Volleyball completes non-conference schedule Aces drop matches against Dayton and Tennessee
Non-conference play came to a close on Saturday as the University of Evansville volleyball team took on Dayton and Tennessee in the Flyer Invitational. UE fell by scores of 3-0 in both contests.
Dayton picked up a 3-0 win over the Aces to start Saturday’s action. Rachel Tam had 15 kills in the match while Allana McInnis notched 24 assists and Alondra Vazuez recorded 12 digs. With the scored tied at 3-3 in the opening frame, the Flyers reeled off seven of the next nine points to take a 10-5 lead. They were able to pull away from that points, winning by a 25-13 final.
Tam played a big part in game two, notching seven kills while hitting .308 as UE played much better. The teams battled to a 5-5 tie before Dayton scored five in a row to take a 10-5 lead. Evansville rallied back to tie it up at 12-12. Vazquez excelled on the serve while Mildrelis Rodriguez had a pair of kills. UE continued to keep it close, but could never get over the hump to take the lead as Dayton won by a 25-19 final.
Evansville continued to battle the Flyers in the third game, but UD went up 10-4. The Aces got within three points at 12-9, but Dayton would lead by as many as eight points on their way to a 25-17 win that clinched the match.
UE faced Tennessee in the second contest of the day, dropping a 3-0 decision. Tam had seven kills while Rodriguez and Elizabeth Giller notched six apiece. Cecilia Thon paced the team with 18 assists while Vazquez added eight more digs to her tally.
A 5-1 start in the opening set saw the Volunteers extend the edge to 10-2. They never looked back in taking a 25-14 win. The opening six points were tied in the second set before UT went up by a 10-7 score. Giller and Rodriguez spearheaded a 3-0 stretch that knotted the game at 10-10. Tennessee slowly began to take control before pulling away late by a final of 25-15.
The Aces continued to give it everything they had in the third game, not letting the Volunteers get too far away in the early going as UT had an 11-8 lead. The difference came in the next portion of the contest as the Vols went on an 8-2 stretch to lead 19-12. The UT lead stood strong from there as they clinched the match with a 25-18 victory in the third set.
Missouri Valley Conference action begins next week for the Aces as they play host to Loyola (Friday) and Valparaiso (Saturday) inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse. Both games start at 7 p.m.
Tri-State Alliance Holds Press Conference To Set The Record Straight
Tri-State Alliance Holds Press Conference To Set The Record Straight
“We made an error and that error was with the 990’s,†says Paynter. “Regrettably, we met the deadline with the extension, we met the deadline to file the 990 and that would be the 2016 public statement. We did not include a schedule A.â€
The TSA says they resubmitted the return which wasn’t fully submitted. The tax status was suspended and they have appealed that decision. Former board member Kelley Coures also stepped down from the group after he says a person advised him there might be a potential misuse of resources within the organization.
“The rumor that the former VP mentioned is completely false,†says Julie Robinson, TSA board member. “There is nothing sketchy about the numbers. There was just a misinformed out of a stack of forms. And it’s really unfortunate.â€
They say their next steps include initiating an audit to see what recommendations the auditor might have.
“We’re going to start with the current audit I believe of this year or last year and the prior year and I’m certain we’ll go further,†says Robinson. “We’re just going to do another board member meeting before we continue because we want to provide transparency, full transparency as quickly as we can.â€
A quarterly meeting will be held in December and a meeting in January will take place to approve the 990 for 2018.

Senator Joe Donnelly Supports The Miner’s Pension Fund
Senator Joe Donnelly Supports The Miner’s Pension Fund
The Levi Allen Pension Update Rally was held to go over current actions and future plans for their pension fund. Currently, the United Mine Workers of America’s Pension Fund program is suffering from a drastic loss due to the great recession. They say that small communities are just as dependent on miner’s pension check as the miners themselves, and if this fails, towns like Evansville will certainly take a hit. The UMWA has described their current situation, as a crisis. They also continue to worry that their pension fund could be nonsolvent in about four years.
Senator Joe Donnelly spoke at today’s event along with Levi Allen. The Senator says ‘These miners worked their whole lives to keep our country moving forward to keep our economy growing and we made a promise that we make sure these pensions were set and so my job is to make sure that promise is kept.†The UMWA stresses that if their pension fund fails, other unions like The Teamsters and The Bakery Union will follow in their footsteps.
The committee will continue to hear suggestions until September 18th and are required by statute to make a recommendation by the end of November.

Stand Down Event Aims to Combat Veteran Homelessness
Boots, blankets, sweatshirts and many personal hygiene items were given out to help those who may be sleeping outside in the cold winter months. All items were donated and the goal is to make sure these veterans are taken care of and not forgotten.
Evansville VA Homeless Case Manager Dave Swenson says, “A lot more of our vets wind up homeless than anybody else statistically speaking and you know they’ve done their service to our country most of these guys. It’s nice to be able to give them a little hand up, come out here and support them and show them we care about them even though they may be a forgotten segment of society. We still know who they are, we care about them, we wish them well, and we want to try and give them a hand up.â€
The ‘Stand Down for Homeless Veterans’ event isn’t just here in the Tri-State.
Groups across the country held similar events over the past week.
