TRISTATE FIRST RESPONDERS HONORED BY DEACONESS FOUNDATION, HEARTSAVER + THE DIAMOND GALLERIA

The Diamond Galleria has partnered with HeartSaver, a program of the Heart Hospital at Deaconess Gateway to provide life-saving automated external defibrillators AEDs to the Tristate First Responders. Individuals driving along Evansville’s Burkhardt Road this month will notice emergency vehicles along with “Tristate First Responders Month” signs at The Diamond Galleria.

On July 19th, The Diamond Galleria and its owners, Bert and Tyna Wheat, will host a special event in the store to highlight the program. Sheriff Wedding, Police Chief Billy Boling, and Fire Chief Connelly will be present along with the HeartSaver committee members and members of the Deaconess Foundation. Food and beverages will be available, and a small ceremony will take place.

The public is invited. “Brave men and women right here in our community so often go above and beyond the call in helping others. We want to celebrate all they do for our community,” says Bert Wheat.

The Diamond Galleria has set aside the entire month of July to recognize the incredible work and bravery each first responder performs each and every day. Giving back to the community is one of the core values of The Diamond Galleria. A portion of sales all month long will be donated to the HeartSaver program to provide lifesaving AEDs for the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Department, Evansville Police Department and Evansville Fire Department to be placed in police and sheriff vehicles. And, first responders have received a voucher on behalf of The Diamond Galleria to be used during the month of July. “We’ve partnered with many local charities, but we are particularly proud of this project. This will literally save lives right here at home,” says Bert Wheat.

The Diamond Galleria has previously raised funds to place 6 AEDs locally. The HeartSaver organization has placed over 200 AEDs and The Diamond Galleria’s focus with this event is for First Responders in the Tri-State and surrounding areas.

The celebration event will be held at The Diamond Galleria and will begin at 5:30 PM. The Diamond Galleria invites the public to join.

New Harmony Theatre season continues with Nunsense

The 2018 New Harmony Theatre season will continue with Nunsense, the second longest running Off-Broadway show in history, July 19-22. USI to exhibit works by Stephen Pace to celebrate Art Center anniversary

Stephen Pace: An Artist’s Process, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the University of Southern Indiana McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries, will be on display through Monday, September 10 at the Art Center.  Stephen Pace (1918 – 2010) was an internationally recognized abstract expressionist and figurative painter.  Pace, along with his wife Palmina, was instrumental in the completion of the Art Center galleries, which opened to the public on September 7, 2008. This exhibition displays the series of related drawings, prints, paintings, and/or woodcut plates together to give the viewer deeper insight into Pace’s artistic process. The exhibition also provides a timeline reflecting the influences that determined the trajectory of Pace’s career and the development of his distinctive artistic style. Read More

Early registration deadline nears for Mid-America Institute on Aging and Wellness

The University of Southern Indiana and SWIRCA and More, the local agency on aging, will present the 11th annual Mid-America Institute on Aging and Wellness (MAIA) on the USI campus on August 9 and 10, with a pre-conference workshop on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care scheduled for August 8. The conference this year will feature four public keynote speakers: Teepa Snow, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA; Ashton Applewhite; Jeff Speck, AICP, CNU-A, LEED-AP; and Bill Thomas, MD. The deadline for a reduced registration fee is Friday, July 27. After that date, the rate increases for the pre-conference workshop and one- and two-day registrations. 2018 USI Doggie Dash Dog Walk and Run

Registration is now open for the 2018 University of Southern Indiana Doggie Dash to be held on Saturday, September 29. This event allows whole families (including the four-legged children) an opportunity to walk and run on the beautiful University of Southern Indiana campus. Registration for the 3K and 5K runs is $25 for individuals or $20 for members of a team, and free for youth ages 10 and under. A portion of the proceeds from the Doggie Dash will be used to offer to the programme and provide professional development opportunities for student clubs within USI’s Pott College. Registration now open for the 17th annual Norwegian Foot March

