Diving, Breaststroke Shine Again in Prelims

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Two-time reigning platform champion and Indiana senior Carson Tyler will try to make it three consecutive championships in the event to close his illustrious career Saturday (March 29) night at the 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships inside the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

One competitor standing in his way is classmate and the similarly well-decorated Quinn Henninger, joining him in the championship final. The pair will look to repeat the one-two finish they earned on the 3-meter springboard Friday night.

Indiana will send nine Hoosiers to Saturday’s final session of the NCAA Championships with six in championship finals and three in ‘B’ finals. Additionally, junior and reigning NCAA 1,650-yard freestyle champion Zalán Sárkány will swim the fastest heat of the mile, the event kicking off the session at 9 p.m. ET. IU’s 400-yard freestyle relay is the No. 6 seed in the final race of the meet. The Hoosiers sit third in the team standings with 304 points, 8.5 points from second-place Cal and 64 points out of first place.

Two Hoosiers broke program records in morning heats.

Graduate student Jassen Yep shattered the 200-yard breaststroke program record by 44 hundredths, his 1:49.39 placing second in the morning. At the Big Ten Championships, Yep and senior Josh Matheny became the second and third Hoosiers ever to break 1:50 in the event, with the latter breaking Ian Finnerty’s 2019 program record with a 1:49.83 to win the conference title. Now, Yep is inching towards 1:48 and will challenge for the NCAA title as the No. 2 seed in the final.

Graduate transfer Caspar Corbeau finished fourth in the 200 breast prelims with a 1:50.07 to join Yep, and Matheny made the ‘B’ final in 1:50.41.

Junior Matt King snuck into the 100-yard freestyle consolation final with a 41.14, his personal best knocking down Olympian Blake Pieroni’s 41.16 from the 2018 championships. He’ll swim again from lane eight and then again in the 400 freestyle relay.

Vaneta Becker Shares Thoughts on Crime and Agriculture Bills

0
Fighting Violent Crime and Deadly Drugs
In recent years, communities across Indiana have experienced an increase in deadly drugs and violent crime on our streets.

Senate Bill 324 is currently making its way through the Indiana General Assembly and would increase criminal penalties for meth and fentanyl dealers. It would also require individualized bail determinations for arrestees charged with violent crimes so more scrutiny is given to whether the arrestee should be allowed back on our streets.

I supported this bill to help local law enforcement crack down on drug dealers putting dangerous substances in our communities and to help keep Hoosiers across the state safe.

SB 324 passed the Senate with bipartisan support and is now being considered by the House of Representatives.

Honoring Hoosier Farmers
For more than 200 years, Indiana has had a proud agricultural tradition.

Today, the agriculture industry contributes more than $35 billion to Indiana’s economy each year.

Last week, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture honored farms that have been owned by the same family for 100, 150 and 200 years with Hoosier Homestead Awards.

In Senate District 50, the Henry G. Wallis farms in Vanderburgh County received Centennial and Sesquicentennial awards.

Congratulations to these family farms for earning these honors and thank you for your continued dedication to Indiana’s agricultural heritage.

