Secretary Perdue Names FSA Administrator

0

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced the appointment of Richard Fordyce to serve as Administrator of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA). In his role, Fordyce will provide leadership for FSA and its mission to support agricultural production across America through a network of over 2,100 counties and 50 state offices.

“As a fourth-generation farmer, Richard brings firsthand knowledge and experience to this role,” Secretary Sonny Perdue said. “I am confident that he will continue to help USDA become the most efficient, effective customer-focused agency in the federal government as he leads this customer-focused mission area.”

Richard Fordyce most recently served as State Executive Director for FSA in Missouri. Prior to his appointment by the Trump Administration, Fordyce served as the director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture from 2013 to 2017. In 2015, Fordyce has awarded the Missouri Farm Bureau Distinguished Service Award and the Agricultural Leaders of Tomorrow Alumnus of the Year. He and his wife, Renee, have two children and grow soybeans, corn and beef cattle on the family farm.

ENOUGH SUGGESTIONS, ALREADY By Jim Redwine

ENOUGH SUGGESTIONS, ALREADY

Those few of you who actually read this column on a regular basis will recall my completely justified response to Peg’s destruction of my weekend by sentencing me to help her haul, open and spread 120 fifty-pound bags of brown mulch at JPeg Ranch. You might say, “Well, Peg worked too”. But you see, Peg lives for such opportunities so to her it is not work. On the other hand, as for me, a ball game viewed from the couch is a more appropriate way to spend a Saturday.

I was quite astonished and even a little hurt when several readers of last week’s article weighed in with suggestions on what I should do with the mulch. It surprised me that everyone who responded so uncharitably sided with Peg. After all, she was the one responsible for the mulch being there in the first place. I will relate a few of the unkind, and even inappropriate, suggestions.

Neighbors, who need not be named as we only have two, came over during the mulching marathon last weekend and instead of offering sweat offered advice. “Why don’t you just put all the bags out while Peg is planting the garden and the new flowers?” I did not respond what I was thinking but chose to just pretend I heard nothing.

Then at Sara’s Harmony Way Coffee Shop on Sunday morning Barb Mc Connell who had been the initial instigator of the mulch acquisition from the New Harmony Garden Club asked Peg about the progress of the mulching program which gave Peg an opportunity in front of the entire round table crowd to point out my poor attitude.

Then I received an email from the Posey County Jail referencing the previous article and making a rather rude suggestion of what I could do with the mulch. How do those people access the Internet anyway?

But, as is often the case with my big sister who read the article from the safety of her home in Missouri, Janie took Peg’s side again. Janie, who was always allowed by our parents to lord it over her three brothers, first mentioned that Peg was just trying to beautify JPeg Ranch for our grandson’s upcoming wedding. Then she sarcastically suggested if I was too lazy to properly spread the mulch before the wedding I could just cover the piles with white satin.

USI’s Johnson earns Academic All-District

0

The University of Southern Indiana Softball junior second baseman Claire Johnson (Pittsboro, Indiana) was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District IV team in a vote by the sports information directors in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region.

Johnson, who advances onto the Academic All-America ballot, is earning Academic All-District accolades for the first time in her career after compiling a 3.85 grade point average in exercise science and kinesiology.

On the field, Johnson is currently hitting .315 with six doubles, seven triples, four home runs and 21 RBIs. She has helped lead the Screaming Eagles to a 32-22 overall record and to their first Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament crown since 1998.

USI is scheduled to play Hillsdale College today in the second round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Region #1 Tournament Friday in Allendale, Michigan. The start of the game is currently delayed due to rain.

Man Charged in Poaching of Three-Legged Deer

1

Indiana Conservation Officers have filed charges in Hamilton County against a man who shot a three-legged deer in January 2017.  Local residents of Deming had frequently spotted the doe for several years, as it raised several sets of fawns.  Local deer hunters had formed a pact to leave the deer alone.
Allegedly, the doe was shot illegally with a rifle from the suspect’s vehicle on a public roadway and was left in the field. The deer was recovered by Indiana Conservation Officers, who donated the venison.  In February 2018, a phone tip led to a suspect, who later admitted to taking the deer.
The suspect is currently facing multiple Class C Misdemeanor charges, including additional wildlife offenses.
Indiana Conservation Officers thank the person who called our tip line to report the information that led to a successful resolution of this case.  Anyone wishing to report poaching activity can do so at any time by calling 1(800)TIP-IDNR.  All information, including that of the caller, will be kept confidential and reward money can be issued for information that leads to the conviction of violators
