Women’s Track & Field records top 10 finishes at UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Indoor Track & Field competed in the UIndy Collegiate Challenge Saturday afternoon, recording multiple top 10 finishes.

USI had four top 10 finishes in the 3000 meters, with senior Kate Duty (Owensboro, Kentucky) in third with a time of 10 minutes, 53.97 seconds. Junior Emily Roberts (Fredericktown, Ohio) was sixth, and sophomores Ashley Lawhorn (Frankfort, Kentucky) and Ellie Tjelmeland (Springfield, Illinois) ninth and 10th, respectively.

The Screaming Eagles were also well represented in the mile, as junior Micalah Booher (Pendleton, Indiana) took third in 5:28.28. Senior Allyson Watson (East Peoria, Illinois) placed fourth in the event.

Three top 10 results also occurred in the 1000 meters, as junior Kate Henrickson (Boonville, Indiana) came in fourth in 3:07.39. Junior Allison Rollins (Newburgh, Indiana) brought home sixth and junior Sarah Hamilton was 10th.

Freshman Amanda Moore (Farmersburg, Indiana) had a top-five finish in her first collegiate event, taking fifth in the 600 meters in 1:49.27.

USI also got third and fourth place finishes from their 4×800 relay teams.

The Eagles return to Indianapolis next Friday and Saturday for the UIndy Tom Hathaway Distance Classic.

Lawrence wins 3000 meters to pace Eagles at UIndy

University of Southern Indiana Men’s Track & Field sophomore distance runner Darin Lawrence(Indianapolis, Indiana) won the 3000 meters Saturday afternoon at the UIndy Collegiate Invitational.

Lawrence paced the field and seven other Screaming Eagles en route to his first place finish in a time of 9 minutes, 2.99 seconds.

Also on the track, the Eagles had five more top eight finishes. Freshman Arie Macias (Godfrey, Illinois) placed seventh in the 800 meters in 2:04.08, junior Austin Jones (Botkins, Ohio) third in the 1000 meters in 2:41.83, and sophomore Darius Payne (Louisville, Kentucky), freshman Madison King (Avon, Indiana) and junior Tyler Kruse (Fort Branch, Indiana) finished fourth, sixth, and eighth, respectively, in the 600 meters.

Freshman Tyrell Nickelson (English, Indiana) led the Eagles in the field events, taking third in the high jump and seventh in the triple jump. He jumped a height of six feet, 4.75 inches to clear the bar and a distance of 39’2 5″.

The Eagles return to Indianapolis next Friday and Saturday for the UIndy Tom Hathaway Distance Classic.

No. 3/7 Indiana Hosts Purdue On Senior Day

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 3/7 Indiana University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host the Purdue Boilermakers on Senior Day today at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind.

The dual meet will get underway on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. ET, with the Senior Day ceremony beginning at 10:40 a.m. ET on the pool deck. The meet will be streamed live on BTN Plus, while live swimming results can be found at IUHoosiers.com. Diving results can be found at DiveMeets.com.

The dual meet will feature 34 events on Saturday – 28 swimming events as well as men’s and women’s platform, 3-meter and 1-meter diving.

Parking Information:  Free parking will be available at the IU SRSC lot and the Sunrise lot on 10th Street.

Scouting the Hoosiers

The No. 3-ranked Indiana men’s team enters the meet with a record of 7-0 this season, having won the team’s past 20-straight dual meets. The men’s squad is 5-0 against ranked teams this year, earning wins over No. 2 Texas, No. 4 Florida, No. 8 Florida, No. 13 Notre Dame and No. 15 Tennessee. IU moved up one spot in the CSCAA/TYR rankings this week.

The No. 7-ranked Hoosier women’s team is 3-4 in dual meets this season. IU has posted victories over No. 15 Kentucky and No. 18 Florida this season. Indiana improved three spots in the latest CSCAA/TYR Top 25 poll released this week.

Scouting the Boilermakers

The Purdue men’s team enters Saturday’s meet with a dual-meet record of 4-2 on the season, including a 1-1 mark against ranked teams. The Boilermakers beat No. 16 South Carolina, but lost to No. 14 Notre Dame.

The Purdue women’s squad enters the meet with the Hoosiers with a record of 4-1 and are receiving votes on the CSCAA/TYR Top 25 Poll. The Boilermakers are 0-1 against ranked opponents this year, dropping a meet to No. 10 Notre Dame.

Hoosier Men Take Down No. 8 Michigan

The No. 4 Hoosier men (7-0) recorded the team’s 20th-straight dual meet victory, taking down No. 8 Michigan, 170.5-129.5. The win for the IU men’s team at Michigan is the first since the 1980-81 season.

