Crystal Sisson Selected As Co-President At National Children’s Alliance Conference

Evansville, Ind.   Holly’s House, a local child and adult victim advocacy center, has announced their “Think First & Stay Safe” Lead Prevention Educator, Crystal Sisson, has been selected to co-present a session on School-Based Prevention Education, along with Jennifer Wooden Mitchell, Co-President of Child Lures Prevention, and a national child safety expert. The National Children’s Alliance 2018 Leadership Conference will be held June 11th through June 13th in Washington, D.C.

The “Think First & Stay Safe!” program is taught by Holly’s House prevention educators in elementary schools in Gibson, Pike, Posey, Vanderburgh, and Warrick Counties in Southwest Indiana. Since the program’s inception in 2010, almost 31,000 elementary students have been reached. This evidence-based program was developed by Child Lures Prevention and teaches children personal safety skills, how to identify unsafe situations, and how to react when they feel someone may be dangerous.  Holly’s House is one of 21 international Child Lures ® Prevention/ Teen Lures Prevention partners whose mission is to help ensure the personal safety of children and youth through increased awareness, education, advocacy, and action.

House Explosion Mastermind Mark Leonard Dies In Prison

Mark Leonard, the man convicted in the massive 2012 Indianapolis house explosion that killed two in the Richmond Hill subdivision, has died at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, a spokesman for the Indiana Department of Correction confirmed Tuesday. He was 48.

Leonard and his brother, Bob, were convicted on a slew of charges after they caused a natural gas explosion at the home of Monserrate Shirley, Leonard’s girlfriend. The explosion killed Shirley’s neighbors, Jennifer and Dion Longworth, and damaged or destroyed dozens of homes in the neighborhood on Indianapolis’ far south side.

Bob and Mark Leonard each were sentenced to life without parole. Shirley was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Earlier this month, the Indiana Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Mark Leonard would not appear before them again after denying transfer to his challenge of one of his numerous felony convictions.

State of Indiana Wins Dismissal Of $30 Million Lawsuit Brought By David Camm

Attorney General Curtis Hill today lauded a U.S. District Court decision to dismiss with prejudice a civil rights lawsuit brought against members of the Indiana State Police, prosecutors and other officials by a former trooper tried three times for the murder of his wife and two children. David Camm had claimed in his lawsuit that he was the victim of unlawful investigation, arrest and imprisonment – and that his prosecution was a malicious action.

Camm was seeking $30 million in damages for his alleged claims, in addition to fees and costs.

“Police investigators and prosecutors properly charged this individual with murder,” Attorney General Hill said. “I hope the dismissal of this lawsuit helps assure our brave officers that both state and federal laws protect them whenever they are discharging their duties in good faith.”

David Camm’s wife and two children were discovered slain on Sept. 28, 2000, in the garage of their home in Georgetown, Indiana.

Attached is the U.S. District Court’s entry granting the State’s motions for summary judgment and dismissing the case with prejudice. The state will be seeking to recoup its costs for taxpayers.

Indiana Healthy Indiana Plan Extended For One Month

Governor Eric Holcomb said today Indiana has received an extension to continue operation of the state’s Healthy Indiana Plan through Feb. 28. The current HIP program was set to expire Jan. 31.

“We had hoped to receive approval of our expanded HIP program by Wednesday. We’re close but we are still working through the final details of our new plan with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS),” said Governor Eric Holcomb. “This extension allows us to continue HIP until the waiver application is approved. Our more than 400,000 HIP participants will see no change in service.”

Indiana submitted a HIP waiver application in January 2017 and filed an amendment in the summer.  When the waiver is approved, Indiana will expand treatment options to Hoosiers impacted by the drug epidemic, enhance opportunities to connect eligible HIP participants to meaningful employment and community engagement, and ease administrative burdens for HIP members.

In the event there was an extended federal government shutdown, CMS notified the state on January 22 that the current HIP program would continue through February.

HIP was created in 2007 by Gov. Mitch Daniels and has since become a model for the nation. The program focuses on improving health outcomes and reducing the costs of healthcare delivery for all who participate. Gov. Mike Pence expanded the program in 2015 as Indiana’s alternative to traditional Medicaid expansion.

Men’s basketball home Wednesday to face UNI

Two of the top defensive teams in the Missouri Valley Conference meet on the hardwood for the first time this season when the University of Evansville men’s basketball team welcomes UNI to the Ford Center for a 7 p.m. tilt on Wednesday at the Ford Center.

Evansville looks for its first 3-game conference win streak of the season as the Purple Aces are coming off of a 77-73 win over Drake on Saturday.  Ryan Taylor led the way with 25 points and a career-best 8 rebounds while Noah Frederking had his best league effort, tallying 16.  On a day where his father’s jersey was retired, Blake Simmons notched 14 points.

