Vanderburgh County Surveyor Named Indiana Surveyor of the Year

Jeffrey D. Mueller, Vanderburgh County Surveyor, has been named Indiana Surveyor of the Year. The Award was presented Tuesday evening at Association of Indiana Counties Annual Banquet in Indianapolis.  Mueller was selected from 92 county surveyors in the state of Indiana.

The award is given based on a Surveyor’s accomplishments and contributions to his or her county. The County Surveyor serves at the technical advisor to the County Commissioners on the subject of county-wide drainage and development that affects county drainage. In Vanderburgh County the County Surveyor also over sees the maintenance and improvements on 80 plus miles of legal drains that carry storm water to the Ohio River and its tributaries.

Upon hearing of the Award County Commissioner Bruce Ungethiem said, “Jeff Mueller is a very thorough and detail oriented County Surveyor who keeps us informed of potential problems and helps the Board of Commissioners resolve drainage problems and disputes that occur in the County. Our jobs would be much more difficult without Jeff.”

Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave added, “Jeff Mueller aids me in getting the full story about any County Drainage issue. He keeps me fully informed on drainage and development issues that require knowledgeable decision making.”

Evansville Bar Foundation Awards Grants to Local Organizations

SEPTEMBER 19TH, 2018 MITCH ANGLE EVANSVILLE, INDIANA

Over $26,000 has been awarded to local organizations from the John L. Sander Memorial Evansville Bar Foundation.

The foundation says organizations that qualify for the grants are those that encourage and support programs designed to promote a public understanding and awareness of the law; Support an improved delivery of legal services to the community as a whole, as well as the indigent and our most vulnerable citizens; Promote activities to enhance the performance of the practicing lawyers’ professional qualifications and ethical responsibilities; Advance and promote the administration of justice.

“The Evansville Bar Foundation is proud to further John L. Sanders’ vision by awarding grants to local organizations that provide access to legal related services and programs,” says Kelly Jackson, President of the Evansville Bar Foundation.

Listed below are the groups that received grants:

Evansville African American Museum: The grant will be used for an exhibit to create awareness to the unsung champions of the women’s suffrage movement.

Holly’s House: The grant will be used for their “Think First & Stay Safe” Child Abuse Prevention Program. The primary goal of this program is to lower the incidence of child abuse by increasing student knowledge and skills relating to personal safety.

Indiana Legal Services: The grant will be used to continue the medical and legal partnership program. ILS has partnered with Southwestern Behavioral Health and ECHO Community Health Care to address the health harming legal issues faced by mutual patient clients by direct legal representation and advice, as well as training and guidance to partner staff.

Vanderburgh County CASA: The grant will be used to recruit new volunteers through an outdoor advertising campaign.

VLP – Talk to a Lawyer: The grant will be used for the telephone service that is held twice a month at which volunteer attorneys give free legal advice and for a new portable printer to support its Pro Se Navigation Clinics.

VOICES, Inc.: The grant will be used to cover printing costs for resident rights newsletters and for resident rights mailings.

William Miller Law Library: The grant will be used for the Pro Se Navigation Project to allow the librarian to offer assistance, under the supervision of an expert in pro se navigation services, to self-represented litigants on prosecuting their matters through civil processes and to allow a 4th clinic time to be added.

Youth Resources – Teen Court: The grant will be used to help fund the Vanderburgh County Teen Court program which is operated by Youth Resources of Southwestern Indiana.

EBA Access to Justice Committee: The grant will be used to help fund the Annual EBA Trivia Night, which raises money for the Volunteer Lawyer Program and the Legal Aid Society of Evansville.

EBA Diversity Committee: The grant will be used for training and education opportunities and to provide a professional speaker event Diversity Committee and programs.

The annual March of Dimes Signature Chef’s auction is just a couple months away, but there’s still time to become a sponsor or buy tickets for the event.

Each year, the March of Dimes brings some of the best chefs in the area under one roof for a night of great food and fun. Guests can sample items from some of the Tri-State’s top restaurants and bid on auction packages.

This year, the event takes place at the Tropicana in downtown Evansville Thursday, November 1st.

Proceeds from the event help the organization find answers to premature birth, infant mortality, birth defects, and other health problems.

Eagles set to visit Missouri S&T, host Bellarmine Sunday is annual “Kick for the Cure” match and Alumni Weekend

The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team hopes to get back on track and gain momentum in the GLVC when it visits Missouri University of Science & Technology Friday in Rolla, Missouri, and hosts Bellarmine University Sunday at Strassweg Field. Match time Friday at Missouri S&T is set for 5 p.m., while the kick off versus Bellarmine is noon.

