EVANSVILLE, Ind. – For the more than 12,300 students attending Ivy Tech Evansville, one day can make a difference. On April 8, Ivy Tech Evansville will join Ivy Tech Community College’s 19 campuses across Indiana in celebrating Ivy Tech Day, a 24-hour fundraising event dedicated to student success, scholarships, and transformative programs. Community members, alumni, faculty, staff, and donors are encouraged to participate and support the students shaping the Evansville Campus 10-county region’s workforce and economy.

“Ivy Tech Day is a celebration of the students, alumni, and employers we serve,” said Daniela Vidal, chancellor of Ivy Tech Evansville. “Every dollar raised directly impacts our students by providing scholarships, career training, and resources to help them succeed. We hope to see our communities rally together in support of student success and economic growth in the Southwest Indiana region.”

How to Participate

Supporting Ivy Tech Evansville is easy. Donations can be made at ivytech.edu/giveday starting at midnight on April 8. Supporters can also set up a matching gift, become a social ambassador or visit local community partners participating in Ivy Tech

Last year, Ivy Tech Evansville raised more than $28,000 for student scholarships, wraparound supports and programs on Ivy Tech Day. The annual day of giving raised more than $400,000 for Ivy Tech students across Indiana.

Ivy Tech contributes nearly $4 billion annually to Indiana’s economy, with over 80% of graduates remaining in the state. In 2023-24, the College awarded more than 46,000 credentials—nearly half of all postsecondary credentials earned in Indiana.

USI BB walks off to series win Sunday

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana junior shortstop Clayton Slack singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Screaming Eagles to an 8-7 victory over the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI is 12-15 overall and 4-2 in the OVC after the second game of the series, while Little Rock goes to 10-18, 1-5 in the OVC.

USI was in a hole to start the game as Little Rock scored five times in the top of the first to lead 5-0. USI junior designated hitter Cole Kitchens pushed the Eagles’ first run of the game across in the bottom of the first with an RBI single that extended his hitting streak to 16 games.

The 16-game streak is the longest by any Screaming Eagle since Logan Brown produced a 21-game stretch in 2018.

The Trojans re-extended the lead back to five runs with a tally in the second before the Screaming Eagles exploded for four runs in the third to pull to within one, 6-5. Slack led the charge in the four-run frame with a two-run single to finish the scoring in the inning.

In the top of the fifth, the Trojans threatened to take command once again, loading the bases with no one out, but USI junior left-hander Jake Porter struck out the side to preserve USI’s one-run deficit.

USI pulled ahead for the first time, 7-6, with a tally to tie the score in the fifth and another in the sixth on an RBI double by Kitchens. Little Rock tied the game in the seventh, 7-7, with a home run and set the stage for Slack and USI in the ninth.

In the ninth, Kitchens reached on an error, while sophomore pinch runner Anthony Umbach pinch ran and advanced to second when junior third baseman Patrick McLellan reached on a walk. Umbach advanced to third on a fly out by junior first baseman Kannon Coakley and scored the 8-7, USI game-winner on the single by Slack.

On the mound, USI senior right-hander Ian Anderson picked up his second win in relief. Anderson (2-0) pitched four innings, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out two.

Porter preceded Anderson to the mound, throwing three scoreless relief innings, allowing four hits and a walk. He also struck out a season-high six batters.

Diving, Breaststroke Shine Again in Prelims

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Two-time reigning platform champion and Indiana senior Carson Tyler will try to make it three consecutive championships in the event to close his illustrious career Saturday (March 29) night at the 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships inside the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

One competitor standing in his way is classmate and the similarly well-decorated Quinn Henninger, joining him in the championship final. The pair will look to repeat the one-two finish they earned on the 3-meter springboard Friday night.

Indiana will send nine Hoosiers to Saturday’s final session of the NCAA Championships with six in championship finals and three in ‘B’ finals. Additionally, junior and reigning NCAA 1,650-yard freestyle champion Zalán Sárkány will swim the fastest heat of the mile, the event kicking off the session at 9 p.m. ET. IU’s 400-yard freestyle relay is the No. 6 seed in the final race of the meet. The Hoosiers sit third in the team standings with 304 points, 8.5 points from second-place Cal and 64 points out of first place.

