Deverman sets new career-high in strikeouts in loss to Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Evansville baseball team played a close game with the Missouri State Bears but ultimately fell in its first game of the weekend 6-4.
An explosive fifth inning and a career-high from two Purple Aces players weren’t enough to give UE a Friday night win at Hammons Field. Evansville’s offense had 12 hits to lead the game, bouncing back from a tough midweek matchup at Western Kentucky on Tuesday. Junior infielder Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Forest Park HS) tied his career-high with three hits to lead the Aces at the plate on Friday night. While starting pitcher Kenton Deverman (Dardenne Prairie, Mo. / Fort Zumwalt West HS) set a new career-high in strikeouts, taking down 10 batters for the UE defense.
“That’s a tough one to lose to open up the weekend,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll following the game. “There were a couple of close plays that didn’t go our way, as we had great efforts on the mound from Deverman and [reliever Max] Hansmann. The effort and energy were there, but it was not enough to get the win.”
Evansville’s bats got going early at Hammons Field as infielder Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) had the first hit of the game. But the Aces weren’t able to bring runners home early on Friday night as they stranded five in the first three innings. Meanwhile, Missouri State took an early 3-0 lead with two hits and a run in the first inning and a two-run homer in the second.
Deverman locked in on the mound for UE, striking out at least two batters in three of the next four innings. Deverman’s performance on the mound helped Evansville blank the Bears for back-to-back innings in the third and fourth. The Aces offense then exploded in the top of the fifth, batting through the entire order to take their only lead of the night.
Howard began the inning with his second single of the game to be the first of four straight UE hits. Evansville broke the shutout on a two-RBI single through the right side from outfielder Charlie Longmeier in the third at-bat of the fifth. McGinnis also got aboard with the Aces’ fourth hit in a row for his second hit of the game.
UE’s next two batters struck out, but Evansville was able to score with two outs on the board. Designated hitter Brodie Peart (Markham, Ontario) put a single into left, scoring Longmeier for the tying run. Peart’s single was followed by a double from first baseman Jake McGhee (Fenton, Mo. / Christian Brothers Academy) to give the Aces a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the inning.
The lead didn’t last long for UE, as back-to-back singles to begin the fifth for Missouri State became a tying sacrifice fly. Evansville’s defense turned its 26th double play of the season to get out of the inning with the game knotted up at four runs apiece. Howard picked up his third single to open the sixth inning but was picked off at first in the next at-bat. The Aces weren’t able to get another runner aboard in either the sixth or the seventh innings.
Deverman had his best inning on the mound in the bottom of the sixth. He struck out the side, taking all three Bears batters down in order with only 14 pitches.  The final out of the sixth inning for Deverman was his 10th of the game, a new career-high for the sophomore lefty. Deverman is the first UE pitcher to record 10 strikeouts in a game since Tyler Denu in 2023, also at Missouri State.
The bottom of the seventh inning began with two straight outs to right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC), looking to be similar to the sixth. But a double to the right corner followed by a long single to right put the Bears back in front on a close play. Evansville almost got the out at home on the fifth run, but a video review determined the tag was just behind the runner’s hand touching home plate.
Missouri State was able to add one more run in the seventh with its third hit of the inning and an error at first base. The Aces were able to get out of the inning with an infield ground out, facing a two-run deficit with only two innings left. McGhee hit his second hit of the night in the top of the eighth to take first base. But he would be the last base runner for UE as Evansville didn’t have another hit in the 6-4 loss.
Four Aces had multiple hits on the night to give UE 12 total hits in the game. Howard had three hits for the first time since February, while Longmeier, McGinnis, and McGhee had two each. Longmeier was the only batter with two RBIs while catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) led Evansville in the field with 12 putouts.
The Aces will look to even the series on Saturday afternoon in Hammons Field. First pitch for the second game of the weekend against Missouri State is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.