TALOR JOSEPH LEADS THUNDERBOLTS TO COMEBACK WIN OVER RIVERMEN

0
Evansville, In.:  In his debut between the pipes for the Thunderbolts, Talor Joseph stood tall with 28 saves on 30 shots to help Evansville rally and force overtime, where Scott Kirton scored to win the game for Evansville 3-2 over the Rivermen on Sunday afternoon at Ford Center.  The Thunderbolts’ next home game will be on Friday, April 4th against the Birmingham Bulls at 7:05pm CT.
In the first period, Peoria grabbed the opening lead as Griffen Fox deflected a shot from Kylar Fenton to give the Rivermen a 1-0 lead at 13:26.  Evansville levied a response late in the period, as Bronson Adams found some open ice inside the blue line and sniped home a shot to tie the game 1-1 at 19:20, assisted by Kirton and Nolan Dawson, the assist for Dawson being his first professional point.  Following a scoreless second period, the Rivermen regained the lead 6:53 into the third period as Mike Gelatt scored on a power play chance.  In the final minutes of regulation, Joseph was pulled for an extra attacker, and Evansville scored seconds later to tie the game 2-2 at 17:22, as Tyson Gilmour deflected a shot from Isaac Chapman, also assisted by Nolan McElhaney.  In overtime, Gelatt took a major penalty for boarding Chapman, leading to an Evansville power play for the remainder of overtime.  At 2:59, Kirton scored on a rebound from Myles Abbate and Gilmour to win the game for Evansville by a 3-2 score, simultaneously ending both Evansville’s 5-game losing streak as well as Peoria’s 5-game win streak.
Gilmour and Kirton each picked up a goal and assist, with Adams adding one goal.  In goal, Talor Joseph finished with 28 saves on 30 shots on goal, becoming the first Thunderbolts goaltender to win in his debut since Sean Kuhn on November 3, 2023, against the Macon Mayhem.  The Thunderbolts and Rivermen do not meet again this regular season but could meet in the first round of the President’s Cup Playoffs, with Peoria winning the regular season series 8-4.

Trailblazer Track and Field opens Outdoor season with busy weekend

0

St.LOUIS, Mo. and TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Vincennes University Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams opened their 2025 Outdoor seasons this past weekend.

The Blazers split the weekend between competing at the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis and the Pacesetter Invitational hosted by Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

VU opened the weekend in St. Louis and freshman Anis Abdaoui (Kairouan, Tunisia) opened the Outdoor season with a bang, taking 10th place in the 1500 meters with a final time of 3:49.79, setting a new school record in the event.

The Vincennes distance team continued with sophomore Caden Hostetler (LaGrange, Ind.) placing 166th overall in the 10,000 meters with a time of 34:50.58.

Sophomore Cody Noel (Hebron, Ind.) and freshman Lane Connaway (Carmi, Ill.) also took part in the 10k race, with Noel finishing with a time of 36:24.16 and Connaway posting a time of 36:38.22.

The men’s distance results were rounded out at the Distance Carnival by freshman Jeremy Mendez (Velpen, Ind.) and sophomore Nathan Whitehead (Vincennes, Ind.) who competed in the 5,000 meters.

Mendez came in with a final time of 16:45.36 to place 293rd overall and Whitehead placed 323rd overall with a time of 17:30.39.

The women’s distance results were led by sophomore Adi Fuller (Evansville, Ind.) who took 222nd overall in the 5,000 meters with a time of 21:18.51.

Freshman Alexis Hale (Evansville, Ind.) finished just behind Fuller in the 5k, placing 223rd overall with a time of 21:20.19.

“Friday did not have good conditions for running fast the majority of the day,” VU Interim Head Track and Field Coach Tyler Steigenga said. “Every team had to deal with a warm day that we hadn’t experienced since October that was not optimal for distance running. The winds picked up in the afternoon as well and made for some slow times in every heat. We did not have the day we were looking for for a lot of our events, but we were not alone in that.”

“Caden and Alexis had the best races in the morning,” Steigenga added. “Caden ran a very consistent effort for the entire 25 laps of the 10k. He went out in last place and kept moving up the entire race, passing over half the field. Alexis came away with a new PR in the 5k, but the time doesn’t really tell the whole story. She has improved a ton since she ran her old PR during Cross Country. She’ bound to drop a lot more time this outdoor season.”

“Anis was the highlight of the meet as he was the last distance runner to compete, four hours after the rest had run,” Steigenga said. “The weather changed a lot during that time, which resulted in conditions that were a lot more optimal for racing fast. He took advantage of it by placing 10th overall in the 49 athlete field and setting a new school record of 3:49.79, just under the old record by 0.13 seconds.”

The rest of the Trailblazer Track and Field teams headed to Terre Haute Saturday for the 2025 Pacesetter Invitational.

The VU men’s track results were headlined by the 4×400 relay team of freshmen Devin Wilson (Indianapolis, Ind.), ArTezz Butler-Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind.), Kelvin Kipsang (Kapsabet, Kenya) and sophomore Tanner Spence (Carmi, Ill.).

The VU relay team placed eighth overall with a final time of 3:33.53.