Two Hoosiers broke program records in morning heats.

Graduate student Jassen Yep shattered the 200-yard breaststroke program record by 44 hundredths, his 1:49.39 placing second in the morning. At the Big Ten Championships, Yep and senior Josh Matheny became the second and third Hoosiers ever to break 1:50 in the event, with the latter breaking Ian Finnerty’s 2019 program record with a 1:49.83 to win the conference title. Now, Yep is inching towards 1:48 and will challenge for the NCAA title as the No. 2 seed in the final.

Graduate transfer Caspar Corbeau finished fourth in the 200 breast prelims with a 1:50.07 to join Yep, and Matheny made the ‘B’ final in 1:50.41.

Junior Matt King snuck into the 100-yard freestyle consolation final with a 41.14, his personal best knocking down Olympian Blake Pieroni’s 41.16 from the 2018 championships. He’ll swim again from lane eight and then again in the 400 freestyle relay.

Vaneta Becker Shares Thoughts on Crime and Agriculture Bills

0
Fighting Violent Crime and Deadly Drugs
In recent years, communities across Indiana have experienced an increase in deadly drugs and violent crime on our streets.

Senate Bill 324 is currently making its way through the Indiana General Assembly and would increase criminal penalties for meth and fentanyl dealers. It would also require individualized bail determinations for arrestees charged with violent crimes so more scrutiny is given to whether the arrestee should be allowed back on our streets.

I supported this bill to help local law enforcement crack down on drug dealers putting dangerous substances in our communities and to help keep Hoosiers across the state safe.

SB 324 passed the Senate with bipartisan support and is now being considered by the House of Representatives.

Honoring Hoosier Farmers
For more than 200 years, Indiana has had a proud agricultural tradition.

Today, the agriculture industry contributes more than $35 billion to Indiana’s economy each year.

Last week, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture honored farms that have been owned by the same family for 100, 150 and 200 years with Hoosier Homestead Awards.

In Senate District 50, the Henry G. Wallis farms in Vanderburgh County received Centennial and Sesquicentennial awards.

Congratulations to these family farms for earning these honors and thank you for your continued dedication to Indiana’s agricultural heritage.

TALOR JOSEPH LEADS THUNDERBOLTS TO COMEBACK WIN OVER RIVERMEN

0
Evansville, In.:  In his debut between the pipes for the Thunderbolts, Talor Joseph stood tall with 28 saves on 30 shots to help Evansville rally and force overtime, where Scott Kirton scored to win the game for Evansville 3-2 over the Rivermen on Sunday afternoon at Ford Center.  The Thunderbolts’ next home game will be on Friday, April 4th against the Birmingham Bulls at 7:05pm CT.
In the first period, Peoria grabbed the opening lead as Griffen Fox deflected a shot from Kylar Fenton to give the Rivermen a 1-0 lead at 13:26.  Evansville levied a response late in the period, as Bronson Adams found some open ice inside the blue line and sniped home a shot to tie the game 1-1 at 19:20, assisted by Kirton and Nolan Dawson, the assist for Dawson being his first professional point.  Following a scoreless second period, the Rivermen regained the lead 6:53 into the third period as Mike Gelatt scored on a power play chance.  In the final minutes of regulation, Joseph was pulled for an extra attacker, and Evansville scored seconds later to tie the game 2-2 at 17:22, as Tyson Gilmour deflected a shot from Isaac Chapman, also assisted by Nolan McElhaney.  In overtime, Gelatt took a major penalty for boarding Chapman, leading to an Evansville power play for the remainder of overtime.  At 2:59, Kirton scored on a rebound from Myles Abbate and Gilmour to win the game for Evansville by a 3-2 score, simultaneously ending both Evansville’s 5-game losing streak as well as Peoria’s 5-game win streak.
Gilmour and Kirton each picked up a goal and assist, with Adams adding one goal.  In goal, Talor Joseph finished with 28 saves on 30 shots on goal, becoming the first Thunderbolts goaltender to win in his debut since Sean Kuhn on November 3, 2023, against the Macon Mayhem.  The Thunderbolts and Rivermen do not meet again this regular season but could meet in the first round of the President’s Cup Playoffs, with Peoria winning the regular season series 8-4.
