USI-Rockhurst Softball DH moved to Friday

Due to rain and thunderstorms in the forecast Saturday, University of Southern Indiana Softball has moved its Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Rockhurst University to Friday at the USI Softball Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

The Screaming Eagles (19-16, 8-8 GLVC) also host William Jewell College in a GLVC twinbill Sunday at noon.

Rockhurst enters Friday’s games with a 16-21 overall record and a 10-6 mark in GLVC play; while William Jewell enters the weekend with a 20-16 overall record and a 7-9 mark in league action.

USI Softball Notes
• Recapping last week. USI Softball began the weekend by dropping both games of a GLVC doubleheader to host Truman State, falling 5-3 in game one and 5-1 in game two. The Eagles rebounded with a doubleheader sweep of Quincy, rallying for a 7-5 win in the opener before holding on for an 8-5 win in the nightcap.

• Eagles go deep. The Eagles hit a combined nine home runs last week, including six in their doubleheader sweep of Quincy. USI, which improved its season total to 24 home runs, scored  15 of its 19 runs last weekend via the long ball.

• Last week’s leaders. Senior third baseman Mena Fulton hit .429 with a double, home run and two RBIs to lead USI at the plate last week, while junior second baseman Claire Johnson hit .417 with three home runs and six RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Allison Schubert hit .357 with three home runs and three RBIs, while sophomore pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt hit .364. Leonhardt, who was 1-1 with a save, racked up 13 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work.

• Season leaders. Schubert leads USI with a .380 batting average and a GLVC-best .778 slugging percentage. She is currently second in the GLVC with 11 home runs and is currently eighth with a team-high 32 RBIs. Johnson is hitting .336 with six triples, four home runs and 18 RBIs, while Leonhardt is 9-8 with a .227 opponent batting average and 117 strikeouts.

• Kunkle closing in on milestone. Head Coach Sue Kunkle is just nine wins shy of becoming the first coach in USI history to reach the 500-win plateau. She is currently 491-354-1 (.581) all-time during her 17-year career at the helm of the Eagles.

• Schubert joins elite club. Schubert is the eighth player in program history to hit 10 or more home runs in a single season. Her 11 home runs in 2018 are currently tied for fifth on USI’s single-season list.

• Hitting streaks. Seven different players have recorded hitting streaks of five games or better for the Eagles in 2018. Fulton, who had a nine-game streak earlier in the year, has the longest current streak at three games; while Johnson’s 11-game hitting streak was the longest of the year.

Jacob’s Village game scheduled for May 4 against Miners

The Evansville Otters and Jacob’s Village announced the continuation of a partnership for the 13th annual exhibition game on May 4 at 6:35 p.m. against the Southern Illinois Miners to benefit Jacob’s Village.

“This event has raised over $180,000 to support Jacob’s Village. Our goal is to hit $200,000 this year,” said Jacob’s Village Development Director Laura Hurt.

The mission of Jacob’s Village is to develop a safe, walk-able neighborhood community where people with disabilities and older adults can find meaningful relationships, housing that is affordable and accessible, and activities that encourage active minds and bodies.

As a part of the benefit, the Otters will host a “Diamond Dash” sponsored by Tracy Zeller Jewelry. The dash will give every woman over the age of 18 an opportunity to go onto the field to a player, but only a selected 25 tickets will have the chance during the game to dash for a $1,000 Tracy Zeller Jewelry shopping spree.

The game will also include free popcorn (while supplies last), door prizes, clowns and more.

“We would like to invite all of the Evansville community to come out Friday, May 4, to enjoy exciting Otters’ baseball, the $1,000 Diamond Dash, and to support a great cause. It’s really a fun night,” said Hurt.

