Purple Aces 2018 Volleyball Schedule Unveiled

0

Aces Look To Build On Success Of Last Season

Following a successful 2017 campaign that saw the University of Evansville volleyball team double its win total from 2016, the Purple Aces look to build on that success as they prepare for the upcoming season.

“UE Volleyball is looking forward to the challenging schedule that we have this year. We have designed a progressive load that will lead us to a very tough and improved MVC,” UE head coach Manolo Concepcion said.  “Our non-conference schedule is highlighted by four Power 5 games that include home matches against teams like OVC Champion Austin Peay, and for the second year in a row, Big Ten state rival Indiana University (which previously to last year, it had never happened before).”

“Then, to have the opportunity to play not one, but two, possibly top 25 teams like Ohio State and Dayton, will prepare us to compete against the higher ranked teams in our conference,” he added.  “Our goal is to provide our roster with the highest level of play, recognizing that our conference continues to be one of the best in the nation.”

Opening the year for the Aces is a trip to Macomb, Ill. for the Leatherneck Invitational on August 24-25.  Last year, Evansville also opened the year at the tournament and went a perfect 3-0 on its way to the championship.  This year’s field includes host Western Illinois, Fairleigh Dickinson and Tennessee Tech.

Home play begins on Tuesday, August 28 with Southeast Missouri State coming to Meeks Family Fieldhouse.  The Redhawks earned a 3-2 win over UE last year after the Aces won a 3-2 decision in 2016.

Following the home opener, UE travels to Elon, N.C. for the Phoenix Classic.  Taking place on August 31 and September 1, the event features Elon, Gardner-Webb and North Carolina Central.  The host Phoenix posted a 16-16 mark in 2016.

Another big home match is on tap Sept. 4 as UE welcomes Indiana University.  It marks the third season in a row that the schools have met and the second consecutive home meeting for UE.  Last year, the Hoosiers and Aces squared off in the Meeks Family Fieldhouse grand opening.  Four days later, the annual Dunn Hospitality Tournament will take place at Austin Peay and Northern Kentucky come to town.  The Governors had a strong campaign as they were 30-6 on their way to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship in 2017.  They earned the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament where they played at UCLA in the opening round.

A 4-match homestand comes to an end on Sept. 11 when UE faces Tennessee State.  Non-conference play wraps up on Sept. 14-15 when UE heads to Dayton, Ohio to take part in the Flyer Invitational.  A stacked field features host Dayton along with Ohio State and Tennessee.  Dayton was 23-8 last season and a strong 30-2 in 2016.  As part of that season, the Flyers earned the 2016 Dunn Hospitality Invitational championship.  OSU is coming off of a 15-16 record last year while the Volunteers were 12-15 in 2017.  Evansville took on Tennessee in a home-and-home series in 2014 and 15.

Missouri Valley Conference action commences on Friday, Sept. 21 with a home weekend against Loyola and Valparaiso.  Loyola is coming off of a 5-24 record while Valpo enjoyed a 17-16 mark in the inaugural season in the MVC.  The first conference road tilt is set for Monday, Sept. 24 with a trip to Des Moines, Iowa to take on Drake.  The Bulldogs are coming off of a 23-10 season that saw them go 12-6 in the league.

That weekend, UE heads to central Illinois for road matches at Illinois State and Bradley.  The Redbirds went 22-13 and 13-5 in conference play to earn a berth in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship where they topped IUPUI in the opening round.  The Braves were 10-22 overall and 3-15 in the league in 2016.

UE is back home on Oct. 5-6 for contests against Southern Illinois and Missouri State.  SIU was 6-23 last year while the Bears posted a 28-6 overall mark and a perfect 18-0 league record.  The Bears won the conference tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Another tough match is on tap on Oct. 8 as UE heads to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on UNI.  The Panthers were 27-9 in 2017 while going 15-3 in conference play.  They earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament where the beat Louisville in the first round.  The first half of conference play wraps up with a home match against Indiana State (11-21, 8-10 MVC in 2017) on Saturday, Oct. 13.

It is back to the road on the 19th and 20th with contests at Valparaiso and Loyola before the month of October is completed with tilts against Bradley and Illinois State on the 26th and 27th.  November begins with three road matches starting with a weekend at Missouri State and SIU on Nov. 2 and 3.  The final road matchup takes place in Terre Haute when the Aces face the Sycamores on Friday, Nov. 9.

AG Curtis Hill Joins Letter Supporting SCOTUS Nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh

0

Attorney General Curtis Hill has joined attorneys general from 25 other states in a letter urging the U.S. Senate to quickly confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh as the next justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Judge Kavanaugh understands well that the proper role of the judiciary is to interpret rather than enact the law,” Attorney General Hill said. “Rather than following ideological and philosophical whims, Judge Kavanaugh will work to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution as it is written.”

