“READERS FORUM” MAY 6, 2018

10

We hope that today’s “Readers Forum” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

HERE IS WHATS ON OUR MIND TODAY?

In the private sector when a person is accused of illegally taking funds from an existing business to pay personal debts, your arrested for misappropriation of funds.

In Evansville when a person is working at a non-profit business and is accused of illegally taking funds from an existing non-profit business to pay personal debts you’re let go and the former employer wishes you well.

WHATS ON YOUR MIND TODAY?

Todays “Readers Poll” question is: Are you planning to vote in the upcoming Republican primary?

Commentary: By Any Other Name, Greg Pence Would Not Be On The Ballot

0

By Michael Leppert
www.MichaelLeppert.com

I started paying attention to the Greg Pence for Congress campaign a little this week.  It didn’t take me long.  There isn’t much there.

Let’s not get too far into this without stating the obvious.  There is no reason to believe that Greg Pence would even be running for Congress if Vice President Mike Pence was not his younger brother.

Pretend for a moment his name was John Smith.  He would be struggling to introduce himself to voters just like any other candidate.  What he is doing would not be working.  At all.

Seth Slabaugh, of the Star Press, did an in-depth piece on the lesser known Pence’s campaign last weekend. This is an important article detailing a campaign that seems to be avoiding the tedious nature of actual campaigning.

So what is Greg Pence’s personal brand?

He served honorably for four years in the United States Marine Corps.  As far as I can tell, we should express nothing but gratitude for this service.  This is the type of experience that has historically proven invaluable in politics. U.S. Senator Todd Young’s successful 2016 campaign comes to mind.  Sen. Young started most sentences with “as a Marine,” two years ago. It worked.

In Pence’s case, he is using the tagline of “ready to serve again.”

He now owns a couple of antique malls. This part of his business background is detailed by Simone Pathe in an April 18 article in Roll Call. There is nothing impressive or out of the ordinary about it really.

In between the military and the antique malls though, he worked for Marathon Oil and Unocal Corporation, and then became the president of Kiel Brothers Oil Company.  This was the family’s gas station and convenience store business that filed for bankruptcy in 2004, which immediately preceded Pence’s resignation.

The following year, he worked for two and half months at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.  That job experience is clouded by his oddly brief stay and by the $8.4 million in penalties that the family business owed IDEM primarily for leaking underground storage tanks.

Michael Tacket expands on the IDEM issue in the New York Times on April 22.  Like the Star Press and Roll Call stories, all primary voters in the Sixth Congressional district should read it.  Tacket, an Anderson native and Indiana University graduate, reports on the trouble Pence had at the family business and as a member of local bank board as well.

The stories by these three reporters are connected to one another by at least one common theme: that Pence is strategically not available to the media.  Admittedly, not showing up for an opportunity to meet with a reporter from Roll Call, even when that reporter is at the candidate’s place of business, will not likely have any impact on the primary election.  Likewise, neither will turning down an interview with what campaign spokesperson Kyle Robertson refers to as “the failing New York Times.”

I seriously doubt there is a critical mass of voters in the district who read either publication.

But not talking to the Star Press, based in Muncie, Indiana, in this context seems like a big deal to me. Do voters in Indiana’s Sixth read that one?

This is evidence of far more than a “front runner strategy” taken to the extreme.  Some of this tells a tale of what kind of congressman these voters should expect if he wins.

Robertson points to a series of weekly videos that Pence has been sharing. He describes these videos as “interviews” with award winning radio broadcaster Greg Garrison.  Garrison is a conservative talk radio host, and the videos are all about a minute in length and seem more like ads than interviews.

Greg Pence is running as Mike Pence’s brother.  He is a 61-year-old first time candidate who would not be running otherwise.

Like the three GOP candidates for Indiana’s U.S. Senate nomination, Pence wants the people who voted for his brother’s ticket in 2016 just to vote the same way. In his case, he doesn’t have to work at showing voters he is part of the Trump-Pence team.  For this candidate, it really is in his blood.

His campaign is almost entirely based on name ID.  Whatever energy is leftover, he uses on avoiding saying the wrong thing.  He does this by trying not to say anything at all.

There are other candidates running in the district on Tuesday, most notably Jonathan Lamb.  I hope I am surprised on Tuesday by an electorate that can see through Pence’s charade of a campaign. The district, the state and country can all do better.