Tickets for this year’s game may be purchased at all G.D. Ritzy’s locations, Bosse Field and Jacob’s Village beginning Friday. The Bosse Field box office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rationally and responsible way?
IS IT TRUE last week more than 90 employers set up booths at the C.K. Newsome Center in Evansville hoping to find qualified job candidates for their businesses?  …this worthy community event was sponsored by Southwest Indiana Chamber of Commerce and partnered with the WorkOne Southwest Indiana chapter, Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, and Congressmen Dr. Larry Bucshon?
IS IT TRUE we wonder why the “Reception/Registration” table located in the main lobby of this event had a large blue banner with only the name of Congressman Larry Buschon on it?  …that all of the directional signs located in the event parking lot had “Congressman Bucshon ‘s Job Fair and “Congressman Bucshon Event Parking” printed on them?
IS IT TRUE because of the wording on the “Reception/Registration” table and signage in the parking lot it looked like this event was a Congressman Larry Bucshon sponsored event only? …we hope that the Southwest Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the WorkOne Southwest Indiana chapter wasn’t openly promoting Congressman Larry Bucshon re-election bid?
IS IT TRUE at Monday night Evansville City Council meeting they decided to defer judgment on releasing federal, state and local funds to Echo Housing that is in a state of crisis due to the alleged theft of a small amount of money to pay real estate taxes by former Executive Director Stephanie Tenbarge? …the “Mole Nation” tells the City-County Observer that the alleged theft and mismanagement that has been reported to date could be a drop in the bucket of what has actually happened at Echo housing over the years?  …our “Moles” recommend that every financial transaction involving construction, repairs, maintenance, or securing the services of outside businesses should be investigated back as far as the statute of limitations governs? …they also feel that it is highly unlikely that the crime that has been alleged was not the only thing that went down and it’s possible that more than one person may well have received illegal benefits from having an association with Echo Housing? …the time is now to turn over every rock and hold the board of directors responsible for their failure to provide fiduciary oversight? …all who looked the other way, neglected their sworn duties, or put their hand in the cookie jar to steal taxpayer money should be prosecuted and exposed for their bad deeds? …members of our “Mole Nation” also predicts that when all said and done they wouldn’t be surprised if the police investigation and Forensic audit will reveal that questionable spending of ECHO Housing funds may be in the high six-figure range?  …all eyes are on at At-Large City Council member and Finance Chairman Jonathon Weaver (D) and 5th Ward Councilman Justin Elpers (R) to see if they will continue to hold ECHO Housing officials financially accountable?
IS IT TRUE we give five (5) cheers to City Council persons Jonathon Weaver, Justin Elpers, Missy Mosby, Connie Robinson, and Michelle Mercer for not only standing up for the taxpayers of this community but also for the at-risk clients of ECHO Housing?  …we are disappointed that 3rd Ward City Councilman John Hayden, CPA believed everything that was told to him by the Evansville DMD Director about the current economic status of ECHO Housing?  …when Mr. Hayden demand that City Council releases the ECHO Housing funds without knowing the results of the police investigation and the Forensic audit it hurt his chances of being re-elected to his 3rd Ward Council seat?  …we were told that Zach Heronemus (D) will announce in the near future that the shall be Councilman John Hayden, CPA opponent in the 2019 City Council election?
IS IT TRUE that the Courier and Press’s Jon Webb published a solid analysis of the state of violent crime in Evansville during 2018?…the picture is not bright at all as there have been many domestic violence incidents that turned into shootings and knifings that are symptoms of a society that is unable to cope with disagreement without pulling out a weapon?…the carnage of 2017 that landed Evansville a spot in the Final Four of homicide during the last three months of the year was mostly driven by drug traffickers who turned their guns on each other?…while that is a terrible thing for any city to have to deal with, drug dealers shooting drug dealers is not unexpected or particularly dangerous to anyone but the drug dealers?…this latest round of incidents is a deeper problem than having itinerant criminals coming to Evansville to sell drugs and having a turf war with other dirt bags?…what we are seeing this year ranks up there with the heroin needles showing up in children’s sand boxes in a public park that was exposed in 2009 by Evansville City Councilman Dr. Dan Adams and others?…at that time there were also hundreds of abandoned homes where drug users (not the same as drug dealers) would hang out to get high, trade drugs for sex, and plot petty property crimes?…parts of Evansville are very sick from a human ability to cope perspective and neglecting basic infrastructure while seeing basic costs of needs like power and water run to national highs contributes to the decision of some people to drop out of society and self-medicate with illegal drugs?
IS IT TRUE that yesterday members of the Vanderburgh County Commission give an impressive State Of The County address to the Evansville Rotary Club?  …that Commission President Bruce Ungethiem focus on the future expansion of the County jail?  …we found his remarks concerning that the Blue Ribbon Jail Study Committee has been meeting for four months compiling figures and options very interesting?  …Ungethiem comments that the expansion of the County jail is inevitable is spot on?  …that County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave remarks concerning future expansion of roads and utilities were extremely informative?  …she showed that members of the Vanderburgh County Commissioners are visionary and fiscally conservative?  …County Commissioner Ben Shoulders praised the Old National Event Plaza for improving the usage over last year?  …he was extremely effective in convincing Rotarians that members of the Vanderburgh County Commision are living within their means while investing our hard earned tax dollars in a conservative manner?  …we commend all three County Commissioners for presenting a well prepared and informative State Of The County speech?

Fourth Suspect Arrested In Connection With New Year’s Day Murder

APRIL 10TH, 2018 BRITNEY TAYLOR EVANSVILLE, INDIANA

A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection to the New Year’s Day murder of D’Angelo White. Noah Coleman was taken into custody during a traffic stop for his alleged role in the death of White.

The traffic stop happened just after 4:00 this afternoon along I-69 near the Covert Avenue exit. Two other people have also been arrested for assisting a criminal.

In February, Derrick Butts, Charissa Robinson, and Mykel Blair were arrested and charged with murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery resulting in death, and attempted robbery resulting in death.

