Otters fall 5-4 to Grizzlies in series opener

The Evansville Otters dropped the first game of a three-game series 5-4 to the Gateway Grizzlies at Bosse Field on Tuesday in front of 1,185 fans.

Gateway opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. After a triple from Terry McClure, Jonathan Piron grounded out to first which scored McClure from third.

The Otters tied the game in the third on a Brandon Dulin solo home run to right, his third of the year.

Gateway retook the lead in the fourth when McClure singled home Blake Brown.

The Otters responded in the bottom of the frame as a Travis Harrison ground out scored Jeff Gardner to tie the game.

The Otters took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. A sacrifice fly from Dulin scored Gardner and a single from Luis Vilorio scored Carlos Castro to put the Otters up by two.

Gateway tied the game back up with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh. An RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Artemis Kadkhodian brought the Grizzlies within one, and then a bases loaded walk to Trae Santos tied the game.

Gateway jumped in front when Kahkhodian walked with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth to force home the go-ahead run.

Brandon Dulin lead the way for the Otters offense, going 1-3, with 2 RBI and a home run.

Otters starter Randy Wynne received a no decision after throwing six innings and working in to the seventh while giving up four runs, three earned.

Grizzlies starter Max MacNabb also garnered a no decision after tossing 5.2 innings and allowing four runs.

Grizzlies reliever Pat Boyle is credited with his first win of the year after throwing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Tyler Beardsley is dealt the loss for the Otters after throwing one inning and allowing one run.

Juvenile Suspect Hospitalized After Robbing Gas Station

A juvenile suspect has been hospitalized after robbing a west side gas station. On Tuesday, June 06, 2018 at approximately 2:17am, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Circle S Mart located at 131 South Red Bank Road upon report of an attempted robbery.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that a group of three juveniles entered the store and attempted to use the ATM to acquire cash. When the ATM failed to work, one of the juveniles became angry with the clerk and demanded cash from the register. The clerk refused and the juvenile suspect forced his way behind the counter and attempted to grab the register. The suspect also damaged a display and took merchandise. The clerk placed the suspect in a head lock and drug him into the parking lot.

All three juveniles fled and were apprehended by responding deputies. While fleeing, the juvenile suspect was found to have fallen off the retaining wall behind Lowe’s. He was transported to Deaconess and was later found to have a broken back.

Two other juveniles who were with the suspect were interviewed and found to have no idea the suspect intended to rob the store. Both juveniles tried to get the suspect to leave after he began to get upset with the ATM.

When released from the hospital, the suspect will be charged with: Attempted Robbery, Criminal Mischief, Battery and Theft.

Suspect Wanted After Late Night Armed Robbery

Evansville Police are looking for a suspect, after a late night robbery on the city’s east side.  According to a police report, officers were called to the White Castle at the intersection of Morgan Avenue and I-69 just before 11:30 Monday night.
The victim says while taking out the trash through the back door the suspect put a gun to the employee’s head and forced him back inside.  Police say, the suspect then made the manager open the safe, and took an unknown amount of cash, before fleeing on foot.
A K-9 unit was called in but was unable to locate the suspect.  Stay with 44News for updates on this story.

“IS IT TRUE” JUNE 6, 2018

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE ” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE that several months ago when the City of Evansville put the Locust Street parking garage up for sale, the City County Observer literally ridiculed the asking price and the appraisal that they used to establish the price of $1.3 Million?…we even opined that given the number of spaces and the rate with a historical occupancy of less than 50% that the value would be somewhere between ZERO and $500,000 and unless there was a specific benefit to a buyer that the value as an investment is negative?…they finally sold the parking garage and the CCO analysis has been validated by the sale price that was actually gotten?

IS IT TRUE that to build a 500 place parking garage would cost roughly $10,000,000 but this one is under contract for a paltry $250,000 and the City of Evansville is lucky to get that?…the buyer is Evansville Health Realty that wants to control parking for the new Indiana University Medical School that the City ponied up more than $50 million to get?…the deal also will allow parking in the tower after hours and for Ford Center events?…delusion met reality when a deal got done and the reality is that parking towers in downtown Evansville are not even a remote case for private investment?…when it comes to building one for $10 Million that is about as big of a pipe dream as attracting an NBA team and an NHL franchise to the Ford Center?