President Donald Trump nominated Judge Kavanaugh on July 9. In their letter, the 26 attorneys general praise Judge Kavanaugh as someone well-equipped to fill the role that would be entrusted to him on the nation’s highest court.

“Judge Kavanaugh is an outstanding jurist with a proven commitment to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law,” the letter states. “We have no doubt that he possesses the qualifications, temperament, and judicial philosophy to be an excellent Associate Justice.”

The letter also states that Judge Kavanaugh would help provide a check against federal overreach.

“(W)e have a special interest in ensuring that the federal government respects the important role of the States in crafting and tailoring regulatory policy on matters of local concern,” the letter states. “Federal judges . . . must respect principles of federalism and the balance of power reflected in our Constitution. We are confident that Judge Kavanaugh appreciates that balance, and that he will protect the prerogatives of the States to manage their own regulatory framework.”

Eagles announce men’s basketball signings

0

The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team announced the addition of four players to the roster for 2018-19. The Screaming Eagles have signed six-foot-five junior guard Kobe Caldwell (Bowling Green, Kentucky), six-foot-seven junior forward/center Hugues Mbumba (Lubumbashi, Congo), five-foot-seven junior guard Braden Fitzjerrells (Mt. Vernon, Illinois), and six-foot-six freshman guard/forward Glen Rouch (Boonville, Indiana).

Caldwell is a transfer from the University of Utah where he started four of 27 games and averaged 11.3 minutes per game for the Utes. He had a season-high nine points versus Oregon State University after sinking a trio of three-point field goals.

“We are excited to add another perimeter shooter that can score and guard multiple positions on defense,” said USI Head Coach Rodney Watson. “Kobe is a strong and versatile guard that gives us the ability to attack from four angles. He has played against the top competition in the country and will be a lead guard that pushes the ball with length and vision.”

Prior to playing for Utah, Caldwell spent a season at Lewis & Clark Community College and averaged 9.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in 2015-16. He also was a former Mr. Basketball candidate at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he averaged 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 5.7 assists as a senior.

Mbumba comes to USI after a pair of seasons at Vincennes University. He averaged 3.5 points and 3.9 rebounds during his sophomore season and 37 games after posting 2.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in 29 games as a freshman.

“Hugues provides a big inside presence that can protect the rim, rebound and get us power baskets,” said Watson. “He comes from a great basketball program at Vincennes University where he was well coached by Todd Franklin.”

The third junior transfer is Fitzjerrells, who comes to USI after one season at Southwestern Illinois College. He averaged 13.7 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game in 29 games as a sophomore in 2017-18.

Watson said, “Braden defines tough. He has always been a scorer, but it is his willingness to do the dirty work that has made him a college player. I am excited to watch him pick up full court next season.”

Fitzjerrells, who began his collegiate career at Lindenwood University-Belleville and averaged 7.2 points, 2.6 assists, and 1.3 rebounds in 27 games, was a three-sport letterwinner at Mt Vernon High School (Mt. Vernon, Illinois). He was named second-team All-State by AP and IBCA in 2015 and honorable mention All-State by AP and third-team All-State by IBCA in 2014.

Rouch, a USI Presidential Scholar, joins USI and begins his collegiate career after completing his career at Boonville High School as the all-time leading scorer (1,518 points) and averaging 22.5 points and 7.0 rebounds as a senior. He was a three-time honorable mention All-State and All-Big 8 selection (2016, 2017, 2018).

“We are happy that Glen is joining our program,” said Watson. “He is a six-foot-six shooter and is a USI Presidential Scholar with his best days clearly ahead of him.”

The four newcomers join previously announced freshman guard/forward Chance Coyle (Bloomington, Indiana). Coyle earned his second All-State selection as a senior at Bloomington South High School while he was on his way to becoming the Panthers’ all-time leading scorer.

AG Curtis Hill announces record amount collected at Columbus drug takeback

0

Attorney General Curtis Hill announced today that a drug takeback event in Columbus on July 12 produced a significant haul – approximately 400 pounds of expired, unused and/or otherwise unwanted prescription drugs. The event, held at a Kroger store, was a collaborative effort by the Office of the Attorney General, Indiana State Police, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office and the Columbus Police Department. The 400 pounds was a record amount for a single event and brings the total collected by the office this year to 1,463 pounds.

Keeping old medication puts families at risk, which is why it’s important to dispose of unused or leftover medication. Drug takeback events help Hoosiers properly dispose of prescriptions –preventing accidental poisoning, overdose, illegal use, identity theft and contamination of water resources.

“Abuse of prescription medicine is a big part of our overall drug crisis,” Attorney General Hill said. “Across the United States, more than 6 million people abuse controlled prescription drugs. Here in Indiana, nearly 1 in 20 Hoosiers report having used opioid pain relievers for non-medical uses, and a majority of abused medication comes from family and friends of users. We’re doing good work whenever we get these drugs out of people’s medicine cabinets and properly discarded.”
