USI to host Health Professions Day for high school students October 24

The University of Southern Indiana Kinney College of Nursing and Health Professions is hosting a Health Professions Day for high school juniors and seniors exploring careers in healthcare on Friday, October 24. The day will incorporate hands-on experiences within various health professions programs, as well as interaction with USI faculty and current students.

The event, from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. in the USI Health Professions Center, will include lunch and an optional campus tour. Representatives from the following programs will lead breakout sessions: Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene; Diagnostic Medical Sonography; Food and Nutrition; Health Administration and Community Health; Health Informatics; Nursing; Occupational Therapy and Occupational Therapy Assistant; Radiology and Imaging Sciences; and Respiratory Therapy.

“The health field offers a wide variety of career paths,” says Sean Weir, Chair of the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. “Health Professions Day gives high school students the chance to see that the opportunities are limitless when they pursue one of our healthcare majors.”

Rep. O’Brien meets with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to discuss I-69 Ohio River Crossing

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 10, 2025) – State Rep. Tim O’Brien (R-Evansville) recently joined U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Gov. Mike Braun and other elected officials for a tour of the ongoing progress on the I-69 Ohio River Crossing project.

O’Brien said this is the second time he has met with Duffy to discuss the bi-state infrastructure project, whichincludes a bridge linking I-69 from Evansville to Henderson, Ky. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.

“It was an honor to welcome Secretary Duffy to Evansville and show him first-hand how the I-69 Ohio River Crossing project is progressing and demonstrate its future impact,” O’Brien said. “I met previously with Secretary Duffy in Washington, D.C., to share updates back in May. This follow-up visit highlights just how important the project is, not only for Evansville but on a national level as well.”

The tour included stops at Indiana construction sites as well as a stop in Henderson, Ky., to view progress on bridge approaches across the river.

O’Brien has been a vocal advocate for the I-69 Ohio River Crossing, saying it could open new opportunities for Hoosiers in the region.

“This is an important endeavor to better connect our region and accelerate economic growth,” O’Brien said. “I will continue to offer my support for this project through its completion and beyond, ensuring it delivers lasting benefits for our community.”

Purple Aces To Put Winning Streak On The Line At UT Martin

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women’s soccer team will put their three-game winning streak on the line on Thursday, heading to Martin, Tenn. for a clash with UT Martin. Kick-off is set for 7 PM.

Evansville won their third game in a row for the first time since 2021 last Thursday, taking down Austin Peay by a score of 1-0.

Lily Kytasaari (Platte City, Mo./Platte County) scored the lone goal of the evening, finding the back of the net in the 38thminute for her second goal in as many games.

The Purple Aces’ attack was active throughout the first half, putting five shots on goal in the first 36 minutes of action. Evansville was able to break through off a corner kick, as Ashlyn Koutsos (Cumming, Ga./West Forsyth) put a beautiful ball into the box, where Emmy Brenner (Arlington, Tenn/St. Benedict at Auburndale) nearly scored on a header. However, Kytasaari collected a clearance attempt inside the six and buried a shot to the far post to get the Aces on the board.

The second half saw the Evansville defense hold strong, withstanding 10 Austin Peay shots to preserve the shutout. Reigning MVC Goalkeeper of the Week Allie Lammers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) made three saves, including two in the final 18 minutes of play, to post her second consecutive clean sheet and run her scoreless streak to 225 minutes.

Series History 
Thursday marks the 12th all-time meeting between Evansville and UT Martin. UT Martin holds the series lead at 5-3-3. The Aces and Skyhawks met last season in Evansville, playing to a 1-1 draw.

UT Martin enters Thursday night looking for their first win of the season. The last time out for the Skyhawks came on Sunday, a 1-0 loss to 14th-ranked Memphis. UT Martin has played two other MVC opponents this season, falling to Illinois State 1-0 and Murray State 2-1.

