UE Ethics Lecture to Discuss Islam and Challenge of E Pluribus Unum

0

The University of Evansville’s ninth annual William R. Connolly Ethics Lecture is Monday, March 19. The event, which is free and open to the public, will start at 7:00 p.m. in Smythe Lecture Hall (Room 170), Schroeder School of Business Building. William Rory Dickson, assistant professor of Islamic religion and culture at the University of Winnipeg, is the guest lecturer. His topic will be “Islam and the Challenge of E Pluribus Unum.”

The Latin phrase E Pluribus Unum, or “Out of many, One,” was the de facto American motto from 1782 until 1956. Rooted in ancient Greek philosophy, the motto is based upon the Pythagorean ideal of friendship, wherein the love of the other unifies the friends as one. The motto’s profound social meaning is the possibility of a genuine unity forged across the borders of identity. Many observers argue that drawing together peoples of diverse religious, cultural, racial, economic, and ideological identities into a common solidarity remains the great challenge of America. This talk is premised on the question: what might Islam have to contribute to this perpetual and timely challenge? How might Islam’s rich intellectual tradition provide us with conceptual tools to navigate the contemporary social issue of making one out of many?

Dickson completed a joint-PhD in religious studies at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo, with a specialization in Islamic Studies. As a SSHRC Doctoral Fellow, he attended the University of Toronto and the University of Copenhagen’s Graduate Research School in Damascus, Syria. His research focuses on contemporary Islam in general, and Islamic mysticism (Sufism) in particular. His first book, Living Sufism in North America: Between Tradition and Transformation, explores the ways in which Sufi leaders in North America negotiate Sufisms to Islam, authority, and gender. Dickson is currently preparing a manuscript with Meena Sharify-Funk for an innovative introductory text on Sufism, while continuing a number of research projects on contemporary Islam. He has traveled throughout the Middle East, including Syria, Egypt, and Morocco.

This lecture series is sponsored by UE’s ethics program, Department of Philosophy and Religion.

The Eagles defeated Lewis, 67-56, in the GLVC-opener in December.

USI enters this weekend’s regional as the No. 3 seed, while the Flyers (23-7) are the No. 6 seed.

Evansville extends Hillson, Montano; signs Thoele

The Evansville Otters have signed infielders Taylor Hillson and Lance Montano to contract extensions.

Hillson, a Mansfield Pa. native, joined the Otters last season after playing for Mansfield University.

As a senior in 2016, he started all 46 games at shortstop and led the team with a .372 batting average while scoring 33 runs. He finished that season with 13 doubles and 24 RBIs. Noted for his defense, Hillson had a .921 fielding percentage in his career at Mansfield.

With Evansville in 2017, Hillson appeared in 17 games and collected eight hits and two doubles. He also drew six walks.

“Taylor showed a lot of promise last year and I believe he learned a lot about the commitment required to play professionally,” Otters manager Andy McCauley said. “We’re looking forward to seeing him this spring competing for one of the infield positions.”

Montano came to Evansville last season after playing for the University of Rio Grande (Ohio).

In 2016, Montano hit .332 and finished with 52 RBIs, 11 doubles, one triple and five home runs. Montano played in the California Winter League in 2017, where he hit .306 in 17 games.

Montano appeared in 41 games last season for the Otters and finished with a .242 batting average. He collected 18 runs and finished with eight RBIs.

“Lance will be the only returning first baseman and hopefully he is ready to compete for an everyday job there,” McCauley said. “We saw glimpses of the power and defense needed, we just need to see it on a more consistent basis.”

The Otters made an additional move, signing right-handed pitcher Sam Thoele. An Effingham, Ill. native, Thoele played collegiately at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Thoele was drafted in the 14th round of the 2015 MLB Amateur Draft by the Colorado Rockies. He pitched in the Rockies’ organization from 2015-17, splitting time between Grand Junction, Asheville, Lancaster and Boise. In 80 games, he had a 4.52 ERA and finished with 17 saves in 81.2 innings.

“He had interesting numbers with the Rockies’ organization and it made us want to see him in spring training,” McCauley said. “Sam is going to be competing for a late bullpen role, possibly as our closer.”

Evansville will celebrate Bosse Field’s Opening Night May 11 against the Washington Wild Things at 6:35 p.m.

Dr. Adam Summers, professor of biology at the University of Washington, will present the University of Southern Indiana’s seventh annual Marlene V. Shaw Biology Lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 21 in Mitchell Auditorium located in the Health Professions Building on the USI campus. The presentation, titled “From Finding Nemo to Finding Patents,” is free and open to the public.

Dr. Summers runs the comparative biomechanics and biomaterials lab at Friday Harbor Lab. He visualizes 3D fish anatomy with CT scans and holds a goal to CT scan all 33,000 fish species in the world. He is a keynote speaker at zoological events and conferences in the United States and Europe, and was a science advisor for Pixar Animation Studios for the movies Finding Nemo and Finding Dory. He is also an exhibitor of large format prints of fish CT scans in U.S. and Asian art galleries and museums. His work has led to more than 100 publications, two patents, and more than $1.8 million in grants for which he was principal investigator.

Summers received his doctoral degree in biology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he worked on new tissues from cartilaginous fishes. He previously served as assistant and associate professor in ecology, evolutionary biology and bioengineering at the University of California–Irvine. He also completed post-doctoral work on the functional morphology of amphibians at the University of California.

The Marlene V. Shaw Biology Lecture Series is funded through an endowment established by the USI Foundation.

EPD Officer’s quick response save life of juvenile shooting victim of February shooting

0

On February 28, 20018 just after 2 pm, Evansville Police Department received a dispatch that a shooting had just occurred in the 2300 block of Haven Dr. The caller advised dispatchers that the victim had been shot in a lower extremity and that the victim was being transported to the hospital in a personal vehicle. At that time Officer Anna Gray observed a maroon SUV in the area of North Main St/Columbia St. attempting to frantically flag her down. Officer Gray investigated and realized that this vehicle contained the shooting victim from the Haven Dr address. Officer Gray observed profuse bleeding and quickly went into rescue mode and began rendering aid on a juvenile victim. Officer Bill Shirley arrived and assisted Officer Gray with maneuvering the body of the larger victim to the point where Officer Gray could apply a combat tourniquet to the leg of the victim. Officer Nathan Jones also arrived on scene quickly and assisted. The officers came together and quickly fo rmulated a plan to place the victim in the back of Officer Jones’ patrol vehicle for the quickest possible transport to Deaconess Midtown Hospital, which was nearby. Had it not been for the diligence, quick thinking, and team work of these veteran officers the juvenile victim would not have survived his wounds.
