Gov. Holcomb outlines school safety goals and requests in letter to legislative leaders

0

Governor Eric Holcomb has asked Indiana lawmakers to authorize $5 million more for school safety spending before they adjourn for the 2018 legislative session. The governor sent a letter to Republican and Democrat House and Senate leaders with the request and outlined other steps his administration will lead over the next several months to improve school safety.

Holcomb outlined his request with Senator Long and Speaker Bosma on Wednesday and has discussed school safety matters with Attorney General Curtis Hill and Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Jennifer McCormick in the past several days.

The governor’s letter is attached.

Otters give extension to Cummings; sign Nicely

0

The Evansville Otters have signed left-handed pitcher Kyano Cummings to a contract extension.

Cummings, a Cicero, N.Y. native, joined the Otters before last season after starting the year with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the Atlantic League.

“Kyano is coming off a great rookie year,” Otters manager Andy McCauley said. “We’re excited to have him back for this season.”

In 50 appearances on the mound with Evansville in 2017, Cummings struck out 58 batters and finished with a 1.22 ERA in 73.2 innings.

He also earned seven saves and was named the Jason Simontacchi Rookie of the Year in a league-wide process that included broadcasters, general managers, field managers, coaches and local media.

“We saw last year that he is a versatile reliever that can throw everyday,” McCauley said. “He will be a prominent figure in our bullpen during the late innings.”

Cummings graduated from Siena College in 2016 and he set the Saints’ single-season strikeout record with 91 during his senior year. Cummings finished his college career with 169 strikeouts in 195.1 innings.

Prior to Evansville, Cummings also played in the California Winter League, where he finished 4-1 with a 1.08 ERA in 19.1 innings.

The Otters made an additional move, signing left-handed pitcher Austin Nicely.

Nicely was drafted in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft from Spotswood High School in Penn Laird, Va. by the Houston Astros and split time between Greeneville, Tri-City and Quad Cities from 2013-16.

He pitched 131.2 innings in affiliated baseball, made 23 starts and won seven games in finishing with a 5.47 ERA in four seasons.

“Austin is an experienced starter that we’re hoping can fill in the rotation,” McCauley said. “He impressed (pitching coach) Max (Peterson) and I with his bullpen sessions and he was recommended to us by a trusted scout with Seattle Mariners.”

Evansville will celebrate Bosse Field’s Opening Night May 11 against the Washington Wild Things at 6:35 p.m. The Otters are hosting a job fair Saturday at Bosse Field from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions. Group packages and season tickets are now on sale. Single game tickets will go on sale April 7. For more information, visit evansvilleotters.com or call 812-435-8686.

First Marion County judicial retention interviews begin Monday

0

IL for www.theindianalwayer.com

Marion County’s new Judicial Selection Committee will begin the county’s first judicial retention interviews next week.

A group of 17 judges will sit for interviews with the 14-person committee on Monday and Tuesday. Chaired by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Mark Massa, the committee will make recommendations for retention based on a new merit selection process that replaced Marion County’s former judicial slating system.

The 17 judges whose terms expire in 2018 and who are seeking retention include: Lisa Borges, Linda Brown, Sheila Carlisle, John MT Chavis II, Steven Eichholtz, Alicia Gooden, Clayton Graham, John Hanley, Grant Hawkins, Amy Jones, James Joven, Helen Marchal, William Nelson, Clark Rogers, Jose Salinas, Mark Stoner and Heather Welch. The interviews are open to the public, and the full schedule can be found here.

Three Marion County Judges – Democrats Thomas Carroll and Rebekah Pierson-Treacy and Republican Michael Keele – will retire at the end of 2018 and, thus, will not go through the retention process. The Judicial Selection Committee is now accepting applications to fill those impending vacancies and will send three names for each vacancy to Gov. Eric Holcomb for consideration.

Rep. Messer Issues Statement on North Korean Meeting Invitation to President Trump

Earlier , Said Trump would be Deserving of Nobel Peace Prize if North Korea Disarms

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) tonight issued the following statement after a South Korean official announced details of a potential meeting between President Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un.

“Tonight’s unprecedented announcement shows President Trump’s peace through strength strategy is working,” Messer said. “North Korea is signaling for the first time a willingness to discuss disarming its nuclear capabilities. I applaud the President and I’m hopeful this can lead to peace.”

Earlier today, Messer released a statement applauding the President’s efforts saying if North Korea disarms, President Trump would be deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.

“If North Korea talks lead to concrete action, President Trump should be well on his way to his own Nobel Peace Prize. North Korea is signaling for the first time a willingness to discuss disarming its nuclear capabilities. If this happens, it would be a direct result of President Trump’s strong leadership and decisive action toward the brutal North Korean tyrant. Meaningful talks would be more progress than we saw during the entire Obama Administration,” Messer said. “President Obama received a Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for being a charming presidential candidate. If North Korea disarms, President Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize would be well deserved.”

Messer worked with the Trump Administration to implement the harshest sanctions ever on North Korea.