Flaherty hits walk-off home run for UE to take series over Valparaiso

0
The Purple Aces won their final game of the weekend in dramatic fashion
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – After leading for eight innings, the University of Evansville baseball team rallied back and won its final game against the Valparaiso Beacons 5-4 with a walk-off home run.
The Purple Aces led early but faced a similar situation as Saturday as Valparaiso battled back to tie the game in the top of the ninth. But UE learned from its second game of the series as the team won both the game and the series in the bottom of the ninth. Graduate catcher and pinch hitter Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) hit his first home run of the year to win the game for Evansville with two outs on the board in the 5-4 victory.
“It was a great series win at home,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll following the game. “Flaherty had a big swing of the bat to secure the series win for us. And [starting pitcher Owen] Byberg was outstanding giving us a chance in the rubber match. We need to take the momentum from this weekend and run with it.”
The Aces had a strong start to Sunday’s game as they took down the Beacons in order and scored a run in the first inning. Center fielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) scored on a wild pitch after getting on base with an error to give UE a 1-0 lead. Evansville had an almost identical second inning, starting with a three up and three down top and scoring one run in the bottom.
Rumsey recorded the Aces’ second hit of the game to score second baseman Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs HS). McConnell moved around the bases in three at-bats as he got on base with a walk, moved to second on a balk, and was put on third by a flyout from right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC). UE followed the established formula in the third inning, facing the minimum batters in the top of the inning and scoring a run in the bottom.
Starting pitcher Owen Byberg (Barrie, Ontario) had a strikeout in every inning while adding two in the third for four strikeouts in only 33 pitches. While in the bottom of the third after a video review, Taubert connected on his fifth long ball of the season out to left center. The solo home run from the right fielder was the third of the series for Evansville after one in both Friday and Saturday’s games.
Valparaiso had its first hit of the game in the top of the fourth, but the Aces took the next two batters down in order to go back on offense. UE had its first empty inning in the bottom of the fourth as all three batters had putouts in the field. Evansville’s offense stayed quiet for three innings while the Beacons’ bats began to get going.
It was déjà vu for the Aces after the fifth inning as Valpo began to score in the back half of the game. The Beacons added a run in the sixth and seventh innings to make it a one-run game. UE was able to get back a run in the bottom of the seventh as third baseman Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Forest Park HS) led off with a triple to right center. Howard then scored right after as Rumsey picked up his second RBI with a sacrifice fly.
But Valparaiso answered right back with a solo home run to lead off the eighth and again make it a one-run game. Evansville didn’t add an insurance run in the bottom of the inning as catcher Kaleb Wilkey (Manhattan, Ill. / Lincoln-Way West HS) was stranded at second after hitting a double just past the shortstop. The Beacons tied the game up in the top of the ninth as they strung together a single and a double for their fourth run.
After the tying run scored, the Aces were able to strand Valpo’s go-ahead run with a strikeout from reliever Parker MacCauley (Paducah, Ky. / Tennessee Tech) and a ground out to McConnell. UE needed a run as they returned to offense to avoid its third extra innings game of the season.
Evansville’s first two batters in the ninth recorded outs, bringing the ninth down to Flaherty’s at-bat. Flaherty did not start on Sunday but instead entered as a pinch hitter after shortstop Brodie Peart (Markham, Ontario) pitched in the eighth inning. The graduate player faced two pitches before he connected on a bomb past the left-field fence to win the game for the Aces. It was Flaherty’s first home run of the season, UE’s second of the game, and Evansville’s fourth of the weekend.
First baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) was the only Aces player with multiple hits on Sunday in front of his high school team, who were in town to watch UE while playing local baseball teams over spring break. Seven other Evansville batters recorded a hit, while Rumsey had two RBIs. On the mound MacCauley earned his first victory in an Aces uniform as he pitched 1.0 inning with a strikeout, no walks, and two hits. Byberg had the longest outing for UE at 5.2 innings, allowing only four hits and one run while striking out six batters and allowing a single walk.
Evansville hosts one more team at The Braun in its first homestand of the season. The Aces play the second game of their home-and-home series with Southeast Missouri on Tuesday evening. UE welcomes SEMO to the River City for a 6 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday, April 1.
