Aces Baseball fall in series finale at Dallas Baptist

0

DALLAS, Tex. – The University of Evansville baseball team couldn’t dodge Dallas Baptist’s brooms, as the Purple Aces fell in their series finale with the Patriots, 7-1, Sunday afternoon at Horner Ballpark.

Freshman right hand pitcher Jace Burke (0-6) got the start for the Aces, and looked sharp early, keeping the potent Dallas Baptist lineup off the scoreboard through the first two innings.

In the third frame, Hill Alexander changed that, leading off the inning with a solo home run to left. giving the Patriots the lead. Burke would proceed to hit a batter, then walk another, putting two aboard. However, the freshman got out of the jam, as senior third baseman Stewart Nelson snagged a hard liner, which was bound for left field, ending the threat. Burke would come back to pitch a scoreless fifth frame, keeping the game tight at 1-0.

In the fifth, the Patriots would finally get to Burke, a they sandwiched a pop-up with a pair of singles, ending the freshman right hander’s day. Senior reliever Ryan Brady would take over from there, however Dallas Baptist continued to swing, as Jimmy Glowenke singled to left driving in one insurance run. Matt Duce would lift a sacrifice fly to left, driving in the second run of the inning, putting Evansville in a 3-0 hole.

Brady would pitch a clean sixth, but ran into trouble in the seventh, issuing back-to-back one out walks. That would lead to another pitching change, as sophomore reliever Nathan Croner entered the game. After striking out the first batter he faced, Croner issued a free pass to load up the bases with two outs. Croner would then walk in one run, then get tagged for a two run single to center by Garrett Wolforth. That would chase Croner from the game, with Dallas Baptist leading 6-0. Senior right hander Jimmy Ward would come out of the bullpen to put out the fire and end the inning.

The UE bats sprung to life in the eighth inning, as junior right fielder Nate Reeder opened the from with a lead off single. Senior catcher Andrew Tanous would follow that up with a single to the gap in left center, then advanced on the throw, putting runner on second and third with no one out. Two batters later Sam Troyer would come up clutch with an RBI single to left, bringing in Reeder. However, that’s where the rally stalled, as senior first baseman lined out to second and Tanous was doubled off at third. The Patriots would get the run back in the bottom of the frame, as the Aces fell 7-1.

“We got a great pitching effort out of Jace Burke”, said University of Evansville Head Coach Wes Carroll. “Unfortunately, we didn’t have the offense all weekend to get the win.”

The loss drops Evansville to 8-33 on the season and 1-14 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while Dallas Baptist improves to 31-15, and 12-3 in the MVC.

The Purple Aces are back in action Tuesday night, when they play host to UT-Martin. First pitch from Charles H. Braun Stadium is at 6 p.m. CT.

Aces fall to Bradley in season finale

Bradley plated two runs in the first inning and held strong from there, defeating the University of Evansville softball team by a 4-2 final on Sunday afternoon in Peoria.

With the loss, the Purple Aces (15-34, 8-18 MVC) complete the season while Bradley finished up the regular season campaign at 20-29 and 9-15 in the Valley.

Morgan Florey went the distance for UE, giving up four runs on four hits while striking out ten.  UE notched six hits on the day with Ashleigh Downing posting two.  Allison Apke had all four runs batted in for BU while Emma Jackson tossed a complete game in the circle.

In the bottom of the first inning, Apke put the Braves on the board with a 2-run home run.  Evansville’s offense was led by Ashleigh Downing, who had the first two hits of the day for the Purple Aces.

UE cut the Bradley lead in half in the top sixth when a McKenzie Johnson single brought home Brittany Hay, who reached on a fielders choice earlier in the frame.  The Braves struck again in the bottom of the 6th when Apke had a 2-RBI double to push the lead to 4-1.

Evansville never gave up as Jaime Nurrenbern came through in the seventh with a pinch hit double.  Eryn Gould brought her home with an RBI hit to make it the final of 4-2.

Morgan Florey finished her junior season with a program record of 303 strikeouts, including 26 last weekend against Southern Illinois, the top total in the NCAA this season.  Brittany Hay completed her senior season with a team-high 27 RBI while Lindsay Renneisen paced UE with 8 home runs.

Fellow freshman Eryn Gould led the offense with a .377 average while scoring a team-high 28 runs in her first collegiate season.

IS IT TRUE MAY 7, 2018

25

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE that all is not lost as Bill Stone and his wife Mary have generously donated $15 Million to the downtown medical education complex?…Stone is the CEO of SS&C Technologies who was raised in Evansville and enjoyed massive financial successes through his entrepreneurial efforts elsewhere?… Stone even gave back to his hometown by making a commitment to hire up to 500 people into good paying jobs in Evansville?…that Evansville is fortunate that this hometown boy has affection for his childhood home and the medical school is now poised to benefit?…there is nothing quite like entrepreneurship when it comes to creating jobs and wealth?…the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville (GAGE) may have been reminded of that recently as they are doing a nationwide search for a Director of Innovation?…some will remember that GAGE was founded 11 years ago to foster entrepreneurship and innovation but lost its way?…the CCO encourages entrepreneurship and hopes to see GAGE find a worthy candidate that has actually been an entrepreneur as opposed to some patronage appointment that simply occupies a stuffed suit?