Registration is now open for the 17th annual University of Southern Indiana Norwegian Foot March on Saturday, November 3. The march, an intense mental and physical challenge, will take participants 18.6 miles through the rolling hills of Evansville’s west side. Carrying a 25-pound rucksack, participants will begin and end on the USI campus, working to make it back to the finish line in under four and a half hours. ROTC cadets, soldiers and veterans, as well as civilians, may register individually or as part of a four-member team. Registration can be completed online or by calling USI Outreach and Engagement at 812-464-1989. Early registration is recommended, as the event sells out quickly. ROTC cadets from any school can register for $25 and all other participants can register for $45. Registration will close on October 15 or when the event is full at 500 participants. The Norwegian Foot March is sponsored by USI’s Student Veteran Association. Proceeds from the foot march enhance the training of the students in the USI ROTC Program. Rolling Hills Country Club Wins County Club Championship

Oak Meadow country club, Tri-State Athletic Club, Rolling Hills Bounty club, Evansville Country Club, and Western Hills Country Club all competed for a title yesterday. It was a very hot and long day, and all of the teams gave all of their might trying to swim towards a championship. The Oak Meadow Otters hosted the championships this year. We’d like to thank Oak Meadow for hosting such a great meet.

Lyle Snyder (age 5) swam a great freestyle event. Brody Drake (age 5) swam a very great backstroke. James Dus (age 5) made constant improvements throughout the season and did a great freestyle. We’d like to congratulate all of the swimmers and their coaches for such a great season.

Western Hills country club got fifth place, with 293 points. Tri-State Athletic Club got fourth place with 478 points. Oak Meadow Country Club got third place with 1,686.50 points. Evansville Country Club got second place with 2,360.50 points. Rolling Hills Country Club got first place, capturing the championship, with 2,426 points.

Country Commissioner Ben Shoulders and General Manager of the Miami Marlins Don Mattingly were in attendance.

“It’s been 12 years, and I just turned 71. My wife and my two kids and my nine grandkids for years have asked me to slow down. I think it’s time. I’ve enjoyed working with Saratoga over the years.
“It’s been a really fun and fast-moving 12 years. I feel like we’ve had some great successes and we’ve brought it a long way with so many people’s help. I know Saratoga will be focused on continuing the progress.”
(Note: This year Ellis Park is offering a record $230,000 a day in purses, made possible in part because of a strategic relationship with Kentucky Downs, in which the Kentucky HBPA facilitated the transfer of $2.9 million in purses from Kentucky Downs to Ellis Park to bolster purses and encourage horsemen to stay in Kentucky for the summer.)
Geary said he is pleased that SCHG has indicated that current staff management, headed by general manager Jeff Hall, will stay intact. “That’s what I recommended,” he said. “This is going to be one of the best operating years in our history, especially if we ever get a break with the weather, and I just think it will get better and better.”
According to the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, Ellis Park’s Historical Horse Racing operation was up 10 percent for the recently concluded fiscal year over the prior year. HHR is up 40 percent the past three months over the corresponding three months in 2017, the commission said.
Geary teamed with Saratoga Casino and Hospitality Group in 2012, giving them a 30-percent stake in the track in exchange for $4 million, which was used to launch Historical Horse Racing at Ellis Park.
“Back in 2011, I was trying to figure out what it took to get Ellis into the black and make it profitable. I decided I had to invest in Instant Racing, called Historical Horse Racing now. I took a whole year and visited 44 different racetracks, casinos, racinos and met a bunch of people and talked to them that I would like to bring in a 20 to 30-percent partner to help me launch Instant Racing. Seven groups of people were interested. One of the last groups I met with was Saratoga, and there was kind of a bond immediately. We always got along great. We always dealt with each other with openness and candor. They are a very dependable group of people, ones you can trust. I went with them. They put up $4 million to get the original Instant Racing open in the clubhouse, and we’ve been working together ever since. They are good people.”

