Bitter Cold Forces Spike In Gas Deliveries

Evansville, Ind. – Extreme temperatures the last half of December 2017 through the first half of January this year have led to gas usage in volumes which rival the highest ever seen. The volume of gas delivered through Vectren’s 3,200-mile pipeline network to its 110,000 customers in southwest Indiana from Dec. 15, 2017 through Jan. 15, 2018 is projected to be among the highest ever delivered.

“It goes without saying the bitter cold weather has forced furnaces to work harder, and the spike in gas deliveries demonstrates just how cold it’s has been over the past few weeks,” said Brad Ellsworth, president of Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana – South.

The average customer will see a bill that is 25 to 30 percent higher than the bill they received during this same four-week period last year.

“With usage up this sharply, customers will see higher bills than last winter, and we encourage those that are challenged to pay to reach out to us for payment options,” added Ellsworth. “On a positive note safe, reliable delivery is enhanced with the Smart Energy Future infrastructure projects that Vectren continues to perform on our energy delivery system.”

Customers who need assistance managing costs should contact Vectren at 1-800-227-1376. Qualifying customers can set up a payment arrangement whereby they can pay the bill in smaller increments over a set period of time. This is a free service with no interest charges. In addition, Vectren can offer guidance on income-qualified energy assistance. Energy efficiency tips and resources can be found at Vectren.com/saveenergy.

Customers utilizing electric space heating can expect to see a difference in bills as well. Bills during this same 30 day timeframe due to extremely cold temperatures are forecasted to increase around 25 percent.

USI Board of Trustees approves new program in electrical engineering

At its regular meeting on Thursday, January 11 in Indianapolis, the University of Southern Indiana Board of Trustees approved a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) program to be offered through the Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education beginning in fall 2018. The proposed degree program moves next to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education for approval.

“We are very excited about the USI Board of Trustees approval of a new discipline-specific program in electrical engineering. We hope to offer this program in the near future in response to a regional and statewide need for electrical engineers,” said Dr. Zane Mitchell, dean of the Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education. “Our discipline-specific offerings of mechanical and manufacturing engineering have been tremendously successful; graduates from those programs are already having an impact on our local economy. We expect similar results from the Electrical Engineering Program.”

The BSEE program will offer students hands-on learning experiences, opportunities to participate in co-operative education and internships, and student organizations that participate in national engineering competitions. Indiana’s Department of Workforce Development website projects that growth in electrical engineering jobs will be 3 percent for the state and 7.3 percent for the Evansville area through 2024.

Honorary doctorates approved for Fuquays, Melton

The USI Board of Trustees approved the conferral of honorary doctoral degrees, the highest form of recognition by the University, to Dan and Janet Fuquay and to Chris Melton ’72. All degrees will be awarded at the spring 2018 Graduate Commencement ceremony on Friday, April 27.

Doctor of laws degrees will be presented to Dan and Janet Fuquay, life-long Evansville residents and entrepreneurs, who demonstrate the highest level of involvement with the University and commitment to its mission and vision through endowed scholarships, leadership and planned gifts.

A doctor of laws degree will also be presented to Melton, president of Field & Main Bank and 1972 USI graduate with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, whose legacy of commitment spans five decades. Through his involvement with Southern Indiana Higher Education, Inc. (SIHE) and the USI Foundation Board, he has been a dedicated leader and advocate for the University

Stocking Up Before Wintry Weather

 A Winter Storm Warning is in effect across much of the Tri-State from 9PM through Friday 9PM as significant ice and snow heads this way. This all after highs reached the 60s Tri-State wide today.

Friday morning is shaping up to be a travel nightmare across the Tri-State with freezing rain, sleet and snow on the way. Everyone from authorities to parents are getting ready for what could be a messy day.

Sargent Todd Ringle of the Indiana State Police says, “There will probably be quite a few delays and a lot of cancellations, but when a weather event starts in the morning that normally creates more problems.”

If you have to bear the elements Friday morning, be safe and use caution. But if you get a day off from work and school I hope you bought the necessary food to keep you going.

The Shnucks on Green River road in Evansville was busy with people buying up some last minute items before the bad weather arrives.

While a winter storm is a good excuse to eat your favorite junk food, shopper Kelli Ferris is using the impending wintry weather to keep up with her New Year’s resolutions. “So a veggie chilly is always good, for some comfort food chili is always good, but I’m always getting some root vegetables as well, you know, doing more grounding for the new year, so hopefully that will keep me warm.

If veggie chili and healthier alternatives aren’t quite your thing when snowed in, you can stick with your favorite comfort food and have a little balance too.

Shopper Lucy Himstedt says, “Well I’ve been trying to be good these last six months, and except it looks like a good excuse to eat all the foods you shouldn’t, make some cookies, so I’m going to get the stuff for that, I already got some veggies so I can clear my conscious with that.
