Offensive explosion pushes Otters past Grizzlies, 11-5

0

Behind an offensive outburst, the Evansville Otters beat the Gateway Grizzlies 11-5 to win the three-game series in front of 3,560 fans at Bosse Field on Thursday night.

The Otters opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Toby Thomas singled through the hole on the left side to score David Cronin and put the Otters up 1-0. Manny Cruz then came through with a two-out two-run single to put Evansville up 3-0.

Gateway got one run back in the top of the second on a Joel McKeithan RBI single.

The Grizzlies got within one in the third with an RBI base hit from Trae Santos.

The Otters pushed the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the frame on a Cronin RBI base knock.

The Otters tacked on another run in the fifth on another Cronin RBI single to take a 5-2 lead.

Gateway tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth. McKeithan picked up his second RBI hit of the day to pull Gateway to within two. Then with two outs, Artemis Kadkhodian singled home two runs to tie the game at 5-5.

The Otters responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Travis Harrison doubled home Jeff Gardner before Cruz picked up his third RBI of the game with a single to right. The inning was capped off with a Hunter Cullen single that scored Cruz and put the Otters up 8-5.

Evansville added three more runs on in the eighth for their third, three-run inning of the game. A Mike Rizzitello sacrifice fly scored Harrison which was followed by an RBI triple from Cullen. Cronin picked up his third RBI of the game when he singled home Cullen to give the Otters an 11-5 lead.

The Otters offense clicked up and down the lineup as the squad set new season highs for most runs, 11, and hits, 17, in a single game. Every player in the Otters lineup reached base at least twice.

Cruz lead the offensive charge with four hits and three runs driven in. Cronin garnered three hits as well as three RBI and Cullen added three hits of his own, including an RBI triple.

Otters starter Ty Hensley did not factor into the decision after tossing four innings and giving up two runs and punching out four.

Grizzlies starter Dakota Smith also receives a no-decision. Smith tossed 4.1 innings, giving up five runs.

Garrett Harris gets the win out of the bullpen for the Otters, his first of the year. Harris pitched two innings, allowing three runs and striking out four batters.

Patrick Boyle is dealt his second loss of the year for Gateway. Boyle allowed three runs in 1.1 innings.

The Otters will now hit the road for a three-game set against the River City Rascals in O’Fallon, Missouri.

Who’s In A Marriage? GOP Delegates Will Decide This Weekend

Staff Report
TheStatehouseFile.com

INDIANAPOLIS—Whether marriage should be between a man and a woman exclusively will be the subject of debate this weekend at the state Republican Party’s convention in Evansville.

Delegates will have a chance to vote on a proposed change to the marriage plank of its platform, state Republican Party Chair Kyle Hupfer announced Wednesday. He was hearing from delegates who were upset over the removal of a line saying directly that marriage is between a man and a woman.

“Since the release of the draft 2018 Indiana Republican Party Platform, we have received hundreds of emails and calls from every side regarding the strong families section,” Hupfer said in a statement to delegates.

“From the beginning of this months-long process, we have tried to be very clear that delegates are the ultimate and final decision makers on the language in the platform.”

Hupfer assured delegates they will have a chance to vote on language in the 2018 draft or the statement in the 2016 platform that explicitly said, “We believe that strong families, based on marriage between a man and a woman, are the foundation of society.”

Political party platforms outline the broad principles and ideas that candidates will run on in the fall. The proposed platform, which is expected to be approved by delegates Saturday, also includes language about the First Amendment, government transparency, and Second Amendment gun rights, among others.

In addition, the party will affirm its slate of statewide candidates who will be on the ballot in November, including Secretary of State Connie Lawson, Treasurer Kelly Mitchell, and Auditor Tera Klutz, who are seeking second terms.

