Several new staff and coaches join Purple Aces

In preparation for the 2018-19 school year, the University of Evansville Athletics Department has announced several staff and coaching additions.  Below is a full list and information on the new additions.

Brett Bentley – Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach

Bentley joins the Purple Aces following a pair of banner years as head coach at Adams State in Alamosa, Colo.

In 2017, Bentley’s side went on to break program records established and just narrowly missed out on the program’s first conference tournament appearance, finishing with a 7-10-1 record. For the second straight year the Grizzlies were honored by being ranked in the United Soccer Coaches South Central Region’s Top 10, with the 2017 team being ranked for six straight weeks.  One of the main reasons for the regional recognition was the team’s success against foes that have a history of getting the better of the Adams State team.

In his first season in 2016, Bentley got to work quickly, building one of the best men’s soccer teams in Adams State program history. The 2016 Grizzlies tied the then program-best mark for wins in a season with six. The exceptional first year concluded with numerous school records being broken.  For the first time in program history two players were awarded with RMAC All-Conference Honors. Additionally, the team broke records for goals (25), goals per game (1.39), assists (19), assists per game (.94), shots on goal (102), shot percentage (.130) and penalty kicks awarded (3) in a single season.

In addition to being the Grizzlies head coach, Coach Bentley has served as an assistant coach with the Southern California Seahorses of the Premier Developmental League (PDL).  The PDL is considered the 3rd division in the United States Soccer Leagues Professional Pyramid.  Labeled the “Path2Pro”, the PDL is an amateur league designed for elite, under 23 aged players who are pursuing a professional career in soccer.

Before joining Adams State, Bentley served in coaching roles at Lubbock Christian University (Texas) (2015), Northwest Christian University (Ore.) (2010-15), Corban University (2009-10), the Cascade Surge (2008-09), and Grand Canyon University (2007). His extensive background with the sport also positioned him as the training director and head coach for the Keizer Soccer Club from 2009-14.

As a player, Bentley played for the Region IV Olympic Development Team, the University of California-Riverside, and Yavapai Junior College before finishing his collegiate career at Corban University. He spent three seasons playing for the Cascade Surge (Salem, Ore.) of the Premier Developmental League in the USL, one season in which he doubled as a player and coach. Additionally, Bentley spent time playing and living in Germany, spending time with AFC Waldorf, VFL Kircheim, and SC Geislingen.

Bentley holds a B.S. degree in Psychology from Corban University, a Premier Diploma from the NSCAA, and a B License from the United States Soccer Federation.

Bentley and his wife, Kara, in Evansville.

In 2009, Livingston began his collegiate career at Brescia University in nearby Owensboro, Kentucky. During his time at Brescia he was selected All-Conference, led the conference in assists and captained the team.

In 2011, Livingston transferred to Saint Thomas University in Miami, Florida. During his two-year spell at STU, he captained the team winning back to back Sun Conference Regular Season Championships in 2011 & 2012. In two seasons, he was selected All-Conference and Academic All-Conference. He was also recognized by the wider Athletic community as he was the recipient of the Saint Thomas University Silver Bobcat Award- given to the student athlete who best embodies the NAIA five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

After college, Livingston continued his soccer career captaining Miami United of the NPSL during their inaugural season in 2012. In 2013, he was then given the chance graduate to the professional level of the game briefly representing Queens Park F.C. back in his native Scotland. Choosing to seek another challenge he then moved to Denmark where he spent time with AB Copenhagen of the Danish 1st Division before finding a home with Jammerbugt FC of the Danish 2nd Division. Following the conclusion of the 2014 season, due to an injury, Livingston decided to retire from playing and focus on his coaching career.

Mesker Park Zoo Welcomes Giant Anteater

0

Mesker Park Zoo is happy to announce the addition of new resident, a male Giant anteater. The anteater (“Mr. Pickles”) was born at Potawatomi Zoo in November 2016 and is currently on exhibit in the Zoo’s South America section.

