Jevin Redman named Voice of the Aces

0

Redman is a native of Mt. Vernon, Indiana

Jevin Redman, a native of Mt. Vernon, Ind., has been named the new Voice of the Aces and will represent the program on the Purple Aces Radio Network.

“I am beyond thrilled to be named the voice of the University of Evansville,” Redman said.  “Growing up in the Tri-State area, Aces Basketball has always been the talk of the town and I am excited to now be a small part of it.”

“I take great pride in being the voice of UE on their first ever multi-station radio network with Learfield Sports and can’t wait to relay the excitement over the airways to Evansville’s passionate fan base,” he added.

Redman joins the Purple Aces after working at Western Kentucky University as the radio play-by-play broadcaster for Lady Toppers Basketball.  He also hosted the weekly coaches radio show.

His experience spans a wide range of sports in the area as he spent the 2017 season working for the Louisville Bats.  His tenure with the Cincinnati Reds Triple-A affiliate included work as their play-by-play announcer as well as working with media relations and in-game social media.  He also worked on the GLVC Sports Network doing TV for the 2017 basketball tournament.

In 2016, Redman worked with the Evansville Otters as the Director of Broadcasting and radio voice.  He has also done work for 14 WFIE in Evansville.

Redman’s career began in his college days at the University of Southern Indiana.  Between 2013 and 2017, he did radio for the Screaming Eagles baseball team as well as their men’s and women’s basketball squads while serving as the Sports Director at WSWI.

He graduated from USI with a BS in Marketing and Radio/Television.  A 2-time Jim Nantz Top 20 Collegiate Broadcaster, Redman was named the Best Play-by-Play Broadcaster in Indiana by the Indiana Broadcasters Association in 2016 while garnering the Broadcast Education Association Best Collegiate Play-by-Play Broadcaster in the nation award in 2015.

UE recently announced a partnership with Learfield Sports that helped to formulate the Purple Aces Radio Network.  The network encompasses five stations in the Tri-State area with WJPS 107.1 in Evansville/Boonville serving as the flagship station.

Kick Off Grilling Season with Food Safety in Mind

0

For many Americans, the summer grilling and travel season begins this upcoming weekend. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) wants to make sure you and your family avoid food poisoning this summer. An estimated 128,000 Americans are hospitalized with food poisoning each year, but foodborne illnesses can be prevented during summer months by properly handling perishable foods during travel, and by using a food thermometer when grilling.

Leonhardt tosses no-hitter as Eagles blank Rambelles

0

A day after throwing a one-hit shutout in USI Softball’s 1-0 upset of top-ranked University of North Georgia, sophomore pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) one-upped herself.

Leonhardt (23-12) tossed a complete-game no-hitter as the Screaming Eagles upset No. 6 Angelo State University, 3-0, Friday to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Softball Championship.

The Eagles (38-23) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning when junior outfielder Caitlyn Bradley (Forest, Indiana) roped a two-out, two-run single down the right field line. Sophomore outfielder Allison Schubert (Nicholasville, Kentucky) followed with an RBI-single for the Eagles, who had four hits and took advantage of an Angelo State error in the fifth frame.

Angelo State (53-8), meanwhile, was limited to just one base runner—a two-out walk in the second inning—as Leonhardt mowed down 10 batters en route to her second career no-hitter, fourth straight complete-game shutout and sixth complete-game shutout of the postseason.

Leonhardt’s effort Friday marked the first no-hitter in the NCAA II Softball Championship since University of Indianapolis ace Morgan Foley tossed a no-hitter in the Greyhound’s 1-0 win over North Georgia May 21, 2015. The only perfect game in NCAA II Softball Championship history was thrown by Kathy Slaten of California State University-Northridge May 21, 1983.

Due to rain in the forecast Saturday, USI’s semifinal game has been moved to 9:30 a.m. (CDT). The Eagles will face either North Georgia, West Chester University or St. Leo University. A win Saturday puts the Eagles into the best-of-three national championship series, which starts Sunday at 4 p.m.

IS IT TRUE MAY 25, 2018

6

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE back in March of 2018 the Director of the Evansville DMD publically stated that; “ECHO Housing is an important partner for the Department of Metropolitan Development. ….that the DMD’s Director Kelley Courses also made the following statement concerning DMD continue financial support of ECHO HOUSING?  …he said “We’re going to continue without missing a beat’. “We’re going to support ECHO just the same as we always have”?  …we wonder if he will make the same commitment after the results of the EPD criminal Investigation and the Forensic Audit is completed and made public?