IS IT TRUE we predict that Mike Braun the “candidate for change” will win the US Senate Republican primary race by a slim margin?

IS IT TRUE  we been told that Anne Ennis is planning to run for a seat on the EVSC School Board? ..if she does she will be running for the seat now occupied by the candidate for the Vanderburgh County Commission Mike Duckworth?

IS IT TRUE we been told that every Republican county officeholder up for re-election will have a Democratic challenger during the November general election?

IS IT TRUE that the TROLLEY OF EVANSVILLE DISTRICTS (TED) last week officially launched its services to area bars and restaurants?  …so far things are going well? …that Amy Word Smith the founder of the Franklin Street Event Association and Andrea Sinnett the President of the FSEA did the majority of the grunt work in order to make this project a reality? … we give them five cheers for a job well done?

IS IT TRUE that at the beginning of May the senior class at all of the local high schools are looking forward to entering the real world shortly after their graduation?…local businesses and publications are turning backflips to congratulate this year’s graduates and encourage them to embark upon the next phase of life after 12 years of life in the educational bubble?…even the highly respected Gannett publications like the Courier and Press and the Henderson Gleaner are getting into the act?..across the money saving bridge there is an editor that approved a congratulatory ad for the 2018 graduating class of Henderson County High School with one very glaring mistake that got through the insanity filters?…the giant ad in the Gleaner on May 6, 2018 praises and congratulates the Henderson County High School Class of 2017?…it may be a good idea for the editor that approved this to join the class of 2019 and take a class in attention to detail?

IS IT TRUE the violent crime wave that seems to have started in Evansville’s 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Wards is spreading into the suburbs?…just the other day shots were fired at a suburban apartment complex on North Green River Road across from the Schnucks?…while this set of apartments on Spring Valley Road has long been a source of petty crime, the firing of shots is something that has not been happening?…this spread of violence to historically non-violent areas does not bode well for the future of greater Evansville?…this is a prime example of why violent crime needs to be curbed at the source as soon as possible?

IS IT TRUE that the violent crime is spreading to other communities in Southwest Indiana too?…a police officer was gunned down in the sleepy town of Terre Haute last week?…a Boonville jury failed to convict a person who essentially admitted to murder due to a technicality and a mistrial was declared?…this of course means that the taxpayers will be paying for another trial due to the failures of a process to yield any legal result at all?

IN SUPPORT OF STEVE HAMMER FOR VANDERBURGH COUNTY COMMISSIONER

11

The race for the County Commissioner in the Republican primary has become very interesting to watch. Oddly enough it isn’t because the candidates vying for this seat are conducting a negative and personal in your face campaign against each other.  In fact, each candidate has been very respectful towards each other. To their credit, they have focused on discussing the issues that affect the citizen of Vanderburgh County. Vanderburgh County Republican party is fortunate to have three quality candidates running for the County Commissioner seat.

We have been told by credible sources that the recently declared Democrat and former Vanderburgh County GOP Party Chairman Jeff Hatfield is poised to announce his candidacy for the Vanderburgh County Commission seat sometime after the primary election is over with. We can guarantee if Mr. Hatfield decides to run for this office he will be one heck of a campaigner and will have an impressive political war chest. Whoever wins the Republican primary race for County Commissioner will have a major challenge to defeat Jeff Hatfield because he is well known and respected by people from both political parties. With that being said the control of the Vanderburgh County Commision lay in the balance and the Vanderburgh County Republicans better get it right by selecting the right candidate to represent them in the upcoming General election.
Recently the Vanderburgh County Republican Party Chairman Wayne Parke took away his support of Republican County Commissioner primary candidate Steve Hammer appointed  Precinct Committeeman position. Mr. Parke alleged that Mr. Hammer made a statement that he has the “endorsement of the Vanderburgh County Republican Party for County Commissioner and the area Chamber of Commerce.”  We were told that a phone bank volunteer incorrectly stated that Mr. Hammer has the “endorsement of the Vanderburgh County Republican Party for County Commissioner and the area Chamber of Commerce.   Candidates Hammer publicly apologize for his volunteer incorrect statement.
We contend that Mr. Parkes withdrawal of support will not hurt Mr. Hammers at all. In the past, Mr. Parke has endorsed candidates in caucuses and primaries who ran against other Republicans and lost. This isn’t the first time that Mr. Parke had a falling out with candidates or elected officials of his own party. He had issues with past GOP Chairman Nick Hermann, County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave, past County Commissioner candidate Sean Selby, Councilman Dan McGinn, County Councilman James Raben, County Councilman Joe Kiefer and numerous other office holders.
Mr. Hammer made a statement to the Evansville Courier and Press that really caught our attention. He said that;”I’m not a politician. I do not partake in dirty political tricks, closed-door gossiping or middle school-level backstabbing. I did not get into this race to play political games. Make no mistake: Mr. Parkes tactics will not stop me from delivering my message of economic growth, local conservative values, and dedication to The People — not the party. I believe in the integrity of public service, and I hope to serve this community honestly and honorably.”
For the last several months we have been closely watching the campaign styles of all three Republican primary candidates running in the Vanderburgh County Commission race. It looks like that the Vanderburgh County Republican party may have an up and coming political star in the making. Steve Hammer has proven to be is an effective campaigner. He has put together an impressive campaign committee that comprised of many well-known movers and shakers from our community. He has good people and communications skills.  His finance committee has done an impressive job in raising money for his campaign. Mr. Hammers door-to-door campaign has been impressive. If you follow him on social media you will wonder if he ever sleeps since he virtually attends every community event possible.
We like that Steve Hammer is extremely conservative, a successful businessman, a man of faith and is a good family man.  We respectfully recommend that you consider casting your vote for Steve Hammer as the Republican nominee for the County Commission in the May 8, 2018, primary election. We believe that Republican Steve Hammer is the best person to take on the soon to be announced Democratic opponent in the November general election.