“Mesker Park Zoo has not had this species in over 50 years. They’re an amazing species with some unique adaptations,” says Erik Beck, Zoo Director. “Mr. Pickles is a great addition to our zoo family and we can’t wait for our visitors to meet him.”

Giant anteaters range from 60-90 pounds and are found in the tropical forest and grasslands areas of South America. These animals do not have teeth and use their long tongues to feed on ants and termites – approximately 30,000 each day.

It is estimated that there are fewer than 5,000 remaining in the wild. Their habitats are threatened by urbanization and habitat loss, roadkills, hunting and fires.

Blood donations are a life-saving gift given by volunteer donors, who help all kinds of patients going through planned treatments and unexpected interventions. The need for donations is greatest during the summer when schools are out and people travel, which is why Indiana Blood Center is urging the public to donate blood on June 15 and throughout the next few months.

Caring for Veterans

0

According to Nikki Presley, Local Recovery Coordinator with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the best thing we can do for our returning veterans is to “welcome them home with an educated and collaborative community of family, friends and professionals.” In an effort to achieve this goal of better care for veterans, the Marion VA and Evansville Health Care Center are collaborating with the University of Southern Indiana and the Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center to host a VA Mental Health Summit and Workshop on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. This free event for veterans and health professionals will begin at 8 a.m. CDT at Carter Hall in University Center West at USI.

“Most military veterans and their dependents utilize at least some health care services outside of the Veterans Administration, so it is critically important that the VA and community providers collaborate,” said Joel Matherly, manager of the Veteran, Military & Family Resource Center at USI. “Our goal is to provide veteran-centered, recovery-oriented care, especially in the area of mental health.”

During the morning summit, there will be a resource fair beginning at 7:30 a.m., followed by several presentations from regional experts. Topics will include mental health transitions, women’s health, education and employment, and information on VA programs.

In the afternoon, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., there will be a suicide awareness workshop focusing on suicide prevention, combating the opioid epidemic, and area counseling programs.

The event includes free breakfast, lunch and an opportunity to earn continuing education credit.

To register, call 812-464-1989 or visit USI.edu/outreach/veterans/2018-mental-health-summit/.

For programming questions and assistance, please contact Nikki Presley, Department of Veterans Affairs, at 812-474-3570 or email Nikki.Presley@va.gov.

USI Softball coaches earn national honor

0

University of Southern Indiana Softball Head Coach Sue Kunkle and Assistant Coaches MacKenzi Dorsam and Lexi Reese have been collectively named the NCAA Division II Softball National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association in an announcement Wednesday. The award marks the first time in program history that USI Softball coaches have garnered the distinction and the fourth time in school history that a USI coach/coaching staff has earned such a distinction.

Led by Kunkle, the Screaming Eagles captured the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship, its second straight Midwest Region title, and its first Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship since 1998. The national title also was the fourth team title in school history and the first by a women’s sport.

USI finished the year with a 41-23 overall record and a 15-13 mark in GLVC play during the 2018 season. The Eagles reached the 40-win plateau for the third time in program history and posted a 14-1 record in the postseason, including a 5-0 mark at the NCAA II Softball Championship. USI also obtained its first-ever No. 1 ranking as the Eagles were the unanimous No. 1 team in the final NFCA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll.

Kunkle, in her 17th year at the helm of the USI Softball program, became the first coach in school history to amass 500 career wins at USI. The two-time GLVC Coach of the Year saw her career record at USI improve to 513-361-1 (.587).

Under Kunkle, USI has qualified for the last four NCAA II Tournaments and five of the last six.

Dorsam concluded her third year with the Eagles’ coaching staff and second as the Eagles’ top assistant after serving as a graduate assistant in 2016. She was the GLVC Player of the Year in her final season with the Eagles’ in 2015.

Reese finished her first season as a graduate assistant on the Eagles’ coaching staff after stellar three-year playing career as the Eagles’ shortstop. She was an All-GLVC honoree and a three-time Academic All-GLVC honoree during her playing career with the Eagles.