For the 11th time this season, Ryan Taylor reached the 20-point mark as he totaled 25 on a 10-of-18 shooting day against Drake.  He drained 10 shots for the third time this season and continued his streak of reaching double figures in each of his 16 games this season; he has scored 10+ in 18 consecutive games overall.  By hauling in eight rebounds versus the Bulldogs, Taylor set his career mark in that statistic.

Getting valuable playing time is priceless in the MVC and Noah Frederking is getting just that in his first collegiate season.  Frederking has averaged 5.6 points per game this season and is shooting a smooth 89.3% from the free throw line (25/28).  He had his best league game in the win over Drake, tallying 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting and a 6-6 day from the line.

Over the last three games, the Purple Aces have gone 61-of-68 from the free throw line – a scorching 89.7%.  A 10/12 game at Bradley started the streak before UE went 29-of-31 at Valparaiso and 22 out of 25 in the home win over Drake.  The team now ranks 8th in the country, hitting 78.3% of its attempts; it is on pace to be the best mark in program history; the previous team high was 77.2% in 1998-99.

UNI fell in its first five MVC games, but has gone 3-2 since then to stand at 11-11 overall and 3-7 in Valley play.  Two Panthers averaged double figures with Bennett Koch recording 12.2 points per game and Tywhon Pickford checking in with 10.7 PPG.  Pickford has upped his output to 13.5 PPG in conference games and scored 14 points last time out against Loyola as the Ramblers earned a 70-47 win.  Klint Carlson also had 14 points in Sunday’s game in Chicago.

USI has two at the PAC for Homecoming Week

University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball hosts a pair of games at the Physical Activities Center during Homecoming Week, beginning with Maryville University Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The USI Homecoming game is scheduled for Saturday at 3:15 p.m. when the Screaming Eagles host Quincy University.

Game coverage for all of USI’s game action, including live stats, video stream, and audio broadcasts, is available at GoUSIEagles.com. The games also can be heard on ESPN 97.7 WREF and 95.7FM The Spin.

Following this week’s two-game homestand, USI has only one home date left on the schedule when it hosts Bellarmine University for Senior Day February 10 at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles are slated to play five of their last six on the road to end the 2017-18 regular season.

USI Men’s Basketball Week 12 Notes: 

USI continues to receive votes for national poll. For the second-straight week, USI received votes for the D2SIDA Media Poll this week, falling two votes shy of entering the top 25 for the first time this season. The Screaming Eagles also received votes two-straight weeks in December, but has not appeared in the D2SIDA Media Poll or the NABC Top 25 Poll this year.

Eagles goes 2-0 last week. USI started last week by completing a homestand sweep with a 74-55 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Junior guard Alex Stein led the Eagles with 20 points, while senior forward Julius Rajala and senior guard Marcellous Washington rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Freshman forward Emmanuel Little led USI on the glass with 10 rebounds, his seventh double-digit rebounding game this season.

The Eagles completed last week’s action with an 86-56 victory at McKendree University. Senior forward DayJar Dickson led three players in double-digits with a career-high 22 points. Washington was second in Saturday’s victory with 17 points and a team-high, season-best seven rebounds.

Watson wins number 200. USI Head Coach Rodney Watson becomes the third Eagles’ head coach to reach the 200-win mark with the victory, tying for second all-time in program history. He is tied with Rick Herdes (200-59, 2001-09) and 31 wins behind all-time leader Bruce Pearl (231-46, 1992-2001).

Eagles on four-game winning streak. USI is on a four-game winning streak, tying for the second longest stretch of the season. Junior guard Alex Stein leads five players averaging in double-digits with 15.0 points per game. Senior guard Marcellous Washington is second with 13.5 points per outing, while freshman forward Emmanuel Little is posting a double-double with 12.3 points and 11.0 rebounds per contest. Junior guard/forward Nate Hansen and senior forward DayJar Dickson round out the double-figure scorers with 11.5 and 10.5 points per the last four games.

USI Leaders. USI has three players averaging double-digits in 2017-18. Junior guard Alex Stein leads the scorers with 18.4 points per game, while junior guard/forward Nate Hansen and senior guard Marcellous Washington round out the double-digit scorers with 14.4 and 12.2 points per contest, respectively. Freshman forward Emmanuel Little has the team lead on the glass with 7.5 rebounds per outing, 8.6 per contest in GLVC action. Senior forward DayJar Dickson is second with 7.1 rebounds per contest, 7.6 per league game.

Washington and Stein among GLVC, NCAA leaders. Junior guard Alex Stein is first in the league and second nationally in free throw percentage (95.4; 103-108) and 27th nationally in free throws made (103).Senior guard Marcellous Washington leads the GLVC and ranks 19th nationally for assist-turnover ratio (2.89).  USI, as a team, is first in the GLVC and fourth nationally in rebounds, and second in the league and 12th nationally in rebound margin.