IS IT TRUE we are told that several people feel that the Evansville 3rd Ward City Councilmen G. John Hayden statement that he is a Certified Public Accountant everytime someone talks about financial matters at Council meetings is getting a little old? … at last Mondays Council meetings 3rd Ward City Councilman G. John Hayden, CPA that tried to convince members of City Council to allow ECHO HOUSING to continue to do business as usual even though they are being currently being investigated by the EPD for financial improprieties and undergoing an extensive Forensic Audit?  …we commend several non-Certified Public Accountants City Council members for stopping G. John Hayden, CPA  from getting his way with allowing ECHO Housing to continue to do business as usual?

IS IT TRUE we got a kick out of the recent comment made by the acting Director of ECHO Housing Chris Metz that he couldn’t release a copy of the completed Forensic Audit because it is considered to be a part of a criminal investigation being conducted by the EPD?  …that someone needs to tell Mr. Metz that all we want to know at this point is how much money is missing from the ECHO HOUSING bank accounts without naming people who may be involved in stealing agency funds?

IS IT TRUE we can guarantee Mr. Metz that the area media won’t quietly stand by and allow the Forensic Audit of ECHO Housing to remain confidential without filing a Public Information Request with the City, DMD, and ECHO Housing?  …we predict when that happens the media will be successful in getting a copy of Forensic Audit of ECHO Housing and will make it public? …all we can say is;’Hello Big Red Truck, ECHO Housing is funded by taxpayers dollars”?

IS IT TRUE that the Vanderburgh County Commissioners hosted a first-ever “Vanderburgh County Board Appointment” luncheon yesterday?  …that this luncheon was publically advertised so all three County Commissioners could attend this worthy event?   …to our surprise, this function was not only well attended but was very productive and engaging?  …that this lunch was the brainchild of Vanderburgh County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave?  …this type of event was also the first time that the County has ever hosted such lunch? …the event was so popular that our County Commissioners has wisely decided to host these lunches quarterly? …the CCO would like to applaud Commissioner Musgrave for thinking outside the political box by creating this event?  …we also give five (5) cheers to County Commissioners Bruce Ungethiem, Cheryl Musgrave and Ben Shoulders for continuing to be “good listeners?”

IS IT TRUE the Vanderburgh County Old Courthouse Committee is hosting another “Lunch on the Lawn” today from 11 am until 2 pm outside of the Old Courthouse?  ….that the OCHF (Old Courthouse Foundation) in conjunction with Vanderburgh County officials will provide food trucks of all kinds, family-friendly events?  …we urge you to attend this event because we are confident that you will enjoy this fun luncheon?
IS IT TRUE we are hearing that the Evansville Water and Sewer Board may be increasing our water and sewer rates again sometime this coming budget year? …if they continue to raise our water and sewer rates a fifth of Jack Daniels will cost less than a fifth of Evansville Water?
IS IT TRUE we wonder what the status of the Evansville Water and Sewer Utilities lawsuit against the owners of the McCurdy?
IS IT TRUE we hope that members of the Evansville City Council will give the Evansville Water and Sewer Department proposed 2019 Budget a close look? … it’s a well-known fact that the Evansville Water And Sewer Department has quietly advanced the City of Evansville many of millions of dollars over the last several years so the city can pay past and current bills?  …it’s a well-known fact that the Evansville Water and Sewer Department also has a reputation of providing numerous political patronage jobs?
IS IT TRUE when the Mayor of Evansville and his buddies recently visited our sister city in Germany he left his Deputy Mayor, Steve Schaefer to run the city in his absence?  …we commend Steve Schaefer for doing a credible job in running the city in the Mayor’s absence?
IS IT TRUE that the University of Evansville has long been a good value inspire of its high priced tuition?…UE has been a stepping stone to elite graduate schools and has challenged students in a way that launched many a successful career?…UE just raised its ranking by 10 spots to be named the #3 value in the Midwest in its class of institutions of higher learning?…this designation is an honor that should fill the people of Evansville with pride?
IS IT TRUE that the University of Southern Indiana also known as USI has also, reached an important milestone with an enrollment of 11,033 students for the 2017-18 school year?…USI has grown from a regional branch campus of Indiana State University to a stand-alone college of over 10,000 students during the last 40+ years since it started in temporary facilities?… the City of Evansville is fortunate to have both UE and USI along with IVY Tech?…between these three institutions every person has an affordable opportunity to a good education without leaving the City of Evansville?

CCO EXCLUSIVE: Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Nick Hermann Will Have A Democratic Challenger

15

Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Nick Hermann Will Have A Democratic Challenger

We have just been told by reliable sources that Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Nick Hermann will have a Democratic challenger this November, it’s going to be former longtime Vanderburgh County prosecutor Stan Levco.

Vanderburgh County Democratic Chairman, Scott Danks, says; six attorneys have expressed interest in running against Hermann and that Danks considers Hermann to be “very vulnerable.”

