Vincennes University achieves 100% acceptance rate for pharmacy schools nationwide for 15 consecutive years

0

VINCENNES, Ind. July 18, 2024 – Vincennes University proudly announces an extraordinary milestone: The College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics boasts a perfect, 100% acceptance rate for its graduates into pharmacy schools nationwide for an impressive 15 consecutive years.

This outstanding achievement spotlights the University’s commitment to academic excellence and its dedication to preparing students for successful careers in the pharmaceutical industry.

VU’s Pre-Pharmacy and Clinical Sciences associate degree program is designed to seamlessly transition graduates into pharmacy school, where they can earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

Recent graduates of VU’s Pre-Pharmacy and Clinical Sciences program have successfully enrolled in the best pharmacy schools, including Purdue University, University of Kentucky, and Butler University.

“Vincennes University provided me with the knowledge needed to equip me for pharmacy school at Purdue,” 2022 VU graduate Ainsley Rodrick said. “I certainly was academically prepared for pharmacy school. The opportunity to easily converse with professors and advisors served as an advantage to my studies. I was able to reach out when needed and receive one-on-one attention during office hours, a feat that not many colleges can boast!”

U.S. News and World Report ranks the pharmacist profession in the Top 15 of the Best Paying Jobs and within the Top 100 Best Jobs overall. In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 13,400 openings for pharmacists yearly, on average, between 2022 and 2032, highlighting a sustained demand for professionals in this rewarding field. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median annual wage for pharmacists is $136,030.

VU’s Pre-Pharmacy program provided Rodrick with the knowledge, skills, and tools to transition successfully to Purdue’s Doctor of Pharmacy Program.

“When transferring to Purdue from Vincennes University, I was going from smaller class sizes to my cohort of approximately 150 students,” Rodrick said. “Luckily, the support of VU allowed me to practice attending help sessions and office hours outside of normal class time. When I started at Purdue, I felt comfortable attending help sessions and office hours, knowing that I could reach out to my professors and teaching assistants.”

In addition to her studies, Rodrick is a peer mentor, assisting Purdue Pre-Pharmacy students with their coursework and preparing them for the pharmacy school application process. She also works part-time at Good Samaritan in Vincennes as a pharmacy technician. After completing her Doctor of Pharmacy degree, the Bruceville, Indiana, native plans to return to Knox County to work in a pharmaceutical setting, such as a hospital or local pharmacy.

VU continues to be a leader in providing high-quality, affordable education and fostering student success. The University’s steadfast commitment to its students’ futures is reflected in this extraordinary 15-year achievement.

Peplowski, Tyler Named IU Athletes of the Year

0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced its winners of the IU Athlete of the Year award for the 2023-24 school year on Wednesday (July 17), recognizing two athletes from the Indiana swimming and diving program.

Juniors Carson Tyler and Anna Peplowski led the men’s and women’s programs to Big Ten Championships and elite national finishes and combined for 10 All-America performances at the NCAA Championships. Both will represent Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Tyler is the first U.S. male diver since 2000 to qualify for the Olympics in both the 3-meter and 10-meter individual events in diving after winning the platform event and finishing second on the springboard at U.S. Olympic Trials in June.

Tyler had one of the most successful individual diving seasons in NCAA history, winning NCAA and conference championships on the both the 3-meter springboard and platform as well as medals on the 1-meter board at each level. His 56 points earned at the NCAA Championships outscored every other diving team. He was named the CSCAA Diver of the Year, Big Ten Diver of the Year and Big Ten Diver of the Championships.

Peplowski’s fifth-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle at U.S. Olympic Trials earned her a spot on Team USA’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay, using the momentum of a career-best year at the collegiate level.

The freestyle specialist is now a school record holder in six short course events following her junior season in which she medaled in two events and totaled seven All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. Peplowski highlighted her NCAA program with a silver medal in the 200-yard freestyle and bronze in the 500 free.

Peplowski led the IU women to their first Big Ten Championship since 2019, finishing runner-up or better in six events – including four individual or relay conference titles. The junior led off IU’s dramatic 400-yard freestyle relay result that clinched the Big Ten team title by one-half of a point.

VU’s Damarien Yates commits to play at Memphis

0

VINCENNES, Ind. – Trailblazer Damarien Yates (Somerville, Tenn.) announced earlier this week his plans to continue his basketball career in the fall by committing to play at the University of Memphis.