Otters To Have German Heritage Night Thursday, July 19

Celebrating Evansville’s German heritage and history, the Evansville Otters will have German Heritage Night Thursday, July 19 at Bosse Field.
The night will include German music and specialty menu items.
The Evansville Otters are partnering with Germania Maennerchor of Evansville for special musical performances at Bosse Field, featuring the Rhein Valley Brass Band, Germania Maennerchor Choir and Alpha Horns.
Returning from last year’s German Heritage Night menu will be Kraut Balls.
Last season’s German Heritage Night saw 3,524 fans fill the stands.
As the series finale against the Lake Erie Crushers, Thursday, July 19 is also a Thirsty Thursday presented by Working Distributors.
For Thirsty Thursday, fans can purchase select beers and drafts at special prices at the ballpark.
First pitch from Bosse Field is set for 6:35 p.m. with gates opening an hour before gametime.

The Evansville Otters will host Princess Night this Saturday, July 21 as part of their series against the Windy City Thunderbolts.
The Evansville Otters cordially invite fans to attend Princess Night, sponsored by Junior Achievement of SW Indiana and Lil Bit Sassy Children’s Boutique.
Fans can enjoy a night of Evansville Otters baseball at Bosse Field with some of their favorite princess characters.
Bosse Field will be transformed and all princes and princesses in attendance will have the opportunity to take photos and receive autographs from their favorite princess characters in attendance.
Kids are invited to wear princess costumes to join in on the fun and can also participate in a costume contest and an on-field parade.
All guests in costumes will need to meet in the left-field picnic area by 6:10 p.m. Saturday with the costume parade to follow.
Also, the first 100 princesses in costume will receive a free popcorn.
After the game, fans can stick around to enjoy a dazzling firework show.

USI’s TCA Final Pitch Event Set For August 10

Teams of students participating in the University of Southern Indiana’s Technology Commercialization Academy (TCA) will present their final product pitches from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, August 10 in the USI Griffin Center. The final pitch event is open to the public as TCA students will present to USI faculty and staff, local business leaders and regional entrepreneurs.

Each team’s pitch is a result of the 12-week program that focuses on a process known as design thinking. Students developed their ventures or product ideas throughout three work phases: skill development, entrepreneurs’ mindset and practical application/client work.

This year, TCA students explored the transfer of military-developed technologies to businesses in southwest Indiana, while working closely with Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division (NSWC Crane). Early in the program, TCA students visited the naval base to learn about commercial opportunities generated from NSWC Crane intellectual property. To come full circle in the program, students will take a second trip to pitch their final concepts to Crane officials on Monday, August 6.

“At first, I was a little unsure about what I could bring to the program because I’m an advertising major,” said Blake Watson, TCA participant. “A majority of the other interns are engineering majors, but I feel like we all bring different skills and abilities to the program and we all work well together.”

TCA’s end goal is to develop innovative leaders, while improving economic development in the area. With success in the program, students will demonstrate initiative, evidence-based decision making, multidisciplinary collaboration and professional accountability.

At the end of the pitch event, audience members will have the opportunity to meet the teams and ask in-depth questions to learn more about their experience and projects. This discussion will benefit the students and their ability to accept feedback and apply that to their experience through TCA.

Students will have the opportunity to continue working on their products through USI programs such as the Eagle Innovation Accelerator and BIZCOM, during the academic year.

REP. ROKITA CHAIRS HEARING ON SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAMS

Congressman Todd Rokita, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, released the following statement after chairing a hearing on Examining the Summer Food Service Program:

“I believe that our focus should be on helping those who truly need this program, with a goal to make the need for government assistance temporary,” said Congressman Todd Rokita. “We shouldn’t be in the business of giving out free meals to families who have or should have the resources to provide for their kids. Additionally, it is incumbent upon policy makers to identify other places where resources are not well spent, and use those to fund top priorities, like the Summer Food Service Program.”