Local Republicans React To Potential Platform Shift

Local Republicans React To Potential Platform Shift

The removal of one phrase from the potential 2018 Indiana State GOP platform is causing some splintering in the party. A passage from the 2016 Indiana GOP platform on strong families includes this line; “We believe, in strong families. We believe that strong families, based on marriage between a man and a woman, are the foundation of society.”
A proposed 2018 version gets ride of the phrase “based on a marriage between a man and a woman” and looks like this now; “ We believe in strong families. We believe that strong families are the foundation of society and that such families bring forth citizens capable of self-government, as well as properly-motivated public servants so essential for a successful republic.”
“The goal of the provision was to say we support strong families as a Republican Party and so long as a child is being raised in a loving and caring environment and being raised to be a productive member of Indiana society, then we want to support that structure” explains Indiana GOP Chairperson Kyle Hupfer.

Both of the platforms will be up for a vote during this weekend’s Indiana GOP convention in Evansville.

The new phrasing is not fully echoed in the southwestern corner of the state. Some prominent local Republicans are supporting the 2016 version.

State Senator Jim Tomes says he doesn’t understand all the uproar around this issue. He says it’s fine as it is and doesn’t need changing. When asked if this was not inclusive for gay couples trying to raise strong families, Tomes points to the rest of the passage which he says is inclusive. The full 2016 passage reads; “We believe, in strong families. We believe that strong families, based on marriage between a man and a woman, are the foundation of society. We also recognize that some families are much more diverse and we support the blended families, grandparents, guardians, single parents* and loving adults who successfully raise and nurture children to reach their full potential every day.”

Vanderburgh County GOP Chairperson Wayne Parke also agrees with the 2016 platform, but for a different reason than Tomes does. Parke says he believes in the way marriage had been defined since the bible: between one man and one woman. He says an easy fix would be to use language like partnership along with marriage.

Blood Tests Could Determine Preterm Birth Risk

0
Doctors have been trying to figure out which pregnancies will end with premature birth and they may be one step closer.

Research, funded by the March of Dimes finds biomarkers in maternal blood can accurately identify pregnant women who will deliver babies up to two months prematurely.

These blood samples also help doctors estimate gestational age and delivery date just as accurately as an ultrasound but at a lower cost.

The researchers say both tests will require validation in larger, blinded clinical trials.

Premature birth affects 15 million babies each year worldwide and is on the rise in the United States.

There Is No Moral Equivalence Between The Palestinians And Israel

There Is No Moral Equivalence Between The Palestinians And Israel

By Richard Moss MD

On May 14 2018, the 70th anniversary of the birth of the state of Israel, a modern day miracle, the US under President Donald Trump, fulfilled a promise made by Congress in the 1995 Jerusalem Embassy Act, passed by a 95-3 vote in the Senate to move our embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Jewish people.  That bill, unfortunately, came with a Presidential waiver, and every President since including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Hussein Obama promised to move the US embassy to Jerusalem but failed to do so.  Only one, Donald Trump, a modern-day Cyrus and eternal friend of Israel and the Jewish people, kept his promise.

Simultaneously, 45 miles away from the festivities in Jerusalem, at the Gaza border with Israel, the so-called “March of Return,” an annual event inaugurated in 1998 by arch-terrorist Yassir Arafat, had been going on for weeks and culminated on May 14.  It commemorated what the Palestinians call the “Nakba” or “Catastrophe,” their self-pitying interpretation of Israel Independence Day.  Fifty thousand Palestinians, most of them Hamas terrorists, attempted to breach the border with Israel, for the purpose of killing or kidnapping Jews in neighboring Israeli villages.  Women and children, the “human shields” Hamas is famous for, accompanied the marchers to maximize civilian casualties for the compliant press.

The peaceful Marchers, as instructed, brought guns, knives, pipe bombs and grenades and hid them under their clothing.  They also brought fire-kites to inflict damage on Israeli fields and crops.  More than 60 of the invading Palestinian terrorists were killed at the border, dutifully reported with glaring split-screen images of the chaos in Gaza and the events in Jerusalem, designed to tarnish the embassy event, President Trump, and Israel.

Israel abandoned Gaza in 2005, every Jew dead or alive, including those buried, were evacuated.  Israel left behind elaborate greenhouse and other infrastructure and synagogues, all of which were destroyed in scenes reminiscent of Kristallnacht.  In 2006, Palestinians in Gaza voted in Hamas over the Palestinian Authority.  In June of 2007, Hamas launched their military takeover of Gaza, killing hundreds of their Muslim brothers in the Palestinian Authority by dragging them through the streets chained to cars, throwing them off roofs, or shooting them in the head in front of their wives and children.