Murder Investigation underway in Oakland City Updated Information: Suspect Arrested

Vehicle Break-Ins Reported on UE Campus Overnight

Several vehicle break-ins occurred overnight on the University of Evansville campus, with incidents reported in multiple parking lots. Items were also taken from a vehicle near Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE). The Evansville Police Department has been notified and is actively investigating.
At UE, the safety and security of our campus community is always a top priority. We encourage everyone to stay vigilant—please lock vehicles and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight. If you see suspicious activity, contact the Office of Public Safety immediately at 812-488-2051.
The images of the suspects from last night are attached (UE credit). While they may not offer clear identification, some distinguishing features stand out like yellow shoes on one suspect and a PlayStation hoodie on another. Robbery Investigation Leads to Three Arrests

On 4/14/2025 Officers were dispatched to 5538 E Indiana St in reference to a Holdup in Progress. The caller stated they were held down and their wallet was stolen by three known subjects who had fled the scene. When officers arrived, they were provided with the first and last name of one subject, but only the first names of the remaining two subjects. Officers were provided physical descriptions of those involved along with a vehicle description and possible destination. Responding officers used this information to determine the identities of the two remaining subjects.

Aces women’s soccer alum Georgia Katsonouri continues career professionally

The Purple Aces’ former goalkeeper plays with one of the top clubs in Cyprus
LIMASSOL, Cyprus – University of Evansville alum Georgia Katsonouri (’24) has continued her career in goal at the highest level in her home country of Cyprus.
After a four-season career with the Purple Aces, goalkeeper Georgia Katsonouri is continuing her soccer journey with Apollon Ladies FC in Limassol, Cyprus. Katsonouri returned to her home country in the summer of 2024 after graduating from UE with a degree in exercise science. She joined Apollon in mid-July, helping the team to a 2024 Cypriot Super Cup win, the club’s 10th since its founding in 2007. Apollon Ladies FC also completed the treble in 2024, winning the Cypriot Championship, Cup, and Super Cup.
Along with her work on the field with Apollon Ladies FC, Katsonouri was called up to international play with the Cyprus National Team in February. With the national team in the UEFA Women’s Nations League, Katsonouri helped the team in two games against Malta and Georgia. Cyprus won both games by a goal each as Katsonouri got time in goal for the Whites and Blues. She will also be on the roster for Cyprus’ upcoming matches in May and June.
Katsonouri has had to persevere during her time away from Evansville, as she came back from a chronic groin injury that happened when she was an Ace. She says, “I’ve been through a lot of pain and setbacks with my injury. But my perseverance and the fact that I was showing up every day, no matter how I felt, got me back on the field doing what I love the most and inspiring others.”
When not in goal, Katsonouri works for AZ Sports Scholarships, a Greek company that helps student-athletes earn scholarships to attend school in North America. She is the Cyprus college recruiting representative for AZ to help students combine their passion for sports with their studies.
In her four years with UE, Katsonouri played in seven games with five starts for 534 minutes in goal. Her career average at Evansville was 0.340 goals against, 3.86 saves, .931 save percentage and 10 shots faced a game. Katsonouri collected three shutouts during her college career and had an overall record of 2-1-2.

USI hosts EIU for three-game OVC series

Friday’s series opener moved up to 4 p.m.​​​​​​​

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — University of Southern Indiana Baseball resumes Ohio Valley Conference action this weekend when it hosts Eastern Illinois University for a three-game series beginning Friday. The first pitch Friday has been moved up to 4 p.m. due to rain in the forecast.

Following the series opener Friday, the series will continue at 3 p.m. Saturday before concluding Sunday at 1 p.m. Saturday is USI Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day at the USI Baseball Field with free admission to all University staff members.

USI (19-22, 8-7 OVC) starts the weekend in fifth in the OVC standings, while EIU (21-17, 9-5 OVC) is third. The top eight teams in the OVC advance to the conference tournament at the end of the season. There are four weeks left in the 2025 OVC regular season, including this weekend.

Following the series with EIU, the Eagles return to the road for the next four games. USI will play a non-conference matchup at Illinois State University April 30 and visit the University of Tennessee at Martin for a three-game OVC series May 2-4.