Four Hoosiers Earn Weekly Big Ten Honors

Blake Pieroni was named Big Ten Men’s Swimmer of the Week for the fifth time this season on Jan. 17, while Jessica Parratto was named Big Ten Women’s Diver of the Week for the third time. James Connor was named Men’s Diver of the Week for the first time, while Gabriel Fantoni was named Freshman of the Week after his first meet for the Hoosiers.

Hixon, Connor Win Diving Titles

Michael Hixon and James Connor each won diving titles the week of Dec. 18. At the 2017 USA Diving Winter National Championships in Greensboro, N.C., Hixon won gold in the 3-meter dive with an impressive score of 1231.85. At the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Trials in Australia, Connor took home the gold in the 3-meter, winning with a score of 868.70.

IU Posts Impressive Times at Purdue Invitational

The IU women’s team won the Purdue Invite, topping the eight-team field with a total of 896.5 points, while the Hoosier men finished second with 847 points as No. 3 Florida won with a score of 1,009 points.

Over the course of the three-day meet, Indiana won an impressive 22 events. The Hoosiers also won eight of the 10 relays over the course of the three-day meet. IU also totaled six NCAA A cuts on the week as well.

King Wins Two USA Swimming Golden Goggle Awards

Lilly King took home two awards at the 2017 USA Swimming Golden Goggle Awards at the J.W. Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE in November, winning Female Race of the Year honors, as well as Relay Performance of the Year. The Evansville, Ind. native now has three Golden Goggle Awards to her name, as she won Breakout Performer of the Year in 2016.

Along with King, IU’s Blake Pieroni and Ray Looze were also nominated for Golden Goggle Awards. Blake Pieroni was nominated as part of the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay at the 2017 FINA World Championships, while Looze was nominated for Coach of the Year.

Indiana Earns Three Victories over No. 13/18 Notre Dame and Cincinnati

The No. 1-ranked IU men’s team extended their dual-meet win streak to 19-straight, beating No. 13 Notre Dame, 146-95, and Cincinnati, 146-95. The No. 9-ranked Hoosier women’s team (3-3) took down Cincinnati, 190-53, but were edged by No. 18 Notre Dame, 123-120.

Five Hoosiers won two individual events on the day, with Blake Pieroni, Lilly King, Ali Rockett, Jessica Parratto and Michael Hixon pacing the Indiana effort. On the day, IU won 15 individual events and three of the four relays.

Looze Named SwimSwam Coach of the Month for October

Indiana head swimming coach Ray Looze was named SwimSwam’s Coach of the Month for October after leading IU to three wins over Texas and Florida. Swimming defending NCAA champions Texas and last year’s third-place team Florida on the men’s side, the IU men pulled off a big early-season win.

And on the women’s side, Indiana came within 26 points of Texas, a top-5 program a year ago, while beating up on Florida. IU swept all eight relays at the tri-meet and won 25 of 42 swimming events between men and women.

 

Hoosiers Earn Three Wins Over Tennessee and Kentucky

The No. 1-ranked Hoosier men extended the team’s dual-meet win-streak to 17-straight, beating No. 15 Tennessee, 165-135, and Kentucky, 223-84. The No. 7-ranked Indiana women took down No. 15 Kentucky, 157-143, but were edged by No. 12 Tennessee, 159-141. The Hoosier women move to 2-2 on the dual meet season.

Overall, the men’s and women’s squads combined to win 14 events on the afternoon. The Hoosiers continued to swim fast early in the season, posting seven times in the top-10 across the country, including two best times in the nation.

Hoosiers Post Three Victories Over No. 2/3 Texas and No. 4/18 Florida

The No. 6 Indiana men defeated No. 2 Texas, 264-165, and took down No. 4 Florida, 242-187. With the two victories, the Hoosiers extended their dual-meet win streak to 15-straight. The No. 10 Indiana women beat No. 18 Florida, 251-178, but fell to No. 3 Texas, 226.5-200.5. For the meet, IU totaled 19 individual wins and an impressive seven relay victories.

IU Places Six Swimmers, Three Coaches on USA Swimming National Team

Six Indiana University swimmers along with three Hoosier coaches were named to the 2017-18 USA Swimming National Team in September. Current IU swimmers Ian Finnerty, Lilly King and Blake Pieroni were named to the team, along with alum Cody Miller and IU postgrads Zane Grothe and Amanda Kendall. IU head coach Ray Looze, associate head coach Mike Westphal and associate head sprint coach Coley Stickels were named Team USA coaches.

Looze Named ASCA Coach of the Year

Indiana University head coach Ray Looze was named George Haines Coach of the Year Thursday evening by the American Swim Coaches Association. Looze coached four swimmers onto the U.S. World Championships team this summer, including world record-setter Lilly King.

Looze was a women’s assistant coach on the USA staff in Budapest, and he led the Hoosier men to a seventh-place finish this summer at the NCAA championships, and his women took eighth.

