U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) today issued the following statement after President Trump expelled 60 Russian diplomats identified as intelligence agents in response to a Russian poison attack in the U.K. earlier this month.
“The United States will not tolerate Russian aggression toward America or our allies,†Messer said. “I applaud President Trump for holding Russia accountable and putting American interests first through strong, decisive action.â€
The Evansville Otters have signed outfielder Zach Welz to a contract extension.
The Otters signed Welz, a Grass Valley, Calif. native, last August after he spent time in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization.
“Zach was a huge boost to our clubhouse and team last year,†Otters manager Andy McCauley said. “He was a plus defender in the outfield for us late in the season.â€
In 20 games with Evansville in 2017, Welz batted .250 with 17 hits and six RBIs. He accounted for two doubles, a triple and home run while also walking 11 times.
“Zach should figure into the middle of our batting order,†McCauley said. “We look forward to having him back healthy.â€
In affiliated baseball, Welz split time between Arkansas, Inland Empire, Burlington and Mobile playing for the Angels’ organization from 2015-17. Playing 145 games over the three-year span, Welz batted .238 and finished with 53 RBIs and 18 doubles.
Welz played collegiately at Texas Southern University in Houston and as a senior in 2015, he batted .281 with 28 RBIs and five doubles.

Most people remember Marcia Yockey as the zany, pony-tailed weather forecaster on local television, but her other skills included piloting a Piper Cub airplane.
In this late 1950s image, she appears with the Easter Bunny at the Evansville airport, probably after flying him there. The Bunny was part of a promotion at the Sears store, and when she wasn’t on television, Yockey was active in community affairs. During World War II, she had interrupted her pre-med studies at Evansville College to work for the U. S. Weather Bureau, a move which unexpectedly altered her career plans.
In 1953, Yockey joined the new WFIE television station, becoming one of the first woman weather forecasters in the nation, as well as a local celebrity. She retired in 1988.

The EVSC Foundation is hosting a public benefit show featuring the award-winning Will Read and Sing for Food (WRASFF) troupe to raise money for EVSC’s arts programming on Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m., at Central High School Auditorium (5400 North First Ave, Evansville, IN 47710)
WRASFF offers audiences a unique mix of live music and humor essays. Since 2011, WRASFF has raised over $139,000 for 40-some charities in southern Indiana. The show earned a 2016 arts award from the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana.
Special musical guest is singer-songwriter Jason Wilber, who is the long-time lead guitarist for folk legend John Prine. Rolling Stone Magazine named Wilber one of the “10 New Country Artists You Need to Know,†after the release of his 2017 album, “Reaction Time.â€
Wilber’s TV and radio appearances include Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Colbert Report, The Grand Ole Opry, Live with Regis and Kathy Lee, CNN Entertainment Week, Mountain Stage, Austin City Limits, The Late Show with David Letterman, and Live From Here with Chris Thile.

Mary Allen, owner of Sixth Street Soapery and Evansville Pedicab and winner of this year’s Evansville Leadership Individual Award, will read a brief story from her podcast, The Mary Movement, which highlights the good in humanity.
From Carnegie Hall to the London Palladium and throughout an endless stream of well-known venues in North America — Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn.; Wolf Trap in Virginia; Massey Hall in Canada; and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado — Wilber has backed up Prine for more than 20 years. He appears on Prine’s Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning albums.
Wilber, who lives in Bloomington, Ind., will be spending most of this spring and summer touring to promote Prine’s new album, “The Tree of Forgiveness.†In between Prine gigs, Wilber promotes his own music.
Tapp is front man for The Cold Stares, a hard-rocking, soul-lifting band formed in 2008. The two-man band has played at Piano’s in New York City, the Viper Room in Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, festivals, and recently opened for Grand Funk Railroad and Cracker at the Lincoln Amphitheatre.
Dominica West Indies native Zion, now living in Evansville, has opened for The Wailers (of Bob Marley fame) and tours inside and outside the U.S. He will be backed up by Needham.