DR. RICHARD MOSS ANNOUNCE HIS CONTRACT WITH INDIANA’S 8TH DISTRICT AND AMERICA

3

My Contract With Indiana’s 8th District – and America

Where’s Larry, the Anti-Trump?

By Richard Moss, MD Candidate for Congress, Republican Party, 8TH Congressional District, Indiana

Jasper, IN: Congressman Bucshon has been campaigning as if he is the greatest Trumper the world has ever known, citing some absurd factoid about being in agreement with the President “98.6%” of the time, coincidentally normal body temperature. But Bucshon is no Pro-Trumper, he is the anti-Trump.  On the issue of the day, which is immigration, he showed himself to be the opposite of Trump by endorsing “Gang of 8” amnesty-Rubio during the Republican Presidential Primary. He called Trump’s executive order to ban Muslims from dangerous countries “divisive” and “unfortunate.”  He is a Never-Trumper trying to rebrand himself as a pro-Trumper.  But he is no such thing.

But this is what happens when you stand for nothing and don’t even know what you believe. He is not steeped in the issues and gets his cues from the GOP establishment, arguably the worse possible source.  He is, like the GOP, status quo, a big government, big spending liberal progressive Republican pretending to be a conservative.  It is not for nothing he has a Heritage Action Conservative Score of 52%, an F.  It’s not for nothing he votes every year for some massive Omnibus Bill that funds Democrat priorities like sanctuary cities, amnesty, DACA, and Planned Parenthood.  He ducked his debate with me, refusing to defend his record.  Finally and perhaps most telling, he has moved to DC, a swamp creature if ever there was one.  It is time to drain the swamp beginning right here in Indiana’s 8th district.  It is time to repeal and replace Larry Bucshon.

In the context of Larry’s wavering and posturing, I present my Contract with Indiana’s 8th District and America.  Here is my ten-point platform on the critical issues of the day. You will know where I stand, and I will not waver or posture regardless of political headwinds.  It is time for a change.

My 10 Point Contract With Indiana’s 8th Congressional District and America

1. America First Immigration Reform.

2. Balanced budget. Cut spending, taxes, regulations. Reduce the size of government.

3. Repeal Obamacare. Support Free Market Healthcare Reform.

4. Rein in the Federal Courts.  End government by judicial fiat.

5. Fight the Opioid Crisis By Securing the Southern Border, ending DACA, “catch and release,” and the corrupt and abused “asylum” and “refugee” system. Deport Illegal alien criminals, drug dealers, and gangs like MS 13 that are overrunning our cities and towns and importing illicit heroin, fentanyl, Meth, and Cocaine from Mexico that is killing tens of thousands of Americans every year.

6. End the War on Fossil Fuels and Nuclear: Confront the pseudoscience known as Global Warming/Climate Change.  Make American the dominant energy power in the world.  Refocus the EPA on real pollutants not CO2.

7. Education Reform: First Amendment Protection on College Campus, Code of Ethics, End political indoctrination in schools and colleges. Lower costs through competition and choice.  Privatize loans. Two-tiered educational system (K-12), college bound and career training. Promote School Choice.

8. Defend the Second Amendment. Crime Control Not Gun Control. Concealed Carry National Reciprocity

9. Restore traditional values, culture, morality, faith, and the two-parent intact married family as the model for society. Promote Life.  Defend the Judeo-Christian tradition and Western Civilization. Oppose the transgendering of our military, schools, and bathrooms.

10. International: America First Foreign Policy: Unchallengeable Military Deterrent. Peace Through Strength.

So what is Bucshon’s position on the issues? You would never know. He never says. After all, he has 90% name ID, as he said in defense of his decision not to debate me. These are the issues I would fight for on behalf of Indiana’s 8th district and the nation.

William and Mary Stone Give $15 million Toward Multi-Institutional Collaboration; Downtown Facility Renamed The Stone Family Center For Health Sciences

0

The rising Health Sciences Center in downtown Evansville, a collaboration of the University of Evansville, the University of Southern Indiana, and Indiana University, has received a $15 million gift from William and Mary Stone to officially name the facility the Stone Family Center for Health Sciences.