USI’s staff also consisted of volunteer pitching coach Brooke Harmening, who was an All-GLVC hurler for the Eagles from 2012-15.

Massa letter gives Holcomb 60 days to pick 3 Marion Superior judges

0

Olivia Covington for www.theindianalawyer.com

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb now has 60 days to select three new Marion County judges after the committee created to interview judicial candidates formally submitted its recommendation of nine finalists to fill three upcoming Superior Court vacancies.

Indiana Supreme Court Justice Mark Massa, writing on behalf of the Marion County Judicial Selection Committee, submitted the committee’s statutorily required letter concerning the nine finalists to Holcomb on Wednesday. The 14-member committee — created in 2017 to replace former slating election system voided by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals — met in late May to interview 40 applicants to fill the vacancies that will open when Democratic judges Becky Pierson-Treacy and Thomas Carroll and Republican Judge Michael Keele retireat the end of the year.

By statute, the committee must recommend three candidates to fill each judicial vacancy. Because three vacancies will open up this year, committee members were required to select nine finalists.

Holcomb, a Republican, has 60 days from Wednesday to select the three new judges. He is also in the midst of a 60-day period to select Indiana’s next Court of Appeals judge.

Here’s a look at the qualifications the Judicial Selection Committee identified in the nine finalists:

Candidates to replace Keele

Each of the three candidates named to fill Keele’s vacancy has a background in public defense work. Magistrate Jason Reyome, who currently presides over the recently created Initial Hearing Court, began his career at the Marion County Public Defender Agency while also co-founding a private firm that represented indigent and underserved clients. Reyome has conducted pro bono programs for refugees served by the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic and has employed bilingual attorneys and paralegals to reach the Spanish-speaking community.

On the bench of the Initial Hearing Court, Reyome helped implement a new method and location where initial hearings can be held and search warrants can be processed for the major felony and misdemeanor courts, a change that Massa said has helped ease jail overcrowding. He is also a member of the Marion County Community Corrections Advisory Board and is a frequent lecturer on legal ethics and professionalism.

Like Reyome, Jennifer Harrison began her legal career as a Marion County public defender, handling cases ranging from misdemeanors to major felonies. Her career has included extensive litigation experience, Massa said, including six murder trials.

In 2017, the former public defender moved to Lewis and Wilkins and switched to civil litigation. Outside of the courtroom, Harrison is a board member of Drug Free Marion County and a graduate of the Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series.

Unlike the other two candidates to replace Keele, Magistrate Geoffrey Gaither’s legal career began with a clerkship for the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Gaither then worked as a solo practitioner and for both the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and the Public Defender Agency.

Gaither was appointed a juvenile magistrate judge in 1995 and has spent the ensuing years hearing juvenile delinquency cases, termination of parental rights cases and adoption matters. He is also the presiding judge of the Dual Status Court, which serves children involved in delinquency cases and Indiana Department of Child Services proceedings. Gaither also is a graduate of the Indiana Judicial College and is the founder of the Young Women’s Empowerment Conference and the Male Mentoring Conference.

Candidates to replace Pierson-Treacy

Magistrate Judge Marshelle Dawkins Broadwell has spent almost the entirety of her career in public service, beginning as a Marion County public defender before becoming a litigation attorney for the City of Indianapolis. Broadwell then spent one year in private practice before being named a master commissioner, and later a magistrate judge, in the Marion Superior Court. Her docket consists of domestic violence criminal cases, civil and domestic relations matters and custody disputes.

Broadwell’s legal involvement includes work with the Judicial Conference’s Protection Order Committee and the Indianapolis Bar Association. She is also an active volunteer for Boy Scouts of America, a position she uses to promote civic involvement.

Charnette Garner joined Indiana’s legal community after working in Missouri, where she was an assistant attorney general in that state’s Attorney General’s Office. Garner then returned to Indiana to work at the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, where she became supervisor of the D Felony Division. She was recruited to the United States Attorney’s Office in 2014, but she returned to the MCPO in 2015 to become chief counsel.

