WHAT TIME IS IT?

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUEâ€Â will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?
IS IT TRUE that the Evansville Thunderbolts have made their exit from the playoffs after winning the first game on home ice in front of a paltry crowd that was let in FREE?…the Thunderbolts management at simply $10 per head shredded nearly $25,000 that could have been taken in at the box office suggest that there may not be a sufficient market in Evansville area to support a profitable hockey team even when they make the playoffs?…the reality of the financial losses that are now being absorbed by the taxpayers of Evansville could eventually put an end to the ice hockey sport experiment started by former Mayor Weinzapfel as he was kicking off his campaign dreams of becoming governor of Indiana? …we must remind our readers once again that the Ford Center was advertised by Weinzapfel’s puppet consultants to break even on operations and pay its own loan of $127 million off from operating profits?
IS IT TRUE it was announced yesterday that Tropicana that just finished the land based casino in downtown Evansville that took the place of “the boat†after many years has been packaged up and sold to a new owner?…the most recent owner was the legendary Wall Street investor Carl Icahn who retained ownership of the Tropicana properties for 8 years prior to selling them off to Eldorado Resorts of Reno, Nevada for $1.85 Billion?…this is not surprising as Mr. Icahn has rehabilitated many a company and usually make a very good return for himself and his investors?…the reviews on the new downtown onshore casino have been very postive and we hope to see Eldorado have many prosperous years in downtown Evansville’s most successful entertainment venue?
IS IT TRUE that the number $1.85 Billion is a very large amount of money and should give some perspective to the hole that the City of Evansville has dug for itself by ignoring to have a continuous maintenance plan in place for infrastructure?…between the EPA mandated repairs to the archaic sewer system that will eventually consume close to a billion dollars, the dilapidated water pipes that explode every year in the winter, the miles and miles of sidewalks that aren’t fit to be walked on, plus the pothole filled roads, the City of Evansville is on the hook for at least $1.85 Billion of maintenance?…it was recently revealed that Vanderburgh County is in a similar financial rat hole with over $650 million deferred maintenance issues to deal with too?…that puts people who live in both the city and the county unwilling participants in what is a boondoggle of neglect that may eventually cost the taxpayers of Vanderburgh County close to $3 Billion?…that is enough money to buy two casino brands lock, stock, and barrel?…it is hard to imagine just how much negligence has been exposed locally in the last 10 years?
IS IT TRUE next month our property spring tax payments are due? Â …we predict that there are going to alot of upset people when they get their tax notices?
IS IT TRUE it was just announced that the 8th District Republican Congressional candidate, Dr. Richard Moss has raised $100,000 since the last reporting period?  …its looks like his opponent attempt to paint Dr. Moss as a right wing nut job has failed on deaf ears? …it looksd like voters may be upset with the callous disregard that 8th District Congressmen Larry Bucshon has shown towards them by not debating his opponent has helped contribute to the influx of dollars to Dr. Moss’s campaign?
IS IT TRUE that 8th District Congressional Republican primary candidate Dr. Richard Moss has publically stated that he wants to end birthright citizenship, block amnesty programs, defund sanctuary cities, deport all illegal immigrants, terminate the diversity VISA lottery, encourage merit-based immigration, build a wall and secure our border?  …we would like to know what Congressman Larry Bucshon’s positions are on these important national issues before the upcoming Republican primary?
IS IT TRUE that the political newcomers in local politics better pay special attention to voting people by absentee ballots?
IS IT TRUE we remember in years past if a candidate running for political office turned down an Evansville Courier and Press invitation to publicaly debate their opponent they would had been taken to task?
IS IT TRUE that last night U.S. Senate Republican primary candidate Mike Braum and Vanderburgh County Commission Republican primary candidate Steve Hammer “MEET AND GREET†reception at the Roca Bar-North was a big sucess?
Todays “Readers Poll†question is: If the election for the United States Senate was held today who would you vote for?

AGENDA of Vanderburgh County Board of Commissioners
April 17, 2018 at 3:00 pm, Room 301
An Evansville man was set to face a jury trial in his case with the Evansville Police Department. This all started in 2015 when Evansville police saw 55-year-old Doug Schlop speeding.
Scholp says when he got home the officers pulled into his driveway and forced their way into his garage. Scholp says that’s when he was attacked and beaten and even tased.
He was charged with resisting law enforcement but he was acquitted after the police body camera video was released. He was set to take EPD to trial back in March after officers denied any wrongdoing in the case.
Now, the EPD and its officers involved have agreed to have a judgment entered against them.
