Back-to-Back! Eagles blank Stars for second straight regional title

0

University of Southern Indiana Softball is heading back to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Tournament after clinching its second straight Midwest Region title with a 3-0 win over No. 19 University of Illinois Springfield in game two of the Midwest Super Regional Friday.

The Screaming Eagles (36-23) used a two-out, RBI-single by sophomore outfielder Allison Schubert (Nicholasville, Kentucky) in the bottom of the third inning to break a scoreless tie and build a 1-0 lead.

Schubert’s double in the fifth inning put a pair of runners in scoring position for senior third baseman Mena Fulton (Bloomington, Indiana), who roped a two-run single to right-centerfield to extend the Eagles’ advantage to 3-0.

Sophomore second baseman Claire Johnson (Pittsboro, Indiana) got the Eagles’ started offensively as she drew lead-off walks in the first and third innings before singling to begin the fifth frame. Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Springfield, Illinois) had sacrifice bunts in both the first and third innings.

Leonhardt (21-12) was stellar, once again, inside the circle. After blanking the Prairie Stars (40-19) on three hits in game one on Thursday, she returned to the circle to scatter five hits throughout seven innings to notch her second straight complete-game shutout and fourth of the post-season.

The Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year as a freshman in 2017, Leonhardt finished the contest with eight strikeouts. She also broke USI Hall of Famer Karianne Osowski’s single-season school record for strikeouts (230) with her second strikeout of the day.

USI opens the 2018 NCAA II Softball Championship Thursday against an opponent to be determined. First pitch is also TBA.

JUST IN: Evansville Police Arrested Robert Ballard Jr On Attempted Murder Charges

0

Evansville Police have arrested 56-year-old Robert Ballard Jr on attempted murder charges in connection with the shooting of two women on Friday evening.

Ballard targeted the victims, who are a mother and her adult daughter, and shot them as they sat in a car. The adult daughter’s two children were in the car at the time of the shootings. The children were not injured.

Police believe Ballard had been in a relationship with the older victim and that the relationship had recently ended. She had been staying in the 1000 block of W Delaware for an unknown period of time.

An armed neighbor confronted Ballard as the shooting was happening and the two men exchanged gunfire. Officers who were nearby heard the gunfire and responded to the area. They were able to take Ballard into custody without any further gunfire. The neighbor was not injured and is considered a witness at this time. Ballard will be booked into the jail later this evening.

The two victims are currently being treated for life-threatening injuries. Anyone who has information on this incident is asked to call EPD.

AG Curtis Hill participates in White House summit on prison reform

0

At the invitation of the White House, Attorney General Curtis Hill today participated in a prison reform summit with President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and other state leaders.

In March, President Trump signed an executive order establishing the Federal Interagency Council on Crime Prevention and Improving Reentry. The goal is to provide previously incarcerated individuals with greater opportunities for productivity upon release from jails or prisons — thereby improving the lives of all Americans by reducing crime, enhancing public safety and increasing opportunity.

“In Indiana and across the nation, we need to better equip those who are incarcerated with the tools to lead better lives after prison,” Attorney General Hill said after today’s meetings. “I was glad to share some of the successes and lessons from Indiana’s experience in this regard, including the effectiveness of such initiatives as the TenPoint Coalition and Jail Chemical Addiction Programs. Looking to the future, Hoosiers should expect to see continued progress in these areas.”

Other state leaders taking part in today’s discussions included Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez and Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin.

Griffin, McNamara lead Eagles in 12 inning upset of Bellarmine

0

University of Southern Indiana senior right-hander Kyle Griffin (Morganfield, Kentucky) threw five dominating relief innings and senior leftfielder/first baseman Drake McNamara (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) established a new single-season RBI record to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 12-inning upset victory over Bellarmine University, 9-7, in the first round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois. USI, the seventh seed, watched its record go to 33-21 overall, while Bellarmine, the second seed, ends game with a 37-18 mark.

The Eagles, with the win, advances to play the winner of the Northwood University-Ashland University game at 8:30 p.m. Friday night. Northwood, who is the third seed, and Ashland, who is the sixth seed, are slated to match-up in the 8:30 p.m. contest tonight.

USI opened regional play by exploding for five run in the first four frames of the game. McNamara ignited the scoring with a RBI-single to make the score, 1-0, and tie the USI single-season record for RBIs with his 70th of the season (Brad Vance had 70 RBIs during the Eagles’ 2010 national championship run.). Senior first baseman/pitcher Nick Gobert (Jasper, Indiana) followed McNamara with a RBI-sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 2-0 after a half of an inning.

The margin was extended to 3-0 in the second on a RBI-single by junior second baseman Jacob Fleming(Evansville, Indiana). The Eagles reached the 5-0 mark in the top of the fourth when senior rightfielder Buddy Johnson (Shelbyville, Kentucky) knocked in a pair of runners with a two-run single.

After the Knights got a tally in the bottom of the fourth, the Eagles bounced back to get the run back in the top of the fifth on a RBI-single by freshman centerfielder Bryce Krizan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) to put the margin at 6-1. Bellarmine, however, responded with three runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead after seven.

Fleming would strike again in the top of the eighth when he knocked in freshman shortstop Ethan Hunter(Terre Haute, Indiana) with a RBI-ground out to knot the game at 7-7 and set the stage for the extra frames.

In the 12th, Hunter singled in senior third baseman Ben Griggs (Evansville, Indiana) with eventual game-winning run before McNamara sealed the victory with an RBI-double for his record-breaking 71st RBI of the season to give the Eagles a 9-7 lead.

Bellarmine, however, was not about to go quietly in the bottom of the 12th. The Knights loaded the bases with no-one out before Griffin set them down with a striking out and a double play to finish the game.

On the mound, Griffin (6-3) was dominating in five inning of relief work after coming in to start the eighth with the game tied, 7-7. He scattered two hits and two walks, while striking a staggering 10 batters.

USI senior right-hander Devin Williams (Evansville, Indiana) started the game for the Eagles and got the no-decision after going 4.1 innings. Williams, who allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out four, was followed to the mound by senior right-hander Nick Coudret (Newburgh, Indiana) and Gobert before the entrance of Griffin in the eighth.