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb today announced that he will appoint Lesley Crane to lead the Indiana Department of Administration (IDOA) effective April 2. Current IDOA Commissioner Jessica Robertson has announced she will leave that post to take on a new opportunity at Purdue University.
“Lesley is a problem-solver who has dealt with a broad range of issues as chief of staff and chief counsel to the Indiana House of Representatives,†Gov. Holcomb said. “She is well-respected and has worked with many different constituencies, which is a big part of the job at IDOA.â€
Crane has worked for the Indiana House of Representatives’ Republican Caucus since 2006, serving as chief counsel from 2006 to 2012 and chief of staff from 2012 to 2017. Prior to her work for the Indiana General Assembly, Crane worked for Krieg DeVault, LLP in various roles from 1999 to 2006. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and Spanish from Butler University and a law degree from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law.
Robertson has served as IDOA commissioner since 2013, when she was appointed by then-Gov. Mike Pence. During Robertson’s tenure leading IDOA, she oversaw the creation of Bicentennial Plaza, implemented electronic contracting and saved the state hundreds of millions of dollars through strategic cost-saving initiatives.
“I am grateful to Gov. Holcomb for the opportunity to serve in his administration,†Robertson said. “It has been an honor to be a part of his team, and I look forward to watching them continue the state’s record of good government at a great taxpayer value.â€
Robertson will join Purdue University in April as assistant director of auxiliary operations. In this role, she will lead Purdue’s sourcing and contracting functions as well as other key strategic initiatives at the university.
“Jessica is a great role model for all Hoosiers and, especially, young women,†Gov. Holcomb said. “She learned the ropes of state government as a governor’s fellow for Gov. Daniels and earned her way to the state’s top post in her field. I wish her success and happiness in this new role at Purdue, and I thank her for her years of service to our state.â€

In 1994, the Evansville Police Department became an accredited law enforcement agency through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA). Since then the department has remained an accredited agency. On Saturday, the Evansville Police Department was reaccredited for the eighth time by CALEA at its conference in Frisco, Texas. According to CALEA less than five percent of police agencies in the United States are accredited. Being an accredited agency is the result of the professionalism, hard work and dedication to service of all the men and women who work for the department. The department individually recognizes the department’s Accreditation Manager, Lieutenant Scott Doan, for all his efforts in directing this reaccreditation cycle.
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA) was created in 1979 as a credentialing authority thr ough the joint efforts of law enforcement’s major executive associations:
• International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)
• National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE)
• National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA)
• Police Executive Research Forum (PERF)
The purpose of CALEA’s Accreditation Programs is to improve the delivery of public safety services, primarily by: maintaining a body of standards, developed by public safety practitioners, covering a wide range of up-to-date public safety initiatives; establishing and administering an accreditation process; and recognizing professional excellence.
Specifically, CALEA’s goals are to:
• Strengthen crime prevention and control capabilities; • Formalize essential management procedures; • Establish fair and nondiscriminatory personnel practices; • Improve service delivery; • Solidify interagency cooperation and coordination; and • Inc rease community and staff confidence in the agency.
The CALEA Accreditation Process is a proven modern management model; once implemented, it presents the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), on a continuing basis, with a blueprint that promotes the efficient use of resources and improves service delivery—regardless of the size, geographic location, or functional responsibilities of the agency.
This accreditation program provides public safety agencies an opportunity to voluntarily demonstrate that they meet an established set of professional standards which:
• Require an agency to develop a comprehensive, well thought out, uniform set of written directives. This is one of the most successful methods for reaching administrative and operational goals, while also providing direction to personnel.
• Provide the necessary reports and analyses a CEO needs to make fact-based, informed management decisions.
• Require a preparedness program be pu t in place—so an agency is ready to address natural or man-made critical incidents.
• Are a means for developing or improving upon an agency’s relationship with the community.
• Strengthen an agency’s accountability, both within the agency and the community, through a continuum of standards that clearly define authority, performance, and responsibilities.
• Can limit an agency’s liability and risk exposure because it demonstrates that internationally recognized standards for law enforcement have been met, as verified by a team of independent outside CALEA-trained assessors.
Facilitates an agency’s pursuit of professional excellence.