In a statement, EPD said in part “On March 7, 2018, the City of Evansville resolved a lawsuit filed by Douglas Schlop, in which he made various legal claims against two EPD officers and the City. The City and its officers denied all claims of wrongdoing. However, the city used a rule of procedure to resolve the matter for an amount paid by the city’s insurance company. As a result, the case was resolved by agreement of the parties and an agreed order.â€
Evansville Police Department and the ALICE Training Institute have teamed up to bring ALICE Training Instructor Certification to Evansville, IN, on June 4-5, 2018. The course will be held at the CK Newsome Center 100 E. Walnut Street, Evansville, IN 47713
This two-day instructor course is designed to teach proactive survival strategies for violent intruder or active shooter incidents. The goal of the ALICE program is to provide individuals with survival-enhancing options for those critical moments in the gap between when a violent situation begins and when law enforcement arrives on scene. The price of the training is $595, and registration can be completed online at www.AliceTraining.com
ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacu ate and is a useful strategy for everyone: law enforcement, schools, universities, hospitals, businesses, and places of worship. Completing the ALICE Training Instructor Certification course provides individuals with certification in ALICE and allows them the opportunity to bring the strategies back to their places of work. Additionally, registrants will gain access to exclusive ALICE resources.
ALICE is in line with recommendations from Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Health and Human Services, Federal Emergency Management Agency, White House, Department of Education, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and some Federal and State agencies.
About ALICE Training Institute
ALICE training is the original options-based response program that was designed to replace an inadequate secure-in-place mandated response plan. ALICE addresses the fallacies of a one-size-fits-all response plan by explaining the truths and realities of Violent Int ruder events. The reality is that extremely tragic outcomes in these events can be mitigated.
They are very much survivable. Through training and empowerment, citizens can apply the ALICE strategies and improve survival chances in any environment where they may find themselves confronted by an active shooter or violent intruder. ALICE strategies are now also mirrored and recommended by many Federal and State official guidelines.T
The service “may not” deploy any of the dozen small surface combatants this year despite officials’ previous plans to deploy several to join the 7th and 5th Fleets in Singapore and Bahrain respectively, the U.S. Naval Institute first reported on April 11.
Given the embarrassing cost overruns and frequent mechanical failures that have plagued the program, the exquisitely-detailed report suggests that the Navy has run out of patience for the disappointment mill that is the Littoral Combat Ship, once the backbone of the future fleet that could have 355 ships.
Here’s the money graf from USNI News explaining the strange lack of upcoming deployments:
Three of the Navy’s four original LCSs are in maintenance now, and four of the eight block-buy ships that have commissioned already are undergoing their initial Post Shakedown Availabilities (PSA), Cmdr. John Perkins, spokesman for Naval Surface Force Pacific, told USNI News.
In addition to the deploying ships themselves being in maintenance, so too are the training ships that will be required to help train and certify the crews. The Navy upended its LCS training and manning plans in 2016 when then-SURFOR commander Vice Adm. Tom Rowden announced a change to a blue-gold crewing model and a ship reorganization … not only does the deployable ship have to be in the water and ready for operations, but so does the training ship.
It’s clearly not just a matter of organizational chance that’s complicated the deployment of the LCS. Not only did the Navy reduce the number of LCSs ordered from Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics back in 2014 out of concerns over the vessel’s performance, but a review of the Navy’s LCS fleet by the Pentagon’s operational testing and evaluation arm, conducted between 2016 and 2017 and published in January 2018, revealed significant structural problems with the program’s Freedom and Independence variants.
This problems include: a concerning deficit in combat system elements (namely radar systems), limited anti-ship missile self-defense capabilities, and a lack of redundancies for vital systems necessary to reduce the chance that “a single hit will result in loss of propulsion, combat capability, and the ability to control damage and restore system operation.”
“Neither LCS variant is survivable in high-intensity combat,” according to the DoD report. “Although the ships incorporate capabilities to reduce their susceptibility to attack, testing of analogous capabilities in other ship classes demonstrated that such capabilities have limited effectiveness in high-intensity combat.”
While the report recommends that the Navy continue to address the Pentagon’s recommendations, the service is already eyeing other hulls to take on the coastal combat operations initially envisioned for the LCS. In July 2017, the service posted official requirements for a brand new frigate under the Guided Missile Frigate Replacement Program or FFG(X) that will “employ unmanned systems to penetrate and dwell in contested environments” — basically, be the LCS but without the headache (and the additional costs of upgrading each LCS warship to an FFG(X) configuration.)
“In many ways, this FFG(X) design goes beyond what today’s LCS can do, particularly as it relates to surface warfare,” as USNI News put it at the time. “The RFI states the frigate should be able to conduct independent operations in a contested environment or contribute to a larger strike group, depending on combatant commander needs.”
Will 2018 be the last gasp for the troubled LCS program? Knowing the DOD, probably not — but the USNI News report on the lack of LCS deployments only solidifies one truth about the vessel: LCS, as The War Zone put it, almost definitely stands for ‘Little Crappy Ship.’