Investigators believe Robinson lured White to South Bedford Avenue to buy marijuana from him. Police believe the drug deal was arranged with the purpose of robbing White.

Authorities believe Blair was the person who shot White during the robbery. White drove off, but crashed shortly after into a home on Washington Avenue. But Police say he told them “in my phone, she set me up” before he died.

Police recovered 68 grams of marijuana in White’s vehicle.

An investigation revealed Robinson stole the gun used in the shooting, and it belonged to her grandparents.

According to the police reports a Snapchat video also showed Robinson displaying the gun and laughing.

Investigators say Coleman was stopped by Henderson Police in the days following the murder and had six handguns in his possession. HPD seized the guns, but did not arrest Coleman. The guns will be tested to see if any are connected with White’s murder.

Blair, Butts, and Robinson are being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail.

There’s no word the exact charges Coleman will face once he’s booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail.

McCarty Makes Hires To Coaching Staff

University of Evansville head men’s basketball coach Walter McCarty has announced the hiring of two individuals to his first coaching staff with the Purple Aces.

McCarty has tabbed Terrence Commodore as an Assistant Coach while adding Logan Baumann as the Director of Basketball Operations.  The final assistant coach spots will be announced soon.

Commodore comes to Evansville following a 3-year stint at his alma mater – Eastern Kentucky.  He joined the Colonels’ staff as the Video Coordinator/Director of Player Personnel in 2015-16 before spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach.

In his first season on the EKU staff, Commodore helped to develop some of the top talent in the Ohio Valley Conference.  Nick Mayo was a first team All-OVC player for the second season in a row in 2016-17 while he also directed freshman Asante Gist to the OVC All-Newcomer Team that season.

From 2007-11, he worked at the University of Kentucky as a graduate assistant/program assistant.  In his time at UK, the Wildcats made the Elite 8 in 2010 and the Final Four in 2011.  His responsibilities included on-campus recruiting, film breakdown, player development and assisting with scouting reports.  He assisted in the recruiting process of former Wildcat players John Wall, Eric Bledsoe, DeMarcus Cousins, Brandon Knight and Darius Miller.

A 2007 graduate of EKU, Commodore received his bachelor’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration.  He completed his master’s degree in sports leadership from Kentucky in 2011.

“I am excited to add Terrence to our staff; he is a tenacious, exciting young coach,” McCarty said.  “Being from Kentucky and having an extensive background there, he really gives us a good presence in this region.  Terrence is a savvy recruiter; a real go-getter.  He truly loves the game and will be great with our guys.”

Logan Baumann will serve as the Purple Aces Director of Basketball Operations.  He worked on the staff at the University of Louisville for the past three seasons, most recently as the Senior Director of Video Operations.  He started his career as the Assistant Video Coordinator with the Cardinals.

Baumann earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from UofL in 2015 and was a student manager during his college career.  During the Cardinals’ 2013 NCAA Championship season, Baumann transitioned from a manager to a walk on, playing in one game during that year.  He averaged 17.3 points per game in his senior season at Ohio County High School in Hartford, Ky. and was the 2012 Third Region Player of the Year.

“Logan brings a wealth of experience and energy to our program,” McCarty said.  “He is the first one here and the last one to leave each day.  Logan helps us in so many ways and is very well-respected around the industry.  I am very excited about what he brings to the staff.”

10 MUST ASK RULES

I hope you get a kick out of reading Abdul Hakim-Shabazz as I do. His brand of political humor runs through his articles much like the banter talk he would lay on a legislator that happened to get caught with him in the elevator. I don’t think he knew who I was but everyone knew him. 

In his recent article, Abdul offers his 10 Primary Rules including his most “ Don’t talk to me about this” rules. ( https://city-countyobserver.com/commentary-ten-primary-rules/)

He is spot on. But, I still would like to hear candidates’ opinions about the issues that lie beneath the references to President Trump he doesn’t want to hear about and those that affect us every day and aren’t talked about, until some crisis or event takes place or a bill is authored.   I think others would like to hear, too.

For example – 

  1. What leadership qualities in a candidate are important to you
  2. Will you sign an ethics statement and participate in the prevention of sexual harassment training
  3. What comment would you have regarding the importance of the separation of powers in government – executive, legislative, judicial
  4. What is your position on 1st Amendment Rights – please comment on media, including social
  5. What is your position on 2nd Amendment Rights
  6. What is your position on the 14th Amendment Rights
  7. What is your position on Equal Pay for Women
  8. How would you better control government spending 
  9. What is your position on increasing the minimum wage, and
  10. Last, but very important, How would you improve services to our children, including our education system

Those are my 10 Must Ask Rules. I just learned there is the first open meeting for candidates running for Senator Jim Tomes seat. It begins at 9:00 this Saturday at CK Newsome.