The USI-Bellarmine match-up is the Eagles’ annual “Kick for the Cure” match to promote the fight against breast cancer. Admission for Sunday’s match, which also is Alumni Weekend for the Screaming Eagles, is free of charge, but donations will be accepted to help find the cure for breast cancer.

Week 4 Eagle Notes: 

Eagles splits opening GLVC weekend: The Screaming Eagles (2-3-1) started GLVC play with a dominating 3-1 victory over Drury University to begin conference action, but dropped the second half of the conference weekend on the road, 2-0, at Truman State University. USI’s offense in the win over Drury came off the feet of senior midfielder Olivia Wilde (Racine, Wisconsin), freshman midfielder Lyndsee Monac (New Brighton, Pennsylvania), and freshman midfielder Rachel Gray (Franklin, Tennessee) during the first half as the Eagles built a 3-0 lead.

Spreading the wealth on offense: In the six matches, the Eagles have six goals by six different goal scorers. Junior midfielder Courtney Spicer posted USI’s first goal of the year in the tie with Northern Michigan University, while freshman forward Madeline Weston and junior forward/midfielder Emilie Blomenkamp scored in the Eagles’ first win of 2018 versus Purdue University Northwest. Senior midfielder Olivia Wilde (Racine, Wisconsin), freshman midfielder Lyndsee Monac (New Brighton, Pennsylvania), and freshman midfielder Rachel Gray (Franklin, Tennessee) rounded out the USI 2018 scoring with the first half goals versus Drury.

Schoenstein is in his third year: USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein is in his third season as the head coach of the Eagles, producing a 19-17-7 mark and back-to-back GLVC Tournament appearances.

USI vs. Missouri S&T: The Eagles lead the Miners all-time, 10-5-0, in a series that dates back to 1996 when Missouri S&T was named the University of Missouri-Rolla. USI is 3-2-0 in the last five games, including last season’s 3-1 win at Strassweg Field.

Miners in 2018: The Miners (1-4-0, 0-2-0 GLVC) are in search of their first GLVC win of the year after falling 4-0 at home to Bellarmine University and 1-0 at Quincy University.

USI vs. Bellarmine: The Knights lead the Eagles all-time, 13-6-5, since the creation of the USI women’s soccer program in 1996. USI and Bellarmine battled to a pair of 0-0 double overtime ties in the 2017 regular season and GLVC Tournament first round. The Knights advanced after the GLVC Tournament first round tie on penalty kicks.

Bellarmine in 2018: Bellarmine (3-2-1, 1-0-1 GLVC), who visits McKendree University Friday before coming over to USI, won its GLVC opener with Missouri S&T, 4-0, before tying Maryville University, 0-0 in double overtime.

The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team concludes a road swing to Missouri with a match versus Missouri University of Science & Technology Friday in Rolla before coming home to host Bellarmine University Sunday at Strassweg Field. Kickoff Friday at Missouri S&T is 7:30 p.m.The USI-Bellarmine match-up is a 2:30 p.m. start and is the Eagles’ seventh annual Gold Game in recognition of September being Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. The Eagles will be wearing gold sock to promote awareness of pediatric cancers. Admission to Sunday’s Gold Game is free of charge, but donations to help find a cure for pediatric cancers will be accepted.

Week 4 Eagle Notes: 
USI gets a win and tie to open GLVC: The Screaming Eagles (3-1-1, 1-0-1 GLVC) posted a win and a tie to start GLVC action in 2018. USI rallied to defeat Drury University, 2-1, behind a pair of second half goals by junior forward Eric Ramirez to start league play. The Eagles finished the first GLVC weekend with a 0-0 double overtime tie at Truman State University.

Rickey, Ramirez, Walsh leading the offense: Junior midfielder Sean Rickey leads the USI offense with seven points on a team-high three goals and one assist. Freshman defender Colten Walsh and junior forward Eric Ramirez are tied for second with four points each, both with two goals.

Between the posts: Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Faas leads the Eagles between the posts with a 3-1-1 overall record and a pair of shutouts. He also has a 1.04 goals against average in 435 minutes.

Santoro in his 10th year: USI Head Coach Mat Santoro has a 78-71-18 overall record at the helm. Santoro has guided the Eagles to four GLVC Tournament appearances and the NCAA II Tournament in 2016.

USI versus Missouri S&T: The Eagles trail the Miners all-time, 15-10-3, in a series that dates back to 1982 when Missouri S&T was named the University of Missouri-Rolla. USI is 1-3-1 in the last five games, including last season’s 2-1 win at Strassweg Field.