Hamas is a terrorist organization, recognized as such by the US and the European Union.  They call openly for the destruction of the state of Israel and do not recognize the right of Israel to exist within any borders.  They are the Palestinian offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood and as such do not seek only the destruction of Israel but all of Christendom and Western civilization including the US, and the establishment of a global caliphate.  Since taking over Gaza, they have done nothing to help their citizens build the institutions of a civil society, to promote normal democratic discourse, or to develop a free market economy, preferring instead welfare dependency based on international aid.  In the process, they have inflicted great suffering on their citizens, running what is in effect an open-air prison state for 2 million people.  There are high unemployment and poverty, poor sanitation, and inadequate healthcare.  Gaza, with its proximity to Israel’s high-tech economy, ports, trade, beaches, and tourism, and a willingness by the nations of the world, business interests, and aid-organizations to help them develop their private sector, should have been Singapore on the Mediterranean.  Instead, it is Afghanistan.  Israel blockades Gaza because Hamas is an Iranian backed terrorist organization that engages in acts of terror.  They use their assets and plentiful aid to build tunnels, fire missiles at Israeli civilians, and breach borders with armies of armed terrorists to kill, main, and kidnap.  Egypt blockades them for the same reason.

Israel is a first world nation that provides for its citizens the highest standard of living in the Middle East, equivalent to that of Western Europe.  It is an open democracy governed consensually by the rule of law, with human rights, free speech, religious freedom, a free press, and a world-class free market economy.  It boasts the best hospital, universities, museums, and symphonies in the world, and leads the planet in any number of cutting-edge technologies.  Its more than one million Israeli-Arab citizens are the freest Muslims in the Middle East.  None are interested in joining their Muslim brethren under the benighted Palestinian Authority or Hamas, preferring instead to keep their citizenship in the Jewish State – for good reason.

Hamas, on the other hand, like its secular terrorist counterpart in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), the Palestinian Authority, are corrupt, kleptocratic, genocidal extremists.  Of all the nationalist movements around the world, the Palestinians, Hamas or the PA, are the least deserving of a state – and should not be given one.  The world scarcely needs another dysfunctional, terrorist regime.  There is no difference between either of them and ISIS or Al-Qaeda except that for “intersectional” and anti-Semitic purposes, they enjoy good press from a left-dominated media – as long as it is Jews engaging them.

The Assad regime, for example, in the ongoing Syrian Civil War, have killed thousands of Palestinians in the Yarmouk Refugee Camp in Damascus, the largest Palestinian refugee community in Syria, transforming it into a “death camp,” engaging in wanton acts of barbarity far worse than anything Israel has ever committed.  But you never heard about this because it involved Arabs killing Arabs – not Jews, and therefore of no interest to the Left because it doesn’t fit their narrative.

There is one card the Palestinian Jihadists know they can always play.  That is the support and positive spin of their egregious behavior by the international left including the media, the EU, UN, the US Democrat Party, and many liberal-leftist American Jews and their various anti-Zionist organizations (J-Street, Jewish Voice For Peace, and many others).

They will discredit the Israelis, delegitimize them, hold them to an impossible double standard, and continually advance the Hamas narrative of brutal IDF soldiers cutting down innocent, defenseless Palestinian Muslims – despite Israel has the most moral and honorable military in the world, one that goes well beyond any other fighting force to protect innocent life, often at huge costs to its own soldiers.

The media and their political functionaries thus create and perpetuate the crisis.  By supporting the Jihadist narrative, they encourage more of the same and avoid putting pressure on Palestinians to create a functioning, viable state.  The media and the rest of the anti-Israel cabal can be relied on to defend genocidal Islamic terrorists.

Hamas sees dead Palestinians as a photo-op.  No media, no dead Palestinians.  Yes, our media and their allies have blood on their hands, rivers of blood, most of it Palestinian.  It is they, not Israel, who prolong the agony, suffering, and death.