THUNDERBOLTS SIGN FORWARD DAMON ZIMMER

Evansville, In.:  The Evansville Thunderbolts and Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jeff Bes are pleased to announce the signing of forward Damon Zimmer for the 2025-26 season.  The Thunderbolts will raise their President’s Cup Championship banner prior to their 2025-26 home opener at Ford Center on Saturday, October 25th against the Quad City Storm.
                Zimmer served as team captain at Salve Regina University in the 2024-25 season, the final of his four seasons at Salve Regina which began in 2021-22.  In 104 total regular season games, Zimmer scored 22 goals and 56 points along with a +29 rating.  The native of Camrose, Alberta played parts of four seasons in the Alberta Junior Hockey League between 2016-2020, playing briefly with the Okotoks Oilers late in 2016-17 before joining the Spruce Grove Saints for 2017-18, with whom Zimmer won the Inter Pipeline Cup as AJHL champions.  From 2018-2020, Zimmer played his two final AJHL seasons with his hometown Camrose Kodiaks.  Zimmer finished with 26 goals and 73 points in 145 regular season AJHL games before playing one final season of junior hockey in the United States with the Minot Minotauros of the NAHL, scoring 13 goals and 23 points in 53 regular season games.
                “I chose to sign with the Thunderbolts because of the winning culture portrayed by everyone in the organization,” said Zimmer on joining Evansville.  Zimmer continued: “The things I have heard about the team are nothing but glowing, great people from top to bottom and true sense of family, and I look forward to becoming part of the family!  It was also very important to me to play for an organization that has great fan support, and Evansville looks amazing in that aspect.”  Speaking on how he approaches the game on the ice, Zimmer said: “As a player, I pride myself on being a 200-foot forward who takes care of both the defensive and offensive zones and doing whatever else is needed of me to help the team succeed.”  Zimmer closed by saying: “I am excited to be fortunate enough to be a part of an amazing organization and play for an amazing fanbase. I can’t wait to get to Evansville in October!”
                On the addition of Zimmer, Head Coach Jeff Bes commented: “Damon is a big power forward who does all the little details that you don’t see, that helps the team be successful.  He is a leader, was captain of his college team, and knows what it takes to be a part of a successful team.”

UE to Host Constitution Day Panel

EVANSVILLE, IND. (09/10/2025) The University of Evansville’s (UE) Department of History, Politics, and Social Change will host a panel discussion to observe Constitution Day on Wednesday, September 17, at 4:00 p.m. in Schroeder 170 (Smythe Hall).

Titled “Is The Constitution in Danger?”, the discussion will feature insights from faculty members in the department as they explore contemporary perspectives on the U.S. Constitution.

The event is free and open to the public, and all members of the UE community are encouraged to attend.

USI finishes strong at Payne Stewart Memorial​​​​​​​

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Golf finished strong and finished ninth in the 2025-26 opening Payne Stewart Memorial in Springfield, Missouri. The tournament was hosted by Missouri State University at Twin Oaks Country Club.
 
Day 1 (36 holes):
USI was 10th of the 11 teams after the first day of the tournament, following a two-round 637 (317-320). The Screaming Eagles were ninth after the first 18 holes but dropped back to 10th following round two. Sophomore Fernanda Vera and graduate Valeria Lopez led the Eagles with each posting a two-round 154 (77-77). Vera and Lopez were tied for 32nd after the first 36 holes.
 
Day 2 (18 holes):
The Eagles improved 12 strokes, as a team, in the final round to return to the ninth with a 308 in the third 18 holes. Vera and junior Tora Timinsky tied for the team lead in the third round, each posting a 76. Freshman McKenna Lowe followed with a 78.
 
Final Results:
The Eagles shot a three-round 945 (317-320-308) as a team, finishing ninth ahead of Oklahoma City University (10th) and Western Illinois University (11th). Missouri State won its home tournament with an 866 (287-288-291).
 
Individually, Vera tied for 31st overall with a 54-hole score of 230 (77-77-76). She had 10 birdies during the tournament.
 
Lopez was close behind, tying for 35th with a 232 (77-77-78), while sophomore Brianna Kirsch was nine strokes back with a 241 (80-81-80) to place 53rd. Timinsky and Lowe rounded out the Eagles, placing 55th and 58th, respectively. Timinsky shot a 244 (83-85-76), while Lowe rounded out USI’s five with a 250 (85-87-78).
 
NEXT UP FOR USI:
USI continues the 2025-26 fall season September 15-16 by playing in The Velvet, hosted by Murray State University at Country Club of Paducah in Paducah, Kentucky. The Eagles finished 13th a year ago at The Velvet and return four of the five players who scored in the tournament.