King won four gold medals at the World Championships this year and set (or helped set) world records in all four events: the 50 breast, 100 breasts and both the women’s and mixed 400 medley relays. Looze also puts Cody Miller, Blake Pieroni and Zane Grothe onto the World Championships roster, and all won at least one relay medal in Budapest.

Hoosiers at the FINA World Championships

Indiana Swimming & Diving had quite the showing at the FINA World Championships this summer. Over the course of the week at the World Championships, Hoosiers swimmers – current, alumni and postgrad – combined to win seven gold and two bronze medals. The IU swimmers also combined to set four world records.

Indiana Men Win 2016 Big Ten Championship

The Hoosiers won the program’s 25th Big Ten Championship in 2016 – the first title for IU since 2006. IU won the team title with a total score of 1,504 points. For the week, IU won a total of 19 medals – 12 gold, five silver, and two bronze. Indiana also won four of the five relays at the Big Ten Championships, marking the first time in program history the team accomplished that impressive feat. The dozen league crowns are the most for the team since winning 13 in 1976.

Arrest Warrant Leads to Additional Drug Arrests

Vanderburgh County – Friday evening, January 19, Indiana State Police responded to 1101 North Spring Street in Evansville to serve arrest warrants on Kelli Vollmer, 39.  She had active warrants out of Gibson and Vanderburgh Counties.  While arresting Vollmer, troopers observed additional criminal activity inside the residence. Troopers obtained a search warrant and later discovered methamphetamine, a lookalike substance and drug paraphernalia. The homeowners, Randall and Joanne Ubelhor, were arrested for various drug offenses. All three individuals were taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail where they are currently being held on bond. This is an ongoing investigation.

Man arrsted on weapon and intimidation charges during shots fired investigation

Evansville Police arrested 20 year old MATTHEW WILKE on gun and intimidation charges during a shots fired call on Saturday night.
Motor Patrol officers were called to the 2100 block of Sweetser Ave just before 9:00pm. A 911 caller gave a description of the perosn who fired the gun.
Officers arived and detained 3 people. During the investigation, WILKE admitted that he fired a handgun several times. A woman who was with him had been in possession of the gun. The woman has a permit and was legally carrying the gun. WILKE gave the gun back to the woman before police arrived. The woman was still in possession of the gun when officers arrived. The gun was seized as evidence.
During his arrest, WILKE threatened one of the arresting officers. WILKE was arrested for Carrying a Handgun Without a Permit and Intimidation.

All suspects are inncocent until proven guilty.

Fort Branch Couple Arrested for Dealing Meth

Gibson County – Friday night at approximately 7:30, troopers responded to a residence located at 8103 Angelia Drive in Fort Branch to serve an arrest warrant on Christopher J. Worland, 39.  An arrest warrant had been issued for Worland’s arrest for Invasion of Privacy, a Class 6 Felony. When troopers arrived two males and one female exited the residence. They were identified as Christopher Worland, 39, Billie Jo Cain, 38, and Kevin M. Trent, 27.  Troopers discovered that Cain had an active arrest warrant out of Posey County for driving while intoxicated. Trent was wanted out of Vanderburgh County for failure to appear for a misdemeanor offense. Trent was visiting Worland and Cain.

During a search of the residence troopers found multiple small baggies containing meth, two syringes loaded with meth, small amount of marijuana and multiple drug paraphernalia items. Worland and Cain were arrested and taken to the Gibson County Jail where they are currently being held on bond.  Trent was arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail for his warrant.

Simmons scores 1,000th point in loss to Bradley

UE looks to right the ship on Wednesday at Valparaiso

University of Evansville senior Blake Simmons became the 49th player in program history to reach the 1000-point mark as the Purple Aces were defeated by Bradley, 66-53, on Saturday evening inside Carver Arena.

Simmons led UE (12-9, 2-6 MVC) with 12 points, all from long range.  Ryan Taylor, who was held scoreless in the first half, finished with 10 in the second frame.  Dru Smith scored nine.

“We did not get off to the start that we wanted, but our guys fought back and I give them credit,” Aces head coach Marty Simmons said.  “We cut it close near the end of the first half, but Bradley had a good run to finish the half and also got off to a good start in the second half.  Our guys fought back, but I do not think our decision-making was good down the stretch.  It was tough, hard-fought game on both sides.”

Four Braves (14-7, 4-4 MVC) scored double figures, led by a 17-point game from Darrell Brown.  Donte Thomas notched 13 points and 12 boards.

Bradley got the early jump on the Aces, scoring the first five points of the game.  K.J. Riley got UE on the board with a pair of free throws before the Braves punched right back.  An and-one by Elijah Childs spearheaded a 9-0 run as the Braves capped it off with a pair of triples to open up a 14-2 advantage.  Evansville missed its first four shots while Bradley opened the game at 4-for-7.

