Highland Challenger League Kicks Off 5th Year

0
Today was one of the days kids dream about when the cold winter winds come blowing through Evansville. It’s the pure, raw emotion of getting back out onto the baseball diamond that gets everyone through the cold winter months. So it was fitting that Saturday was beautiful outside as the Highland Challenger kicked off its 5th year.

It’s easy to tell the excitement when at a Challenger League game. The kids faces light up when they make contact with the ball and head down the first base line. The kids were especially glowy as they were reminded that they are going to the Little League World Series to play on youth baseball’s biggest stage.

There are two things that set this Challenger League apart: no cost to the families participating and no child is ever left out. It’s those two pillars that will make things tough when planning out the trip to Williamsport.

It will take a lot of dollars and planning to get all members of the Highland Challenger League and family to the LLWS. Today wasn’t just the kick off for baseball games, it was also the first big chance for the organization to start fundraising.

There will plenty of ways to help get the members of the league to the LLWS. For a more detailed look head to the league’s Facebook page. There’s a list of events, which includes a game at historic Bosse Field.

Through his hard work and dedication to public safety, Trooper Hunter Manning has been selected as the “2017 Trooper of the District” for the Evansville District. Manning received his award earlier today at the Indiana State Police Spring Awards Ceremony held at the Indiana Government Center in Indianapolis. This award is presented to the Trooper at each district who has achieved outstanding enforcement efforts in the area of traffic and criminal enforcement, case and crash investigation, public information programs and community service and who has exemplified the professionalism and integrity expected of an Indiana State Trooper.

Manning is a four-year veteran and is currently assigned to the Evansville District All Crimes Policing Unit, which primarily concentrates on drug interdiction and DUI enforcement. During 2017, Manning arrested 103 individuals resulting in 190 criminal charges. He initiated drug offense investigations including Heroin, Methamphetamine, Marijuana and Cocaine. Manning’s traffic enforcement included over 800 traffic contacts and 27 driving while intoxicated arrests. Manning is also a Field Training Officer.

Lieutenant Brian Bailey, Commander of the Evansville District, said “Manning’s positive attitude and work ethic make him an appreciated leader in the Evansville District. He is a highly valuable asset to the community and to the Indiana State Police.”

Tips for staying safe, avoiding scams by Wendy McNamara

0

Indiana is known for unpredictable weather, and that is especially true as the seasons change. Spring and summer months can bring extreme and dangerous weather conditions.

The Indiana Department of Insurance recently released a list of tips for how to prepare for disasters, what to do before and after a storm, and how to avoid home repair scams.

  • Understand extreme weather hazards: Check the weather forecast regularly to better anticipate severe storms.
  • Create a home inventory: A free app is available for iPhone and Android to make managing your personal inventory easy and aid in the claims process.
  • Collect your insurance information: Review your insurance policies and make sure you know what is and isn’t covered.
  • Prepare for the worst: Take necessary precautions like clearing your yard of debris, latching doors, securing shutters and creating evacuation plans for your family.
  • Report insurance claims as soon as possible: Following a natural disaster, contact your insurer with relevant information and take photos and videos of damage before starting clean-up.
  • Protect yourself from fraud: Home repair fraud is common after natural disasters, so be diligent when looking for contractors.

March Indiana Employment Report

0

Unemployment rate was unchanged over the month at 3.2 percent

Indiana’s unemployment rate stands at 3.2 percent for March and remains lower than the national rate of 4.1 percent. With the exception of one month when it was equal (October 2014), Indiana’s unemployment rate now has been below the U.S. rate for more than four years. The monthly unemployment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force.

Indiana’s labor force had a net increase of 7,513 over the previous month. This was a result of 2,077 unemployed residents no longer seeking employment within the past four weeks, and a 9,590 increase in residents employed. Indiana’s total labor force, which includes both Hoosiers employed and those seeking employment, stands at 3.32 million, and the state’s 63.8 percent labor force participation rate remains above the national rate of 62.9 percent.

In addition, Indiana’s initial unemployment insurance claims continue to be at historical lows.

Lincoln School to Open In-House Food Pantry

Lincoln School to Open In-House Food Pantry
Monday, April 23
10:30 a.m. – noon
Lincoln School, 635 Lincoln Ave.
On Monday, Lincoln School will celebrate the grand opening of its very own food pantry. The school-located pantry is the only one of its kind in the city and in the entire Tri-State area, and will support families attending Lincoln School.
According to Lincoln Principal Ronnetha Darrett, the food pantry has been two years in the making. “We knew that many of our families needed assistance and that they had to travel to food banks, sometimes out of our neighborhood to get food for their families. This started us thinking ‘Why can’t we have a food bank here?'”
Fast forward two years and Lincoln is ready to open their own pantry. Darrett says the opening is only possible because of generous support from the community, including the EVSC Foundation, AARP, Carver Community Center, Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office, and countless community supporters.
The pantry will be open three days a week by appointment only and families interested will need to submit applications. The school plans to serve approximately 30 to 40 families each week.
