Tri-State Alliance Loses Non Profit Status

SEPTEMBER 14TH, 2018 MITCH ANGLE EVANSVILLE, INDIANA

The Tri-State Alliance has had its nonprofit status revoked.

This information comes from the IRS website where it states the organization did not file a Form 990 for Fiscal Year 2014 through 2015.

According to the IRS website, the revocation went into effect in May 2017, but the organization received a formal notice in February 2018.

IRS states that Form 990 will be automatically revoked for three straight years.

Earlier this month, board director Kelly Course resigned. His reasoning was that “there might be a potential misuse of resources within the organization.”

Evansville Police have confirmed there is no active investigation at this time.

CROSS EXAMINATION, THE ENGINE OF TRUTH

Freedom of Speech is a good thing. That includes the “right” to lie and disparage anonymously. Cross examination is recognized in legal matters as the greatest engine of truth. It is just as much a Constitutional Right as Freedom of Speech. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution protects one’s right to speak and the Sixth Amendment protects the right to “confront one’s accusers”, i.e. to cross examine them, in criminal cases. Indiana’s Constitution guarantees both Freedom of Speech and “Face to Face” cross examination. It is clear that those who founded both our state and our country considered both rights sacred.

However, as with much of life and law, the devil is in the details when particular situations that implicate conflicting Constitutional Rights must be addressed. If CNN and MSNBC want to proclaim President Trump a pariah while FOX News proclaims him a messiah both positions are constitutionally protected even if they might cite to anonymous sources to do so. So, how do those who disagree with either position exercise the right of cross-examination? Well, they don’t. Private citizens and non-governmental entities are perfectly within their rights to cite or even make up anonymous sources.

When the government wants to use Confidential Informants in criminal cases to seek an arrest or search warrant, the police officer or Prosecuting Attorney must, under oath, set forth facts whereby the reviewing Judge or Magistrate can determine a C.I.’s information is credible. Such things as the ability and opportunity to observe are essential considerations. And, even if the Judge grants the request for a warrant when a case is filed the Court has the authority to order the disclosure of a C.I.’s identity so that a person who is charged may cross-examine the C.I. or have the case thrown out.

This protection of the truth is not available in the civil area nor should it be. If a media outlet wants to lie or make up sources the outlet might be sued but the government should not be allowed to squelch free speech. On the other hand, those of us who are inundated with a constant barrage of personal invective described by the media as “news” owe it to ourselves and our country to demand that news organizations disclose “anonymous sources” or, at least thoroughly vet them and set out the vetting process along with the source’s bona fides so we can judge for ourselves.

Cardinal Classic Up Next For Women’s Golf

Early next week, the University of Evansville women’s golf team will be back on the course as they will take part in the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State.

Set for The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind., the tournament consists of 54 holes with a par of 72 and yardage slated for 6,204.  On Monday, 36 holes will commence with an 8:30 a.m. ET shotgun start.  The final 18 holes on Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m. ET.

A total of 16 teams will be competing including Ball State, Bowling Green, Bradley, Central Michigan, Cleveland State, Dayton, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Ohio University, Purdue Fort Wayne, Southern Illinois, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UIndy, Western Illinois, Western Michigan along with individuals from Indiana University.

The Purple Aces opened the 2018-19 season last week at the Redbird Invitational in Normal, Ill.  Sydney Anderson, a senior transfer from Ball State, paced the team as she earned a 14th place finish.  Her founds finished at 76, 76 and 75 as she completed play at +11.

Sophia Rohleder was next up for UE, tying for 31st at 19-over par.  Her top round was a 76.  Madison Chaney shot a pair of 81’s in the opening day before carding a 77 in the final round to finish in a tie for 43rd.

Evansville tied for 9th in the team standings, just three behind 8th place.

 

Governor Eric Holcomb Directs Flags To Be Flown at Half-Staff

Governor Eric J. Holcomb is directing flags in Allen County to be flown at half-staff to honor Fort Wayne Police Officer David A. Tinsley.

Flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on the day of his funeral, Monday, September 17, 2018.

Gov. Holcomb also asks businesses and residents in Allen County to lower their flags to half-staff on Monday to honor Officer Tinsley and his service to the community.

 

The Olde Tyme Auto Club To Celebrate 65th Anniversary

            Dwight Eisenhower was president, the Yankees were world champs, and “I Love Lucy” was the top show on television. Gasoline cost 20 cents a gallon; a new Ford could be had for $1,537. And a small group of antique car enthusiasts gathered in downtown Evansville to form a new club. The year was 1953.

Sixty-five years later, The Olde Tyme Auto Club (TOTAC) is celebrating its 65th anniversary with a party and car display for the public. The event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Burdette Park’s Bishea Building near the park’s entrance.

A display of rare antique and classic cars by members of TOTAC and other clubs will include (weather permitting) a 1902 Curved Dash Oldsmobile, a 1915 Packard once owned by iconic Gen. “Black Jack” Pershing, a 1939 Rolls Royce and a 1921 Packard. A 1974 Cadillac Eldorado convertible that was among the last in the “big cars” era also will be in the display of about 20 vehicles.

Larry Wahnsiedler and the Grandview Junction Band will perform from 2 to 3 p.m. Visitors will be treated to cake and refreshments.

Organization of The Olde Tyme Auto Club was spurred by the Chamber of Commerce late in 1953 after a caravan of 28 antique cars had journeyed from Evansville to Mount Carmel, Ill., for a parade. Thousands lined the highway to New Harmony to get a look at the old cars.

Charter membership in the new club totaled 176. Only one, Lowell Walker, who joined when he was a teen, is a member today. He owns the 1902 Oldsmobile as well as more than two dozen other antique or classic cars.

Over the years, TOTAC members have driven their old cars on jaunts as far away as Mississippi – two couples drove to California and back – and to parades, mall shows, festivals and any place the vintage autos would attract interest. The club has donated funds to several local charities, the latest an annual grant for auto mechanic students at Ivy Tech college.

ROKITA TARGETS GOOGLE BIAS IN LETTER TO FTC

As the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) begins their public series addressing competition and consumer protection in the 21st century, Congressman Todd Rokita released a second letter to the FTC calling for an investigation into Google misleading their users with manipulated search engine results that benefited their biased agenda. This letter comes on the heels of a recently surfaced video of Google leadership expressing shock and dismay after the election of President Donald Trump.

 

“Google’s unrivalled power online gives them incredible capability to influence people all over the world, and consumers have the right to know if  Google’s search engine is manipulating its results in a biased manner,” said Congressman Todd Rokita. “Time and time again, Google has consistently put liberal media at the forefront of their search results, while silencing conservative voices in the process. That is why I have called upon the FTC to conduct an investigation into Google wrongfully using their growing monopoly to promote liberal agendas.”

 

Earlier this year, Congressman Rokita sent a letter to the FTC and Department of Justice (DOJ) requesting an update on the status of antitrust investigations into Google.