After a timeout, Blake Simmons found Dainius Chatkevicius for a layup for the Aces’ first field goal of the night.  Simmons then knocked down a three a minute later to make to get UE within seven at 14-7.  A 7-0 run was finished off with a Dru Smith bucket as the Aces got within five.  The UE defense held Bradley to 1 of its next 8 from the field following their hot start.

A pair of BU shots saw them retake a 9-point lead at 20-11 midway through the half before Noah Frederking found Chatkevicius cutting to the basket for an and-one.  Simmons hit a triple on the next trip down the floor to make it a 20-17 game and with just over five minutes remaining in the period, John Hall connected on a basket to cut the Bradley lead to just one.

The 1000th point of Simmons career was a big one as it countered the Braves 3-point possession making it a 26-25 game heading into the final four minutes of the half.  From there, the Braves were able to finish the period on a 10-0 run as Donte Thomas hit a three with just five ticks remaining to send the Brave into halftime up 36-25.

Simmons milestone was the second major one to happen for UE in the last three season at Carver Arena.  On February 23, 2016, Egidijus Mockevicius grabbed the 1,198th rebound of his career to break the program record, which was set by Dale Wise in 1961.

Out of the break, the Braves reeled off six in a row to open up a 42-25 lead in the first three minutes of the period.  Smith got the team on the board with a layup at the 16:48 mark before Ryan Taylor got into the scoring column.  The junior missed his first eight shots of the night, but he never gave up, knocking down three field goals in a row as part of a 14-2 run.  Smith completed the rally with a trey to make it a 44-39 game with 12:21 on the clock.

In the following four minutes, the Braves regained the momentum, going on a 10-2 run to see their lead grow back to 13 at 54-41.  Over that span, the Aces hit one of their four attempts while turning it over five times.  Simmons was true from downtown once again with seven minutes left to get the Aces back within 11.

UE continued to chip away.  With under five minutes remaining, a great shot by Taylor got the lead under ten before a pair of free throws by Smith got UE within six (56-50) as three minutes were on the clock.  UE was unable to get any closer as the Braves offense finished the game on a 10-3 run to earn a 66-53 victory.

BU finished the game shooting 42.6% while the Aces finished at 31.6%.  The rebounding statistic also went Bradley’s way by a 41-34 final.

Wednesday evening will see the Aces make their first trip to Valparaiso since the school joined the Missouri Valley Conference last year.

 

Aces compete at Ft. Wayne Duals

Competing in its first meet since 1985, the University of Evansville men’s and women’s track and field teams took to the track inside the Athletics Center Fieldhouse on the campus of Fort Wayne.

In the dual-scored meet, the Aces’ men defeated IUPUI (57.00-29.00) and Morehead State (62.00-16.00), while the women’s team fell in all nine of its matchups.

For the men’s side, Evansville’s highest finish of the day came in the pole vault as freshman Ian Alberts finished fourth among the 10-vaulter field with a height of 4.10 meters. Fellow freshman Kevin Yeung joined Alberts in the pole vault competition, finishing in a tie for eighth with a height of 3.20 meters.

Racing at a distance much shorter than he has been accustomed to in a pair of season’s with the Aces’ cross country team, sophomore Stanley Chepchieng excelled in the 800 meters earning an 11th-place finish with a time of 2:03.67. Also in the 800, sophomore Tucker Dawson finished in 2:12.82 in 17th, while freshman Alton Hoops (2:24.12) and sophomore Jonathan Newby (2:34.29) crossed the finish line in 19th and 20th, respectively.

Evansville also saw success in the mile run as freshman Ethan Price (23rd) finished just over 13 seconds shy of a top 10 finish with a time of 4:36.29 in the tightly bunched field.

For the Aces’ women’s team, much like her counterpart on the men’s team, freshman Anna Lowry found success in the 800 meters, finishing 15th with a time of 2:32.03. Lowry finished the race less than five seconds off the fifth-place finisher. Also for the Aces in the 800, freshman Izzy Dawson crossed the line in 21st just seven seconds behind Lowry while freshman Lexi Sutherland finished 24th in 2:46.03.

Freshman Nikki Hutchcraft represented the Aces in the 60-meter dash, finishing 19th among the 30-sprinter field in a time of 8.30.

In the final women’s event of the afternoon, the Aces put together a successful run in the 4×400 meter relay. Evansville finished ninth among the 13 teams competing in the relay, finishing in a time of 4:27.82 ahead of A-teams from Morehead State and Valparaiso and Northern Kentucky’s B-team.

Both men’s and women’s squads return to indoor competition on February 3 at the Don Denoon Invitational in Carbondale, Illinois.
