“IS IT TRUE” JUNE 12, 2018

10

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE last night the Inland Marina Harbour Master, heard a bartender yell that someone just jumped in the river?  …that the Inland Marina Harbour Master jumped in his the Jon boat and started going after him?  … that the water current was running extremely fast downstream but the Marina Harbour Master caught the drowning man and secured him to the Jon boat and waited till the fire department came to get him from the water and revived him?  …this is a developing story?

IS IT TRUE our prediction that a last-minute amendment will be added to the proposed “Noise Ordinance” by Connie Robinson was spot on? …Councilwomen Robinson amendment to the “Noise Ordinance” proved to be acceptable to the majority of City Council members for passage?  …when City Council allowed amendments to the “Noise Ordinance,”  it insured that outdoor entertainment events and future investors in the music/bar businesses will continue locating here?  …when City Council accepted the “Robinson 75 Decibel” amendment to the “Noise Ordinance” it guaranteed that the boundary within the City limits is now treated equally?  …we commend City Councilwomen Connie Robinson for thinking outside the political box?
IS IT TRUE the discussion of the proposed “Noise Ordinance” lasted for several hours?  …we commend City Council President Jim Brinkmeyer for doing a credible job in allowing everyone the opportunity to speak their piece?  …we especially were impressive how Councilpersons Mosby, Weaver, Robinson, and Elpers were well prepared concerning the details of the subject matter?  …we must say that City Council Attorney Josh Clayborn did an extremely good job in advising Council the legal issues concerning this extremely complicated ordinance? …after all, said and done the vote taken by City Council to amend the current “Noise Ordinance” was a “good public policy” moment? …hats off to the At-Large City Councilperson Dr. Dan Adams for graciously accepting several amendments to his well written ‘Noise Ordinance”?
IS IT TRUE that yesterday a political bombshell was delivered by local Republican party boss Wayne Parke to the popular Cody Morris? … that Mr. Parke removed Cody Morris as a Republican Precinct Chairman?  …that the e-mail text to sent to Cody Morris by Mr. Parke stated that “you are being removed as a Precinct Chairman for the following reason “is that you cannot be a Republican and support Democrat Joe Donnelly for the Senate”?
IS IT TRUE we wonder why lifelong Republican Cody Morris wasn’t removed by the local “GOP Party Boss” Wayne Parke years back when he openly supported Democratic Knight Township Trustee Kathryn Martin for re-election?  …maybe it was because that Mr. Morris was the Campaign Advisor to the Committee To Elect Todd Young to The United States Senate at that time?
IS IT TRUE we are told that the 2019 Evansville City Council At-Large races are beginning to that shape?  …we are hearing that on the Republican side it will be incumbent Michelle Mercer, former County Commissioner candidate Alex Schmitt, and former Democratic City Council member and County Commissioner Steve Melcher?  …we are hearing on the Democratic side it will be incumbent Jonathan Weaver, former County Councilmen Ed Bassemeier, and business owner/community leader Amy Word-Smith? …we can guarantee that the At-Large City Council races are really going to be fun watching?
IS IT TRUE that the TV commercial depicting Indiana Republican US Senatorial candidate Mike Braun as ” Millionaire Mike” is really getting a lot of political traction for his opponent?  …this TV advertising makes some serious charges about Mr. Brauns business practices?  …at the bottom of this political advertising, it stated that the information for this advertising was taken from the Associated Press?

Todays “Readers Poll” question is: DO you feel that Evansville City Council did the right thing in amending the “Noise Ordinance”?

Federal Judge Temporarily Blocks Indiana Voter Purge Law

Federal Judge Temporarily Blocks Indiana Voter Purge Law

A federal judge issues a preliminary injunction against a law that critics say would allow officials to illegally purge voters from Indiana’s election rolls.

The liberal group Common Cause argues Indiana’s use of the interstate crosscheck system is discriminatory. The system finds a match based on first name, last name, and date of birth.

Starting in July, elections officials would be allowed to automatically eliminate voters who show up as registered in another state.

Critics argue voters can only be removed if they confirm a change of address in writing or fail to respond to mailed notices.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt blocked the law this past Friday until the court case wraps up.

