Gov. Holcomb, ISBVI Board names next Superintendent of the
Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired
INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Eric J. Holcomb and the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI) today announced James R. Michaels will serve as the next superintendent. The school’s current superintendent, James Durst, announced his retirement earlier this year. Michaels will enter the role with over 35 years of serving Hoosier youth and adults with disabilities.
“James Michaels has spent his life in service to Hoosiers with disabilities,” said Gov. Holcomb. “I know James will bring that dedication along with his decades of experience providing and leading human services to the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.”
Michaels is an alumnus, former employee and former board member of ISBVI. Since 1998, Michaels has served in education, counseling and leadership positions, including VP of Programs, at Bosma Enterprises, an Indianapolis nonprofit providing employment, rehabilitation and job training for people who are blind or visually impaired. Earlier in his career, Michaels held multiple student-serving roles at the Indiana School for the Deaf.
“I am so grateful to have the opportunity to return to the school that made such a difference in my life. As a former student and employee of the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, I have witnessed first-hand the life changing impact the school has on the students, parents, staff, and the community at-large,” said Michaels. “I am excited to have the opportunity to work side by side with the amazing ISBVI staff to continue to support, encourage, and educate the student-body. The message the students will hear from me over and over again is, ‘I believe in you.’”
Michaels completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Indiana University. He resides in Brownsburg with his wife, Connie; they have a son, Jesse, currently attending college.
As one of the largest state schools in the nation serving students who are blind or have low vision, IBSVI enrolls 110 students spanning preschool through high school, approximately 40 of whom are residential, as well as directly serving over 300 students across 46 school districts. Established in 1847, the school also offers a wide array of other programming aligned to its statutory mission of serving Hoosier students with visual disabilities.

Covering 50 miles and shaped by the input of thousands of regional residents, these plans embody a collective vision for vibrant, inclusive, and thriving riverfronts designed to attract residents, businesses, and visitors to the Evansville region.
“Regional residents have expressed their desire for a stronger connection to the river for almost a century—since Evansville’s first master plan in 1928,” said Lloyd Winnecke, CEO of E-REP. “Today, we celebrate the beginning of a transformative journey toward more vibrant and connected riverfronts across our region.”

The plan underscores the importance of regional collaboration for the enhancement of the Evansville Region’s riverfronts. It outlines a prioritization schedule for implementing projects, programs, policies, and partnerships crucial to bringing the plan to life.
Additionally, the plan encompasses community outreach findings and resident feedback, financial modeling, proposed funding sources, a parking supply and demand study, guidance on traffic and transportation needs, and hydrological information for effective flood management along the Ohio River.
“Working on the Ohio River Vision and Strategic Plans has been a privilege. Our team has diligently merged innovative design concepts with sustainable practices, crafting a blueprint for a riverfront that honors Evansville’s heritage while embracing its future,” said Anna Cawrse, Principal Landscape Architect at Sasaki.
The plan was funded by the State of Indiana’s READI grant program, which focuses on increasing activation and investment in Indiana’s communities, economy, and exceptional quality of place resources, such as the Ohio River. More information about READI can be found at indianareadi.com.

