic Health system.

There are nearly 38,000 unintentional motor vehicle deaths in the U.S. per year, according to the most recent data from The Centers from Disease Control and Prevention. In addition, Thanksgiving is the most common day for home cooking fires to occur, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Here are 4 safety tips to keep in mind as you prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday:

  1. In the kitchen: Watch out for burns and wear proper clothing to protect yourself. If you’re frying a turkey, cook it outside and wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants. Never attempt to deep fry a frozen bird.
  2. On the road: Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination to avoid speeding and feeling rushed. Don’t drive while tired.
  3. In the yard: Some families like to through the football around before turkey time. Pace yourself and be weary of sprains, strains and fractures.
  4. Up on the ladder: Falls on ladders happen frequently so make sure it is on a flat, dry and even surface. Don’t overreach and support the ladder at its base, either with another person holding it in place or by driving a stake into the ground at the base.