Indiana Receives Federal Waiver To Implement The State’s Workforce Plan

0

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb on Friday received a letter from the U.S. Department of Labor indicating a waiver he requested on March 23 has been approved. The waiver allows the new Governor’s Workforce Cabinet to fill the role of the state’s federally-mandated workforce development board. The Governor’s Workforce Cabinet was created in the 2018 legislative session within Senate Enrolled Act 50 and outlines a smaller group with more authority to drive collaboration among employers and state and local partners.

“We are working to build a workforce system that gets more Hoosiers into training and better jobs,” Gov. Holcomb said. “The streamlined structure of the new Governor’s Workforce Cabinet lets us quickly react to changes in the economy and meet the needs of employees and employers. I’m grateful to Secretary Acosta for recognizing that states like Indiana can best innovate when given the flexibility to do so.”

The letter received Friday from the U.S. Department of Labor is attached.

According to the letter, “ETA [the Employment and Training Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor] reviewed the State’s waiver request and plan and has determined that the requirements requested to be waived impede the ability of Indiana to implement its plan to improve the workforce development system. Therefore, ETA approves this waiver for Program Years 2018 through 2020.”

The Governor’s Workforce Cabinet builds on Gov. Holcomb’s Next Level Jobs initiative. Launched in August 2017,  Next Level Jobs connects Hoosiers with the skills and training they need to enter fulfilling, high-demand, high-wage jobs as quickly as possible. The program drives money to adult workers and Indiana employers to cover the cost of training and education. Whether you’re a Hoosier looking for a better-paying job or an employer looking for a better-skilled workforce, Indiana’s Next Level Jobs initiative can help. Learn more at NextLevelJobs.org.

Three Defendants Face Federal Charges Related To Killings Of Two Police Officers

0

Three individuals linked to the killings of Boone County Deputy Jacob Pickett and Terre Haute Police Officer Robert Pitts now face federal charges for the illegal purchase and possession of firearms used in those killings.

United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana Josh Minkler announced Monday that Dawn Rochon, 29, Indianapolis, and Tiffany Dean, 33, and Levi Brenton, 20, Terre Haute, have been charged for their role in illegally purchasing and possessing firearms eventually used to kill Pickett and Pitts earlier this year.

Rochon has been charged with eight counts relating to making false statements when acquiring a firearm after she used a fabricated address on her form of purchase. According to court documents and testimony, Rochon illegally purchased the same gun used to kill Deputy Pickett in March. Of four illegal firearm purchases made by Rochon, three of the guns were used in crimes and were recovered by law enforcement.

Dean, who said she purchased a gun for her brother because he was too young to legally purchase it, also faces charges of making a false statement when purchasing a firearm. Her brother, Brenton, faces charges including conspiracy to make false statements when purchasing a firearm, possession of a firearm by an unlawful drug user, and selling/giving a firearm to an unlawful drug user.

Brenton later sold the firearm purchased by Dean to suspected shooter Christopher Wolfe, 21, who killed Pitts in a shootout on May 4.

“The gun used to kill Deputy Pickett and the gun used to kill Officer Pitts were acquired and purchased in violation of federal law,” Minkler said at a Monday press conference. “As a result of that, two men that had no right to possess a gun shot and killed two brave law enforcement officers.”

The U.S. attorney was joined by several public safety leaders, including Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielson and Terre Haute Chief of Police John Plasse. All of the leaders emphasized the need to work as a team among their departments and encouraged the community to join in their efforts.

In January, Minkler introduced Project Safe Neighborhoods, a violence reduction strategy specifically aimed at reducing the number of homicides and non-fatal shootings in Indianapolis and Evansville. Also in January, six assistant U.S. attorneys were assigned to each IMPD District and the Evansville Police Department to prosecute illegal carriers of firearms.

Enforcement of federal gun laws is the cornerstone of the project safe neighborhoods, Minkler said. The goal is simply to reduce shootings.

“The pattern in both cases is crystal clear,” Minkler said. “Illegal purchases of guns, illegal possession of guns, illegal transfer of guns, an underground gun economy, all in violation of laws created by Congress to prevent shootings … The guns ended up in the hands of trigger pullers to kill law enforcement officers.”