“Memphis is home,” Yates said. “I think this is the perfect fit both academically and athletically. This Memphis team is special and I think it’s going to be a fun ride. Lastly, it’s the legendary Coach Penny Hardaway.”

Yates burst onto the scene last season as a freshman for the Blazers, scoring in double figures in two of his first three collegiate games.

Yates’ best scoring stretch with the Blue and Gold came with a four game streak of scoring in double figures which began when he scored 23 points, including hitting a buzzer beater to give VU a win over Sauk Valley Community College in Iowa.

Yates set his Vincennes career-high in points in February after scoring 24, including hitting six of 10 from three-point range in VU’s win over Southwestern Illinois College.

Yates would save his best for last however, showing up on the big stage to score 22 points and grab seven rebounds in VU’s NJCAA Division I National Tournament game vs. Odessa College.

Yates would close out his Vincennes career with 245 points, 156 rebounds, 37 assists and 24 blocks, for an average of 7.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Yates was one of only three Trailblazers last season to play in all 34 games, along with sophomore Karyiek Dixon (Enfield, London, UK), who signed with NCAA Division II Emporia State University last month and freshman Lebron Thomas (Bishopville, S.C), who will be returning to VU for his sophomore season this year.

Yates is the sixth Trailblazer to announce their plans for the upcoming season with NJCAA All-American Michael Osei-Bonsu (Bolingbrook, Ill.) headed to Missouri State University, Victor Lado (Louisville, Ky.) signing with Colorado State-Pueblo, Karyiek Dixon heading to Emporia State University and Kris and Kent King (Washington, D.C.) signing to play at Chaminade University.

Together, this group helped guide the Trailblazers to a 30-4 record last season, including winning the NJCAA Division I Region 24 Championship and earning a spot in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.

“My favorite moments at Vincennes were spent with my teammates,” Yates added. “Talking, laughing and learning together.”

“Vincennes University taught me mental toughness on and off the court,” Yates said. “I matured quickly and had to learn to do things on my own. I learned how to manage time, communicate effectively and network appropriately.”

Yates will be joining a Memphis Tigers squad coming off of a 22-10 season last year, including an 11-7 record in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) under Head Coach and former NBA All-Star Penny Hardaway.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department would like to congratulate Damarien Yates on his commitment to continuing his education at the University of Memphis and wishes him good luck as he continues his basketball career next season.

Joel Zimba named Executive Deputy AD for External Relations for UE Athletics

Zimba brings a wide range of athletics experience to the Purple Aces

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville Director of Athletics Dr. Kenneth “Ziggy” Siegfried has announced the hiring of Joel Zimba as the Executive Deputy Athletics Director for External Relations.  Zimba joins the Purple Aces following a 5-year stint as the District Director of Athletics & Activities at Verona (Wisc.) Area School District.

“We are excited to welcome Joel Zimba and his family to Evansville. Joel is a leader with infectious energy, values teamwork and relationships, and understands the big picture,” Siegfried exclaimed.  “His experience as a District Athletics Director for the last five years will serve him well in this important role for UE Athletics.”

In his time at Verona, Zimba spearheaded all facets of developing, implementing, and improving school athletics programs and events.  One of the main highlights of his tenure was his work in orchestrating a large-scale capital project that included the building of a new high school.  The project, which included a voter approval of $183M referenda, saw him monitor the construction of a competition pool, cross country course, field house, all exterior fields (baseball, soccer, football, and lacrosse) along with facilities for wrestling, gymnastics, weight, and cardio.

“I humbly thank Dr. Ziggy Siegfried and President (Christopher M.) Pietruszkiewicz for the opportunity to become the Executive Deputy Athletics Director for External Relations at the University of Evansville,” Zimba said.  “Ziggy has transformed UE into one of the premier athletic departments in the country and, more importantly, has created a culture built on enthusiasm, hard work, and integrity.”

“I am truly blessed to be joining UE at a time of such positive momentum. I am eagerly looking forward to serving our outstanding student-athletes alongside our incredible coaches and staff and contributing to providing an exceptional student-athlete experience,” Zimba added.  “My family is excited to embrace the UE spirit and become part of this vibrant community. Go Purple Aces!”