“This gift is transformational for our health sciences programs,” said University of Evansville president Tom Kazee. “Not only will it contribute directly to UE’s physical therapy and physician assistant programs housed at the facility, but the effects of the Stone family’s generosity will be felt by all health science students at the University of Evansville.”

Through this gift, each University partner will develop and sustain world-class health education programs that will benefit Evansville and the southwestern Indiana region.

“Bill and Mary Stone have made a transformational gift not only to the new center for health sciences but to the city of Evansville and the region,” said USI president Linda L.M. Bennett. “All three universities have dreams about the collaborative potential of the space downtown, and now this gift will help us to bring those dreams to life. On behalf of the University of Southern Indiana, I thank the Stones for their generosity and commitment to their hometown of Evansville.”

All monies from the gift will be used to support the respective health sciences programs developed and implemented in the center by the three partner institutions.

“With this magnificent gift to support our collective vision, Bill and Mary Stone are doing much more than adding their name to a building. They are helping to create a healthier, more vibrant community and leaving an indelible imprint on Evansville and the families who call the city and surrounding area home,” said IU President Michael A. McRobbie.

“Indiana University is committed to fostering continued excellence in health sciences education and research, advancing health- and medicine-related opportunities for students and collaborating with our partners at the University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana to transform the future of healthcare in the region,” he added.

(SS&C) in 1986 and has remained Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer since inception. SS&C has a large Evansville office and has 22,500 employees located in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

“We remain committed to our hometown,” said Bill Stone. “Evansville is where Mary and I grew up and where we have extended family and friends. SS&C has a large and growing office here, and we look forward to helping this community grow in size, wealth and health. The health center is one key to unlocking the capabilities of Southwestern Indiana.”

Much Mulch by Jim Redwine

GAVEL GAMUT By Jim Redwine

MUCHO MULCH

Ah, spring! The hummingbirds have returned to JPeg Ranch and the falling locust tree blossoms can make me forget for a while how the thorns attack me each time I must deal with a fallen branch. The air is filled with perfume and a symphony of avian love songs.

Of course, it is not called spring for anything and the Equinox strikes deeply into Peg’s cortex causing her to spring into a frenzy of projects around the Ranch. Unfortunately for me, Peg’s projects become my sentence.

Then there is Peg’s deeply held belief we should contribute to virtually every cause that advances the beauty of Posey County, especially New Harmony. The confluence of her obsessions of yard improvement and public service converged when our friend Barb McConnell, who is a hardworking member of the New Harmony Garden Club, mentioned to Peg that the club was selling bags of mulch as a fundraiser.

Now, New Harmony is our home and we care about it. My affection for our small village is best expressed by patronizing Sara and David Brown’s Coffee and Wine Shop, David and Vicki Campbell and Sara and David Brown’s microbrewery, Kenny and Nancy Weinzapfel’s Yellow Tavern and the Owen family’s Red Geranium Restaurant. My position is I spend money on a good meal and/or a good glass of red wine, then I have well met my duty to improve our community. With Peg that’s not quite enough. Therefore, Peg bought 120 (you did not misread that figure) of brown mulch from Barb and the Garden Club.

When Peg gave me the good news my first thought was, “Okay, you bought the mulch, you just want to lift, move, open and spread every last 50-pound bag of it.” Gee, how could I have ever had such a fleeting dream? Oh, no, Peg demanded that I have the pleasure of spending an entire weekend frolicking in the yard with enough mulch to recreate the Old Plank Road between New Harmony and Mt. Vernon.

We put mulch on every possible tree, shrub, flower bed and mole hole within sight. The leftover was used to get ready for our grandson’s wedding to be held at the Ranch this month. I bit my tongue when the thought arose, “Does the happy couple really want to stand on a 3-foot high pile of mulch to take their vows?”

Winkerbell – Winkerbell is a 12-year-old female dilute calico. Look at her adorable chubby cheeks! Like many senior cats, she really does not do well in the shelter environment. After being used to a home, the shelter is really loud, and in a free-roaming cat environment she got pretty nervous, lost her appetite, and lost weight rapidly. She really needs a loving home with not a whole lot of activity (older kids would be fine) so she can thrive in her golden years! Her adoption fee is $40 and includes her spay, microchip, vaccines, and more. Contact Vanderburgh Humane at (812) 426-2563 for adoption details!