IS IT TRUE the former City Council President and Finance Chairman John Friend, CPA predicted three years ago that starting in 2018 the City of Evansville will be experiencing a major budget meltdown? …that John Friend, CPA also predicts that the 2019 and 2020 City of Evansville budget shall be financial disasters?  …he also predicted that the only ways the city can balance future budgets are increasing taxes, make major budget cuts and lay off employees?

IS IT TRUE that community leader and highly successful businesswoman Amy Word-Smith will be running for the At-Large seat on the Evansville City Council in 2019 as a Democrat? ….that the former Democratic Vanderburgh County Commissioner Steve Melcher will be running for the At-Large City Council seat in 2019 as a Republican?

IS IT TRUE it looks like the Vanderburgh County Democratic Party is once again becoming a pivotal force to reckon in local politics?  …a good indication of the renewal of the local Democratic party is who is sponsoring an upcoming campaign fundraiser at KC’s Marina Pointe for County Commission candidate Jeff Hatfield?  …the sponsors of this event are: Ben Shoulders, Mike Goebel, Paul Green, Ryan Hatfield, Stephanie Terry, Kathryn Martin, Dave Wedding, Eric Williams, Jonathan Weinzapfel, Rose Young, Jack McNeely, Bill Pedtke, Steve Lockyear, Scott Danks and Chuck Whobrey?

IS IT TRUE that very little has been said on how much the City of Evansville paid towards the Evansville Thunderbolts Hockey 2017-2018 team operating expenses?  … were been told that some of the 2017-2018 Evansville Thunderbolts operating expenses may have been quietly added to the Evansville/Vanderburgh County Building Authority and ERC 2018 operating budgets?

IS IT TRUE we hope that City Controller Russ Lloyd Jr will inform members of City Council on how much did it costs the taxpayers of Evansville to subsidized the Evansville Thunderbolts operating expenses during the 2017-2018 hockey season?

IS IT TRUE that all eyes will be on the At-Large City Councilman and Finance Chairman Jonathan Weaver to see how he handle the 2019 City budget requests?  …we’ve been told if he doesn’t encourage members of City Council to approve a balanced budget without raising taxes it could be the end of his political career?

IS IT TRUE one of our readers has astutely pointed out that the “Mayor’s Drug Taskforce” to reduce the illegal use of drugs should be called the “Vanderburgh/Evansville Drug Taskforce?”

IS IT TRUE that the reporting of open government activities took a major hit in 2018?  …last year Mayor Winnecke recommended that City Council eliminate the funding of WINN TV from the 2018 city budget in which they complied?  …the cutting of WINN TV from the city budget forced people to watch the live and unedited City Council meetings on their I-Phones and personal computers which turned out to be a major inconvenience which caused the viewer numbers to be drastically reduced?

ROBBING OUR AQUIFER

 “Robbing our aquifer” sounds pretty threatening but the sentiment is real in some states where the issue has become critical. An aquifer is a certain underground layer of water and it is mined through wells.
Writer Allen Best in the Mountain Town News referred to the excessive use of groundwater as  “pinching the aquifer piggy banks”, maybe more tolerable a phrase but just as serious as it relates to the long-term availability of water in an aquifer.
The Denver Post talked about “The water under Colorado’s Eastern Plains is running dry as farmers keep irrigating [the]“great American desert”.
Just recently, mega-farmers, businessmen, and homeowners in South Carolina asked that the State’s 40-year, successful government management program be expanded to avoid new conflicts occurring among users of underground water usage.
And in Indiana, avoiding water usage conflicts has caught the interest of state leaders, in particular, the Indiana Chamber.
After the 2012 drought in Central Indiana, the Indiana Chamber sponsored a study of water usage issues in Indiana. It can be found at www.indianachamber.com.
The study calls for a statewide water use management plan:
“Groundwater withdrawal has increased more rapidly than surface water diversions. The aquifers of the state are becoming increasingly important as a means of satisfying seasonal demands while controlling costs of treatment and conveyance. The water use data reported to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) suggests that this trend will continue if the climate becomes less stable and regional shortages develop.”
This past May our state legislature’s Legislative Council assigned issues of water infrastructure to the Committee of Water Infrastructure Task Force.
It is not clear that the summer study committee will include the discussion of a water usage management plan but it should, when funding drinking water infrastructure is discussed, as is one of the three committee assignments.