Garner is heavily involved in bar associations, including the Marion County Bar Association and the Indianapolis Bar Association, as well as the National Black Prosecutors Association. She is also a member of the Pike Career and STEM Center’s Criminal Justice Advisory Board, which strives to help Marion County students better understand the criminal justice system.

After spending a short amount of time as a solo practitioner, Terrance Tharpe began working in the MCPO in 2004 and was eventually promoted to chief felony firearms prosecutor and assistant supervisor in the felony narcotics unit. Tharpe then served as a clerk for Indiana Court of Appeals Judge Rudolph Pyle before accepting his current position as staff counsel for GEICO.

Tharpe’s legal career began when he attended Indiana University Maurer School of Law as an Indiana Conference for Legal Education Opportunity Fellow, and as an attorney he has served as president of the Marion County Bar Association. During his tenure as bar president, Tharpe guided the organization through the Midwest Black Law Student Annual Association regional conference, which it hosted in 2015.

Candidates to replace Carroll

The next person to hold Carroll’s seat on the bench will have some judicial experience, as each of the three finalists named to replace him currently serves as Marion County magistrate judges. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Marchal currently serves in the criminal and civil divisions of the Marion Superior Court, presiding over major felonies, domestic relations and civil collections cases. Before being named a master commission and magistrate judge, Marchal worked briefly for the Marion County Public Defender Agency before representing criminal defense, juvenile law, medical malpractice and general tort litigation at a private firm.

Marchal’s legal service involves multiple board memberships, including the Marion County Community Corrections Advisory Board, the Criminal Benchbook Committee and the Jury Committee. On the Jury Committee, Marchal serves as the only magistrate judge to have ever been appointed.

Magistrate Judge Mark Jones currently presides over a criminal and civil docket in the Marion Circuit Court. His prior work included time at the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, a civil practice while at a private firm, and a stint as a staff attorney for the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission. Jones also returned to the MCPO to serve as the senior deputy and chief deputy prosecutor before ascending to the bench.

Like Marchal, Jones serves on multiple committees, including the Civil Benchbook Committee, the Marion County Court Technology Committee and the Indiana State Bar Association’s Grievance Committee, among others. He is also a community mentor and volunteer for organizations that serve local youth and ex-offenders re-entering society.

Magistrate Judge Danielle Gaughan’s judicial service began in 2002, when she was named a master commissioner in the Marion Superior Court after working in the Marion County Public Defender Agency. AG Curtis Hill commends federal court for respecting federalism, blocking Waters of the United States Rule

Attorney General Curtis Hill today applauded a decision by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia to grant a preliminary injunction blocking the 2015 Waters of the United States (WOTUS) Rule for Indiana and 10 other states.

“This rule, a product of the Obama years, infringes on the states’ rightful authority to regulate land and water resources within their own borders,” said Attorney General Hill. “I hope this preliminary injunction foreshadows a final resolution that properly upholds the principles of American federalism. Going forward, my office will continue to stand against federal overreach.”

A complaint filed by Indiana and the 10 other states stipulated that the 2015 WOTUS Rule violates the Clean Water Act and the Administrative Procedure Act. In its order issued June 8, the court agreed that if the WOTUS Rule became effective, the states would suffer irreparable harm in the form of both a “loss of sovereignty and unrecoverable monetary losses.” The court concluded that blocking the WOTUS Rule also favors the public interest because it saves “farmers, homeowners, and small businesses” from having to “devote time and expense to obtaining federal permits … to comply with a rule that is likely to be invalidated.”

The WOTUS Rule, purported to protect the environment, would have taken jurisdiction over natural resources from states and put it in the hands of federal agencies. These resources included almost any body of water, such as isolated streams, hundred-year floodplains and roadside ditches.

The 11-state coalition that filed the complaint also includes Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

In light of the district court’s order and an earlier injunction granted by the U.S. District Court for North Dakota, federal courts have now issued injunctions against the 2015 WOTUS Rule in favor of 24 states.
