National Weather Service confirms EF-1 tornado in southwestern Indiana

 AUGUST 1, 2024

Evansville, Ind. – July 31, 2024 – CenterPoint Energy is providing an evening update following Tuesday’s severe weather in southwestern Indiana. The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed an EF-1 tornado, with peak winds around 110 mph, struck eastern Vanderburgh and western Warrick counties, causing extensive damage to the electric system and widespread outages.

Nearly 90% of customers have been restored with approximately 3,500 customers remaining without power. The company is expecting to restore power to nearly all customers by the end of day Thursday, Aug. 1. CenterPoint continues to prioritize the restoration of power to facilities vital to safety, health and welfare. More than 400 line-skills and vegetation management professionals have been engaged in restoring power to impacted customers.

The NWS has forecasted unusual heat and humidity levels continuing through Thursday afternoon. CenterPoint is working closely with local emergency management, public officials and the American Red Cross of Southwest Indiana to provide resources and cooling shelters for those in need. The City of Evansville has activated its temporary cooling shelter at the C.K. Newsome Center. In Warrick County, a cooling shelter has been activated in Newburgh at the Castle High School gym. Additionally, a cooling shelter has been opened at the Main Street United Methodist Church in Boonville.

The possibility of scattered thunderstorms remains this evening, with a chance of more widespread thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening. This forecasted severe weather may interfere with ongoing restoration work and could cause the outage count to fluctuate. Crews will continue restoration work as it’s safe to do so.

“We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we continue to perform essential work to restore power safely and efficiently,” said Shane Bradford, CenterPoint’s Vice President, Indiana Electric. “Our crews are working diligently to restore power to our customers, and safety remains our top priority. We urge everyone to take necessary precautions with the forecasted unusual heat and potential storms. We also want to thank public officials and emergency personnel for their ongoing support and collaboration during this challenging time.”

CenterPoint reminds customers if they have experienced damage to the weatherhead – the point of entry from the service drop to the home – a licensed electrician will need to make necessary repairs before power can be safely restored.

Vanderburghurgh County Lists Tax Sale Properties

BY CCO STAFF

August 1, 2024

Vanderburgh County this week listed more than 600 properties where it will attempt to sell the tax liability to recover more than $4.5 million in unpaid taxes.  The properties meet the minimum requirement of missing tax payments for 18 months.

The sale will occur on September 17 at the Old National Events Plaza.

Some highlights from the list:

The property with the most taxes owed is two parcels at 3200 North Sixth Avenue, with a minimum bid of $816,548 and $619,920. Another connected parcel on Allens Lane has $560,000 in unpaid taxes. This location is the former Miller Plating. It is owned by MPMF Realty LLC, which dissolved in 2011. The government spent millions of dollars cleaning the contamination left by the business.

The Miller Plating building was demolished years ago.

The highest unpaid tax bill for a multi-family home is $21,186 for a 10-bedroom and bathroom property at 521 SE First St. It is owned by a company that told the Treasurer’s Office to send the tax bill to an address in Idaho, but registered the business in Indianapolis with a California address.

pastedGraphic_1.pngThe company with the most delinquent properties isn’t even a valid corporation anymore. Masrani Global LLC of Salem, Indiana dissolved in 2023. This company has 24 properties with a combined $66,000 tax liability. All properties are in residential neighborhoods, and the county once auctioned many due to unpaid taxes.

EVANSVILLE, IN: Getting ready for a new school year can be exciting. Picking out new shoes and students, and a fond memory for many adults. However, not every student gets to experience creating those memories. This year that experience is expanding with new partnerships.

On July 31st from 12-2 pm, 8+ community partners will come together to hold a Back to School Bash for 45 children and dependents residing in various ECHO Housing and Community Development housing programs. The event will take place at St. Lucas UCC/Fresh Air Church at 33 W. Virginia Street.

The community partners include St. Lucas UCC, Fresh Air Church, St. Paul’s UCC, Pay it Forward Local, Shoe Sensation, Evansville Police Department, Kona Ice, Access, and several private donors of ECHO Housing and Community Development.

The children will be able to pick out their own backpacks, receive all the school supplies on their lists, get new school uniforms, pick out new shoes, have a hot dog lunch, and free KonaIce. It should be a day of making fun memories for the children, and their families, as well as for the partners and volunteers who are making it happen.