The Indiana Chamber study notes public outreach about the importance of a master plan as the first step. A summer study committee would be a perfect opportunity.

ROSEANNE’S DUMB TWEET

I’m burned out on Trump TV.

I don’t need to hear any more of his speeches or read one of his tweets.

I don’t want to watch every little thing President Trump does or says deciphered, misconstrued, attacked, defended, debated or analyzed on my TV every night by his many enemies and few friends.

To try to get some actual news Thursday morning I turned over to the Fox Business Network to watch Stuart Varney and the gang.

FBN covers real stuff and talks to real reporters about the ups and downs of stocks, the impact of President Trump’s trade deals on the economy and stories about the accelerating death spiral of the once-mighty Sears – the Walmart/Amazon of the 1900s.

But even on FBN I couldn’t escape Hurricane Trump, that permanent category 5 media storm that blows away or crowds out the important national and global news of every day.

The big Trump-related story of the morning was the continuing fallout over Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet about former Barrack Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett’s looks.

The tweet caused ABC to instantly cancel her highly rated “Roseanne” sitcom and led Robert Iger, the boss of parent company Disney, to call Jarrett right away to apologize.

FBN’s focus on Roseanne was a perfect example of how low the mainstream media have fallen when it comes to practicing real and important journalism.

She topped the news on virtually every channel, butthe big story of the day should have been President Trump signing the “Right to Try” bill, which finally gives terminally ill patients the federal okay to use experimental medications that have not yet been fully approved by the FDA.

Barr’s tweet was also the latest example of the double standard that permeates the liberal mainstream media’s “news” coverage of President Trump.

Barr, who made herself a juicy target for liberals by proudly calling herself a Trump supporter, was immediately canned and shamed by the leftwing media industrial complex.

Keith Olbermann, Joy Reid, Alec Baldwin, Bill Maher, Don Lemon and “Full Frontal” host Samantha Bee – all card-carrying Trump haters – have said vile, crude and crazy things about Trump and his family.

They did so with little or no harm to their careers.

It’s safe for a liberal celebrity to call Trump a racist or a Nazi, as Olbermann did, or to call Ivanka Trump “a feckless c-,” as Bee did in her monologue Wednesday.

They’ll usually get applauded, defended or given every benefit of the doubt when they pull a Roseanne. They almost never have to apologize.

For example, Joy Reid’s homophobic blogs from 10 years ago have been glossed over or excused, and this week she and former riot-starter Al Sharpton were co-hosting a town meeting on racism at MSNBC.

Christians, Sarah Palin and conservatives are fair game for nasty name calling and low blows in the liberal media.

But if you say anything about a Democrat or a progressive, especially if it has any racial connotations, you’ll be a goner overnight like Roseanne.

Her biggest mistake was openly supporting Trump. That made her a marked celebrity.

She had a history of dumb and politically incorrect tweets, and she didn’t disappoint the liberals.

What she tweeted about Jarrett was wrong, not funny – and plain stupid. But if she deserved to be sacked for what she said, then so do Olbermann, Reid and a bunch of other liberals.

But Olbermann, a sportscaster whose nasty Twitter tantrums about Trump would embarrass a three-year-old, was recently rehired for about the 12th time by Disney’s failing ESPN sports network.

Bee apologized Thursday for “crossing a line.” TBS also apologized.

That’s all they’ll have to do to amend for their sins.

Bee gets a few points for saying she was sorry, but the liberal comedian was never in danger of losing her late-night job.

She knows the new rules of political trash talk – it’s not what you say, it’s who you say it against.