July 17, 2024
(Evansville, Ind) – Starting today, Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) customers who qualify for bill assistance now have two options to save on their water bill: Chose to receive up to $1,000 in plumbing repairs or updates made by a certified professional through the Leak Repair Program or a $30 monthly credit on their EWSU bill through the Bill Relief Program. The Leak Repair Program option is designed to reduce water usage and save more money over time.
Customers may sign up for the new Leak Repair Program and receive up to $1,000 in small repairs to their home water system, including a water-efficient toilet or plumbing fixtures. Or, they can choose the Bill Relief Credit, which will triple, from $10 a month to $30 a month. That means City residential water customers with active water service and are income-eligible to receive the credit will save up to $360 a year on their water bill.
Customers already receiving the Bill Relief credit have until the end of August to switch to the Leak Repair Program. To learn more, visit ewsu.com/CustomerSupport.
Who’s Eligible
To participate in the Leak Repair Program, EWSU City residential customers must have active water service and a household income that qualifies as low-income based on HUD federal guidelines. To be eligible for the Bill Relief Program, City residential customers with active water service must have a combined annual household income of $50,000 or less.
How The Program Works
To apply for the Leak Repair Program, visit ewsu.com/leakrepair to fill out and submit an application form. EWSU will email you to confirm the application was received and will forward the application to Memorial Community Development Corporation (MCDC) to review your financial status and coordinate a home visit assessment with a plumbing contractor through MCDC’s emergency repair program. If needed repairs exceed the money allotted, MCDC will refer customers to other agency repair programs in the community. Customers must meet the requirements of each agency.
To apply for the Bill Relief Program, visit ewsu.com/billrelief to fill out and submit an application form. EWSU will email you to let you know the application was received and whether your request was approved or denied.
Funding for The Program
In 2022, the City of Evansville allotted $4 million in federal funds from the American Rescue Plan, received during the Covid-19 pandemic to provide direct relief to income-qualified EWSU customers to lighten the cost of their utility bills. The Leak Repair and Bill Relief programs leverage this funding and will be offered through the end of 2026 or until funding is depleted.
FOOTNOTE: Approximately 3,000 applications have been received since the Bill Relief Program launched in 2022; however, EWSU estimates more than 20,000 households could qualify for aid. To learn more, visit ewsu.com/CustomerSupport.

Beasley added to USI Baseball Staff
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball Head Coach Chris Ramirez announced the addition of Derek Beasley to his staff as an assistant coach. Beasley will be responsible for coaching the pitchers.
“Derek is one of the top up and coming pitching coaches in college baseball,” said Ramirez. “He has a proven track record for building successful pitching staffs along with developing players and moving them onto professional baseball.
“Beaz and I have a great coaching chemistry that was successful years during our best years at Lenoir-Rhyne,” continued Ramirez. “Derek is a player’s coach that has the ability to get the most out of his pitchers.”
The native of Harlem, Georgia, joins the USI staff and rejoins Ramirez’s staff after helping Western Carolina University to a record of 49-59 the last two seasons.
Prior to joining the staff at WCU, Beasley was a member of Ramirez’s staff and helped guide Lenoir-Rhyne to a 46-13 record in 2022, collecting eight wins over Top 25 opponents and finishing one victory shy of the NCAA Division II Super Regional appearance. Lenoir-Rhyne’s pitching staff led the nation with an NCAA Division II single-season record of 647 strikeouts in 2022, ranking second in the country in strikeouts per nine innings (11.39).
The Bears also led the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) in team ERA (3.77), finishing 11th nationally, and recorded eight shutouts to rank fifth in the NCAA with a WHIP of 1.31, ninth-best in nationally.
Beasley successfully guided the USC Aiken pitching staff to the top of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC). The Pacers finished second in the league in each of Beasley’s two seasons.
USC Aiken led the PBC in strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings while allowing the fewest hits and the lowest batting average against under Beasley in 2019. In 2018, the Pacers was a PBC-best in saves, earned runs, hits, and batting average against.
Before entering the coaching ranks, Beasley ranks as one of the most efficient pitchers in USC Aiken baseball history. He was a two-time, first-team All-Conference selection and finished his collegiate playing career second in program history with 29 victories over 310.1 career innings from 2011-14. Beasley also posted 292 career strikeouts over the 310.1 innings.
As a senior in 2014, Beasley ranked third in NCAA Division II in games started (15) and his 52 career starts are still the program record, garnering team MVP accolades. He ranks eighth in the history of the PBC in strikeouts and wins and is fifth in career games started. In 2013, Beasley won the Mr. Pacer award for the baseball team and was named All-Region.
Beasley, who is a 2016 graduate of USC Aiken with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a 2021 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne with a masters in university leadership, was drafted by Oakland in the 30th round with the 912th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. He played three seasons of professional baseball (2014-16), securing eight victories over 40 appearances and had a 4.81 career ERA, striking out 78 and waking 31.
