Gov. Holcomb Statement on Passage of Firefly Bill

0

Governor Eric J. Holcomb offered the following statement regarding the passage of SEA 236, which makes the Say’s Firefly the official state insect:

“I know this bill bugged some of my legislative friends, but the truth is it’s a big deal to young students around the state who have reached out to us in support—particularly students from Cumberland Elementary School in West Lafayette. They’ve shown incredible perseverance and have advocated for the Say’s Firefly to be the official state insect for several years. Beyond the satisfaction these kids will feel when they look out on a hot Indiana summer night and see the state insect flashing away, the real beauty of this bill is the civic engagement it inspired in our youngest citizens. It’s taught them a great deal about how our lawmaking process works—and that if they are engaged, they can make a real difference.”

Stein nets COY honors, four Eagles claim All-GLVC

0

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball Coach Rick Stein was named the Chuck Mallander Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year for the second straight season and third time in his 19-year career at the helm of the Screaming Eagles.

Stein has led the Eagles to a 24-3 overall record and a 16-2 mark in GLVC play in 2017-18. His Eagles have stifled opponents throughout the year with a defense that ranks first in the league in points per game (56.6) and opponent field goal percentage (.355).

After losing five seniors from a team that went 24-5 overall and 16-2 in the GLVC a year ago, Stein led his squad to its second consecutive GLVC East Division title in 2017-18. His squads currently rank No. 15 in the Division II Media Poll and No. 17 in the WBCA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll.

In addition to Stein, four other Eagles were honored with All-GLVC accolades Tuesday. Senior guard/forward Kaydie Grooms (Marshall, Illinois) and senior forward Morgan Dahlstrom (Grayslake, Illinois) were named first-team All-GLVC; while senior guard Randa Harshbarger (Philo, Illinois) and junior center Kacy Eschweiler (St. Charles, Missouri) were named third-team All-Conference.

Grooms, who was one of three players to be selected as a unanimous pick on the first team after earning second-team honors a year ago, averaged 17.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in 2017-18. Dahlstrom, a third-team honoree in 2016-17, was sixth in the GLVC with 16.8 points per game, while her 10.1 rebounds per contest were a GLVC-best.

Both Dahlstrom and Grooms averaged 18.2 points per game in GLVC play, a mark that ranked fourth in the league.

Harshbarger and Eschweiler are collecting their first-career All-GLVC nods. Harshbarger averaged 6.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.5 steals per contest, while Eschweiler posted a career-high 9.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.1 blocks per appearance.

USI, the No. 2 seed in the GLVC Tournament for the second straight year, travels to Edwardsville, Illinois, and the Vadalabene Center to take on the No. 7 seed, William Jewell College, in the quarterfinals Thursday at noon.

All of USI’s games this weekend can be heard on WSWI 95.7 FM and watched on the GLVC Sports Network. Links for live stats, audio and GLVCSN coverage can be accessed at GoUSIEagles.com.

Evansville Signs Veteran Gardner To Extension

0

The Evansville Otters have signed outfielder Jeff Gardner to a contract extension.

Gardner, a Louisville, Ky. native, joined the Otters midway through the 2016 season after spending time in the Washington Nationals’ organization.

“Jeff’s emergence as the top power hitter in the Frontier League was vital to our success last year,” Otters manager Andy McCauley said. “He made some big adjustments to his swing in the off-season and the hard work really paid off.”

In 91 games with Evansville last season, Gardner hit .278 with 23 home runs and 86 RBIs. His 23 homers tied Shayne Houck’s mark set in 2014 for the Otters’ single-season franchise record.

“He will be a big part of the success we have this season,” McCauley said. “His strong work ethic and professionalism should be an example for newcomers and young returners.

“I look forward to seeing Jeff again in right field at Bosse.”

A 2017 Frontier League All-Star selection, Gardner won the Home Run Derby presented by MK Orthopedics in Joliet, Ill. with 14 home runs in the final round. He finished with 41 total homers that night, the highest total among the 12 competitors in the event.

Gardner played collegiately at the University of Louisville and he was named to the 2014 Louisville Slugger and NCBWA All-America second teams after his senior season, in which he hit .313 with nine home runs and 68 RBIs.

He was drafted in the eighth round of the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft by the Nationals and split time between Auburn and Hagerstown from 2014-16.

In 45 games with the Otters in 2016, Gardner hit .242 with six home runs and 24 RBIs.

The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions. Group packages and season tickets are now on sale. For more information, visit evansvilleotters.com or call 812-435-8686.

Evansville to host Gold Medal Squared Volleyball Clinic

0

Clinic is one of the top in the nation

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – One of the top volleyball coaches clinics will make its way to the University of Evansville as the Gold Medal Squared clinic will be held at Meeks Family Fieldhouse from July 20-22, 2018.

UE is the first Missouri Valley Conference school to host the clinic and just the second school from Indiana to do so, joining Notre Dame.

Their staff brings 12 NCAA Championships and 6 Olympic medals to the table: an incredibly unique opportunity coming to town for any sport. Beyond volleyball, this is a once-in-in-a-lifetime opportunity for any coach wanting to continue to grow as an educator. This opportunity is tailored for coaches at all levels from youth and elementary to college levels.

This clinic is open to all participants regardless of how much coaching or playing experience you have.  UE is one of just 10 universities in the United States to host one of these clinics this year.  Among the things the clinic concentrates on will be motor learning, reps, drills and giving feedback.

“This is a great chance to showcase our university, and create awareness towards our program, athletic department, and facilities in general,” UE head volleyball coach Manolo Concepcion said.  “I want to thank our athletic director Mark Spencer and Associate Athletic Director Sarah Solinsky for their total support in this project.”

Among the staff that will be on hand will be Chris McGown (Named the MPSF and AVCA Coach of the Year for BYU), Tom Black (USA National Team coach and University of Georgia Head Coach), Joe Trinsey (Technical Coordinator (Statistician) of the USA National Team) and more.
