Indiana Is Cracking Down On Drug Interdiction Across The State

Attorney General Curtis Hill is determined to strengthen drug interdiction efforts across Indiana.

A collaboration with the Indiana Drug Enforcement Association (IDEA) will provide the funding needed for regional interdiction teams.

IDEA and highway interdiction teams (HITs) are comprised of officers and drug-sniffing dogs that are cracking down on criminals in Indiana who use the states thoroughfares to do their business.

Attorney General Hill said; “We need to fight the drug crisis on many fronts, including prevention and treatment.  “By increasing interdiction, we are both reducing the number of illicit drugs flowing into our communities and simultaneously sending a strong message to those who choose the Crossroads of America to carry out criminal activity: You will pay a heavy price for trafficking drugs in Indiana. Officers and deputies are out in force looking for you every day.”

West Lafayette Police Chief Jason Dombkowski agrees with Hill, saying that he knows the efforts made by these teams are making a difference.

All in the month of April, HITs conducted 273 drug-related investigations. These investigations led to 16 arrests, 12 pounds of marijuana seized, and a pound of methamphetamine seized. Pills and cocaine with a street value of more than $65,000 as well as a handgun and $16,000 cash were among other items that were confiscated.

So far, eight police cars and five police K-9s have been purchased for agencies to use. Also purchased were tracking software, two-way radios and emergency police equipment such as lights and sirens.

Otters Spoil Slammers’ Home Opener With 6-3 win

0

The Evansville Otters spoiled the Joliet Slammers’ home opener Tuesday night, besting their opponent with a 6-3 win from Joliet Route 66 Stadium.

For the fourth straight game to start the season, Evansville scored the game’s first run against their opponent.

The Otters got on the board in the top of the first inning when Zach Welz lined a ball just inside the left field foul pole for his first home run of the year, giving Evansville a 1-0 lead.

Joliet would respond immediately in the bottom half of the inning. After a leadoff single and an Evansville error, Travis Bolin scored on a sac fly by Justin Garcia to tie the game 1-1.

In the third, the teams would trade one run a piece.

The Otters scored on a Jeff Gardner sac fly and Joliet countered with a run off a throwing error by Otters’ starting pitcher Austin Nicely.

Evansville jumped back in front 3-2 in the top of the fourth off a solo home run from Caleb Eldridge, his second of the season.

Joliet proceeded to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball that scored Chaz Meadows.

The Otters claimed the lead for good in the top of the sixth as Eldridge laced an RBI single to center, moving the Otters ahead by a score of 4-3.

Toby Thomas tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, grounding a two-run single past a drawn-in infield to put the Otters up 6-3.

Offensively, Eldridge finished 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs while Thomas went 2 for 5 with two RBIs.

Evansville’s Mitchell Aker capped off four scoreless innings of relief by the Otters’ bullpen, setting the Slammers down in order in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.

Nicely went five innings in the start for the Otters as he earned his first win of the season. Nicely struck out five while allowing three runs en route to the victory.

Duke Von Schamann was saddled with the loss for Joliet after throwing 5.2 innings pitched and getting tagged for four runs.

With the win, the Otters get back to .500 on the season at 2-2 while the Slammers remain winless at 0-4.

The two teams will play game two of the three game series tomorrow morning at 10:05 a.m. from Joliet Route 66 Stadium in Joliet, Ill.

Game coverage will be available on WUEV 91.5 FM and online at wuev.org with Sam Jellinek (play-by-play) on the call.

Fans can also follow Otters social media on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for game updates throughout the day.

The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions. Season tickets, group outing packages, and single game tickets are on sale now for the 2018 season.

Braun to Senate: Do Your Job or No Vacation

0
Zionsville, IN – Businessman and political outsider Mike Braun today released the following statement on upcoming negotiations over a government funding bill. Recently, President Trump urged the United States Senate to finish work on an upcoming appropriations bill or skip the upcoming August recess:
“Regular Hoosiers don’t get long vacations when they don’t do their jobs, and neither should Senators. I’ve never understood why elected officials seem to reward themselves with so many breaks when they accomplish so little,” said Mike Braun.“Instead of going home, Senate Democrats like Joe Donnelly should stop their mindless obstruction and finish the work they were elected to do.”