Along with the new facilities, Zimba had a hands-on approach in multiple facets within the district.  He encouraged all students to participate in athletics by executing programming for over 25 sports and more than 50 club teams.  He directly supervised, evaluated, and professionally developed more than 120 employees district-wide including coaches, administrators, and support staff.

His work resulted in the creation of four part-time District administrative athletic positions, which enhanced the vision, mission, and initiatives.  Zimba negotiated a district-wide co-curricular compensation increase of 12% to recruit, retain, and develop talented coaches and staff.

Prior to assuming his role at Verona Area School District, Zimba held three positions at Valparaiso University between 2015 and 2019.  While working towards his Master’s, Zimba served as a Men’s Basketball Graduate Assistant from 2015-16 where he completed planning, managerial, and administrative duties for the men’s basketball program.

He was elevated to the Director of Men’s Basketball Operations at Valpo in 2016 and held that position until 2018.  Zimba’s responsibilities in that position included budget administration, facility supervision, equipment inventory control, team travel coordination, development of the practice schedule, and summer camp management.

Zimba’s final year at Valparaiso saw him serve as the Assistant Director of Annual Giving where he played a pivotal role in sourcing and soliciting annual gift commitments up to $10K.  He supported the President Circle and accomplished a goal of 125 new donors while helping senior executives raise over $700K from over 2,000 donors.

In 2016, he earned his Master’s of Science in Sports Administration from Valparaiso while earning a Bachelor of Letters & Science in Afro-American Studies Intergroup Relations from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2011.  Joel and wife Krystin have a four-year-old son – Tayden.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING…

Dr. Treymane Clardy, Verona Area School District – Superintendent

“Joel Zimba has been a cornerstone of our community, exemplifying academic and athletic excellence throughout his tenure as our Athletic Director in the Verona Area School District. His unwavering commitment to sportsmanship, ethics, and service to others has profoundly influenced our student-athletes and the broader community. We are immensely proud of his achievements and wish him continued success in his new role as Executive Deputy Athletic Director for External Relations at the University of Evansville.”

Chad Wiese, Verona Area School District – Deputy Superintendent

“Joel Zimba is a huge loss for our school district. His work ethic, technical abilities, and, most of all, his interpersonal skills will be greatly missed. Joel’s time in the Verona Area School District resulted in historic achievements and participation rates in our athletic programs. I wish him the best as the Executive Deputy Director for External Relations. Joel’s hire at the University of Evansville will make an immediate impact. I’m confident great things lie ahead.”

David Ragland, University of Evansville – Head Men’s Basketball Coach

“I met Joel 8 years ago and had the honor of working with him for two years at Valparaiso University. I had the opportunity to watch how passionate he is about the student-athlete experience. Joel is selfless and a tireless worker. He is honest and will do what is right no matter the situation. Joel embodies all the qualities of the culture Dr Ziggy Siegfried has worked so hard to create for our athletic department here at UE. Dr Ziggy Siegfried has created great momentum within our athletic department, built on positivity, problem-solving, and connectivity through effective communication. I’m excited to watch our athletics department improve with Joel Zimba’s addition and look forward to working alongside him.”

Steve Watson, Loyola Chicago – Director of Athletics

“Evansville is getting one of the best in Joel Zimba. With his background and experience in athletics administration, there’s no doubt he’ll do great things for the Purple Aces. Congratulations to Ziggy and his staff for landing a good one!”

Jackie Manuel, American University – Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach

“Joel Zimba is a great friend and person. Joel is a hard worker and consummate professional who strives to serve others every day. EU is getting a high-character person that is committed to excellence.”

Jamie Sims, Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District – District Director of Athletics and Activities

“I had the great pleasure to meet and begin working with Joel Zimba in 2020 as an athletic director, and since then, I have had the opportunity to partner with and create a meaningful relationship that surpasses the world of education-based athletics. Mr. Zimba’s leadership skills and ability to get the best out of the most as a part of his character, leadership, and overall care and concern for others continue to inspire and motivate me to do precisely that in my current capacity. Joel’s passion for leading others and ensuring equitable outcomes for all has resonated with me and overflowed into the Big 8 conference here in Wisconsin. Today, I am a better leader because I have met and worked alongside Joel Zimba. He has definitely left his life, print, and legacy in Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletics.