A Call to Congressional Candidates!

A Call to Congressional Candidates!

by Gail Riecken, CCO State House Editor

Michael Leppert in his StatehouseFile article on Sixth District US Congress candidate Greg Pence slams Mr. Pence for not being up for his race. Among the issues Leppert cites is Pence’s total reliance on the name of his famous brother.
http://thestatehousefile.com/commentary-name-greg-pence-not-ballot/35523/

Name recognition is a big asset, but really, shouldn’t it be for something more than your family.

At the same time, I read Leppert’s article, I also read an article how President Trump is promising Michiganders he’ll prioritize needed waterway improvements on the St. Lawrence Seaway.
https://www.maritime-executive.com/article/trump-wants-to-fix-pinch-point-for-great-lakes-shipping#gs.SRSG8X0

So, I say, if any Congressional or State legislative candidate, for that matter, wants to do something really big, something that gains him/her “kitchen table” name recognition, that person should advocate with the President and, yes, the Vice-President, that southern Indiana and the Ohio River locks and dams need just as much attention as the St Lawrence Seaway.

For years the Corps of Engineers has been trying to get more money for the dams on the Ohio River. (One construction project, that some feel was poorly designed, has sucked up all the monies and seems to stall the argument for improvements on other locks and dams.) What has remained is a policy of basic maintenance, only, for the other dams.

To quote the Corps of Engineers, “ Within five years, over half of the current navigation structures will be past their structural design life.” The Corps considers “the modernization of the Ohio River system a top local, regional, national priority”.
http://www.lrd.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Navigation/Ohio-River/

As a matter of fact, I don’t see how one can prioritize the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence Seaway over the Ohio River.  The Ohio River carries over 220 million tons of freight (year 2010). Both the Seaway and Ohio are integral parts of the economic health of our country.
http://midamericafreight.org/rfs/network-inventory/waterways/top-commodities-by-waterway/

How could candidates do something worthwhile to earn name recognition?  Pledge support and advocacy for improvements along with one or more of the compacts of the 6 states bordering the Ohio River; visit the Corps and solicit their help and advocacy; travel to the state legislator and national legislator conferences and lobby targeted Electeds,(Canada used to be active for the St Lawrence Seaway at these conferences and probably still is); and visit Governor Holcomb and secure his active support.

Backing a candidate for office should be more about the actions that a candidate takes to benefit our area and less about who his/her brother or father is or the fact the candidate looks good in public. Those attributes haven’t won us a seat at the allocation table for what we need on Ohio. How about asking a candidate to take a stand and tell us what he/she will do for southern Indiana and the Ohio River.

EPD SWAT CHALLENGE BONDS THE COMMUNITY WITH OFFICERS

0
The weather cooperated for the 4th annual Evansville Police Department Swat Challenge held in Downtown Evansville Saturday morning.

People of all ages participated in the fun, challenging 5K, with different obstacles, like climbing walls and jumping over cars. The Swat Challenge provides a way for the community to get together with the men and women who keep us save 24-7.

Officers like Kenny Dutschke were left in awe of the outpouring of support from the community. “This is our biggest even so far, this morning we had over 400 people registered to come out and support us in here in the community and it feels awesome.”

From 8 to Noon waves of 30 to 50 people ran in the course. No one is too small or old to be involved in the Swat Challenge, which offers a variety of obstacles. Participant Cameron Ellison said, “Climbing a wall where you had to climb up the side of a parking garage, swimming through a dumpster, going under little tunnels, jumping over hurdles, jumping over cars, I think that banged up my knees a bit but it was pretty fun.”

There was no quitting, EPD Officers were on hand to provide encouragement throughout the course. Ellison said, “Oh it felt really great, at each different event having the officers there cheering you on, it really encouraged me to push forward through it so I think that’s what gave me the motivation to finish.