Danks also stated; “Hermann only tried one case prior to becoming Prosecutor and was found to be ineffective by our Appellate Courts”. “Since becoming Prosecutor over seven and a half years ago, he has only tried a handful of cases and only tries those that he considers to be slam dunks.”

Danks went on to say that; “Hermann has the highest number of not guilty verdicts, dismissals and staff turnover of any Prosecuting Attorney in modern history.”

Danks also claims that Hermann frequently engages in wasteful spending, stating that after Hermann remodeled the prosecutor’s office it was nicknamed the “Nick Mahal.”  Danks also alleges that Hermann overpays his pet employees, misrepresents their duties and forces Defendants to use one or more vendors that contribute heavily to Hermann’s campaign.

Levco served as Vanderburgh County Prosecutor for over 20 years. Hermann ran against Levco in 2006 and lost by a landslide. Hermann ran again in 2010, and with a Republican tide, won by a narrow margin.

Mr. Danks stated; “Levco is a highly respected career prosecutor. Since leaving the prosecutor’s office, Levco has served as special prosecutor throughout the State, trying high profile, and many times very complex criminal cases. Levco has maintained a very high conviction rate.”

Danks says “the other attorneys who have expressed an interest have indicated they would “stand down” if Levco decides to run, due to Levco’s experience and skill level”.

Danks, who supported Hermann in his successful bid for prosecutor in 2010, said he’s not bashful about admitting when he’s made a mistake and, “that was a big one.”

Commentary: Susan Bayh And The Fairytale That Never Was

0

By John Krull

TheStatehouseFile.com

INDIANAPOLIS – Susan Bayh turned the tables on me.

This was long ago, early in her time as Indiana’s first lady. Her husband, Democrat Evan Bayh, had ended a 20-year-long run of Republicans holding the state’s top office by winning the governorship in 1988.

The Bayhs were young and beautiful. He was just past 30. She was just shy of it. Susan was a former Miss Southern California. Evan looked like a male model.

Together, they seemed like Indiana’s answer to Jack and Jackie, a heartland Camelot myth in the making, a Hoosier couple destined to dance among the stars. Detractors and political opponents dismissed them as the state’s version of Barbie and Ken, synthetic figures without souls.

I wanted to do a piece on what it felt like to be that youthful and at the center of so much attention and speculation.

The young Mrs. Bayh and I met for the interview at Shapiro’s, a deli on Indianapolis’s near south side.

As we munched on sandwiches, I asked her questions about what her life was like. She answered each one forthrightly and often with a great deal of wit.

But, after she’d answered, she’d pose a question of her own, one similar in tone and scope to mine.

Then, she’d smile and wait for me to respond, refusing to address any more of my queries until I’d dealt with hers.

Finally, I shook my head and laughed.

She asked why.

“I’m trying to figure out the precise moment I lost control of this interview,” I said.

She smiled.

Point made.

The lives she and her husband led were lives like those of other human beings, not the stuff of some fairytale. Their marriage had its joys and stresses, just like everyone else’s.

The important thing to remember, she argued, with charm and grace, was that it was their marriage.

And no one else’s.

I can’t claim to know Evan and Susan Bayh as well as some people do.

But it’s always seemed to me that the key to understanding them was to understand the nature of their reserve. Because so much of their lives had to be exhibited to the public, it was important to them to keep the private parts as private as they could.

They needed some space that could be theirs and theirs alone.

That became clear during the gubernatorial years. The Bayhs wanted to start a family. Their first attempt ended, as it does for so many young couples, in a miscarriage.

The Bayhs had not wanted the public to know Susan was pregnant, but the story leaked. When the pregnancy ended, the young couple had to deal not only with grief and loss but a sense of violation.

I wrote a column at the time saying it was easy to understand why they felt violated, but that I hoped they could take some comfort from the knowledge that many people grieved with them. Sorrow is something we all experience, a part of life that unites us as people.

After the piece ran, Evan Bayh called me. He said the column brought comfort to both him and Susan.

So much time has passed since those days.

The Bayhs did have a family, twin boys who graduate from college this spring. Evan Bayh’s political career stalled after a couple of terms in the U.S. Senate, then crashed in 2016 when his comeback attempt failed.

The fairytale that never was ended.

And now comes the news that Susan Bayh battles brain cancer of the same sort that U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, fights. It’s same cancer that took the lives of U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, and Beau Biden, former Vice President Joe Biden’s son.

In a statement, the Bayh family said Susan, her husband, and her sons plan to face and fight this cancer with dignity and determination.

Doubtless, they will.

And much of that fight will be hers and theirs alone.

But it is my hope that Susan Bayh and her family will forgive the rest of us for sharing our concern, our prayers, and our heartfelt best wishes.

And that she turns the tables on this disease, just as she did on me oh so long ago.
