LETTER TO THE EDITOR: ALFONSO VIDAL SUPPORTS STEVE HAMMER FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER
IN SUPPORT OF STEVE HAMMER FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER
I have known Steve Hammer through common friends for the last several years, but really got to know him a lot closer these last few months after he asked me to join his campaign. Based on what I have learned about him during this time, I trust that he will be a good steward of the resources of Vanderburgh county.
Steve has done an outstanding job running his campaign and raising an impressive amount of funds almost singlehandedly. He understands and uses the available technology to reach a younger demographic. I have been impressed by the number of people that know and trust him and how many of them are willing to go the extra mile for him. He will be a great salesman and representative for the county.
As his fundraising co-chair, I have had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Steve. And everything he has shared with me during this time I have verified to be true. For example, chamber officials asked him to run which I have verified first hand with past chamber officials that this was true. This doesn’t mean that he has an endorsement from the Chamber, but he has never claimed that to me or have I ever heard him say that.Â
He is a successful small business owner, very hard working, and truly cares about this community. All the pictures and social media posts are true, it is amazing how he keeps everybody in the campaign informed all the time of his schedule. It is an impressive and tiring schedule. He is not a politician, but he is a fast learner of the issues. Sometimes I find that the depth of knowledge in each individual issue might not be all there at first, but he will quickly inform himself, learn, and make an informed decision on what to support in his platform. Â
Steve has a beautiful family which is a reflection of the true character of a man. He is genuine and transparent. He has been quick to apologize when in the wrong, which is a trait that is hard to find.Â
SINCERELY,Alfonso R. Vidal

Volunteers Sought For 2018 Ohio River Sweep
The Ohio River Sweep is a riverbank cleanup initiative that extends the length of the Ohio River and a lot of its tributaries.
Last year, thousands of volunteers removed litter, especially plastics, from the Ohio River. This is the largest environmental event of its kind and encompasses six states.
Volunteers should meet at Hays Boat Ramp from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. If you participate in this annual cleanup effort, volunteers should wear clothes that can get dirty and closed toe shoes.
Trash bags and a limited number of gloves will be provided to volunteers. Each volunteer will receive a free T-Shirt.
The Ohio River Sweep is coordinated by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) and other state and environmental agencies from Pennsylvania to Illinois.
Big Rivers Electric Ends Contract With City Of Henderson
Big Rivers Electric Ends Contract With City Of Henderson
Big Rivers Electric will no longer run the City of Henderson’s coal-fire plant beginning in 2019. The Henderson-based generation and co-op has operated the Station Two plant since the facility opened in 1972, says Jennifer Keach, the co-op’s spokesperson.
Big Rivers Electric is seeking commission approval to establish a regulatory asset to defer contract-related expenses. The Rural Utilities Service has told Big Rivers that their request would be met with no objection.
Although Big Rivers and HMP&L have discussed the possibility of their termination, the city is left in a bit of a lurch.
HMP&L will spend the next couple of months evaluating its options. Those options include finding another operator for Station Two, purchasing wholesale power from the market, or retiring the plant next spring.
Keach said all of Big Rivers’ existing coal supply deals will expire before May 31, 2019 but will continue to own and operate the Wilson coal plants located in western Kentucky.
