The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team battled to a  0-0 double overtime tie with Truman State University Sunday afternoon in Kirksville, Missouri. The Eagles see their record go to 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 GLVC, while the Bulldogs go to 2-0-3, 0-0-2 GLVC.

USI and Truman battled to a 0-0 draw through the first 45 minutes. The Eagles had the greater amount of chances, leading in shots, 7-5, and corner kicks, 2-0.

Truman seemed to gain the momentum in the second half, taking over the lead in shots overall, 12-10, and in the second half, 7-3. The Eagles and Bulldogs also had two corner kicks each.

In the overtime periods, USI had the only two shots in extra time, one in each period, and a pair of corner kicks. Truman was only able to muster a pair of corners in overtime.

Leading the way for USI was goalkeeper Justin Faas (Carmel, Indiana). Faas shutout the Bulldogs for 110 minutes, facing a total of 12 shots and making two saves, in posting his second shutout of the fall.

The Eagles stay on the road and travel to Rolla, Missouri, to visit Missouri University of Science & Technology Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Miners are 0-5-0, 0-1-0 GLVC, after falling to Quincy University this afternoon, 5-1.

The Eagles trail the Miners all-time, 15-10-3, in a series that dates back to 1982 when Missouri S&T was named the University of Missouri-Rolla. USI is 1-3-1 in the last five games, including last season’s 2-1 win at Strassweg Field.

The next home match for the Eagles comes in a week when USI welcomes Bellarmine University to Strassweg Field for a noon match. The Eagles lead the Knights all-time, 24-14-2, since the creation of the USI men’s soccer program and the GLVC in 1979.

“IS IT TRUE” SEPT 17, 2018

7

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE we wonder why the City of Evansville has put in $106,908.00 in their 2018 Downtown Parking Garage budget for contractual services for the Downtown Doubletree mix Garage?

IS IT TRUE we are puzzled why the two fiscal conservatives on the Evansville City Council have been extremely quiet during the 2019 budget hearings?

IS IT TRUE we are told that a Democratic member of the Evansville City Council was told if they go along with the political agenda of the Winnecke administration they will not run anyone against them in the 2019 City election?

IS IT TRUE we had a couple readers complained that several candidates running for public office may in violation of the City/County right away set back ordinance for political signs?  …we recommend that the persons in charge of placing political signs for Nick Hermann, Chris Kifer, Mike Duckworth, John Montrastelle please check and see if their signs located on the corner of Outer Lincoln Ave and Newburgh Road are in violation?  …we also recommend that Chris Kiefer, John Montrastelle and Mike Duckworth take a look and see if their signs located on the right of ways at Burkhart and Lincoln Avenue are in compliance of the local City/County right away set back ordinance for political signs

IS IT TRUE last week the Board of Directors of The Tri-State Alliance of Evansville addressed a claim by a former Executive Committee and Board member that they may have misused funds? …during the press conference Wally Paynter, Tri-State Alliance president stated: “After reviewing all records, all donations, all expenditures, we found that everything was in order?”  …Mr. Paynter also stated that “we made an error and that error was with the 990’s?” …he also added that “Regrettably, we met the deadline with the extension, we met the deadline to file the 990 and that would be the 2016 public statement but we did not include a schedule A?”  …we are glad to hear that the next step to be taken by the Board of Directors of The Tri-State Alliance is to initiate an audit? …we expect that the results of the audit will be made public when completed and that everything will be deemed in order?  …we are pleased that the Board of Directors of The Tri-State Alliance have taken this controversy head on and know that they will continue providing a valuable service to the people they serve?

IS IT TRUE that “Jacobsville Join In” received their operating funds from the Evansville DMD?  …recently they closed their North Main Street offices without fanfare?…we hope the reason for the abrupt closing of “Jacobsville Join In” office located on North Main Street didn’t have anything to do with the current “Forensic Audit” being conducted at ECHO Housing Corporation?  …it’s time that the Director of the Evansville DMD come forward and make a public statement concerning this issue?   …that so far the only thing we are hearing about the abrupt closing of the “Jacobsville Join In” North Main office from the Director of the Evansville DMD office are crickets?

IS IT TRUE it was recently announced by officials of the Deaconess Hospital-Evansville that they are building a new Health Care facility next to the IU Medical School in downtown Evansville?  … that a CCO reader told us that she tried to find out what Deaconess paid for the land to build this new healthcare facility?   …she told us that not only couldn’t she find out how much Deaconness paid for the property but also who’s owns it?  ….all we can say is that this very interesting?

IS IT TRUE we are hearing that the Mayor Winnecke and his first lady are going all out to help Mike Duckworth get elected as the next County Commissioner of Vanderburgh County?

IS IT TRUE we are told that long time 4th Ward City Councilwomen Connie Robinson will not seek re-election?  …that Alex Burton is being groomed to replace her on the City Council?

IS IT TRUE we are also hearing that a group of Evansville taxpayers is working on a blog that will be able to inform Evansville taxpayers on how much of our tax dollars has been spent by the Mayor and City Council members on capital projects during the last 7 years?  …we hear that the breakdown of the costs for these capital projects will be mind-boggling?  …we are told that they this group are planning to disseminate this information to the masses during the 2019 Evansville City election?  …we predict that this will be an interesting read?

Todays“Readers Poll” question is; If the election was held today for the Vanderburgh County Commissioner who would you vote for?

Remember Sailor Billy Summers

1
LETTER TO THE EDITOR:  Remember Sailor Billy Summers
by Gail Riecken
It was years ago that a Republican friend introduced me to “Sailor Billy Summers” in the story relayed by  Lucius Quintus Cinncinatus Lamar as told in JFK’s book, Profiles in Courage.
Lamar was a Senator from the state of Mississippi in postwar Civil War. After casting a very unpopular vote, he held rallies across his district where he worked to persuade his constituents to let him keep his seat.  His vote, although many then and now would question the position he took, was for the good of the country, he said. Here is a very brief version of the “courage” story Lamar insisted to be the truth….
During the Confederate War the Captain of a blockade runner, when leaving the dock in Savannah Harbor, sent his trusted boatsman Sailor Billy Summers to the topmast to look for enemy ships. The boatsman Summers yelled out that he saw ten ships far away.
Did I mention the ship was loaded with military and civilian officials?  Well, after consulting with each other, these men said they knew where the Yankee fleet was and it was not in the Harbor. But the Captain, who said he knew the officials know more about military affairs, said he trusted his boatsman. He was high up, had a powerful glass and could see far in the distance.
As the story goes, the officials were saved because that Captain trusted the one person who could see the big picture, far off in the distance. Lamar relayed that as a US Senator he was better to judge what is in the best interests of his constituents. As I said, many disagreed with his vote and would today, but his constituents admired his courage and conviction.
John Krull in his September 14th article about courage in politicians speaks to what he says is a lack of courage in some Hoosier politicians, one senator from southwestern Indiana, in particular. I won’t comment on Krull’s strong statements about this senator, only to say Krull is very critical that this senator would not participate in the Courier and Press’ public debate. The reason: Krull reports the newspaper had published letters that had “hurt his [the senator’s] feelings”.
What I will comment is that I am overjoyed at the courage of this senator’s very talented opponent.
Edie Hardcastle, the Democrat, has shown she is committed, determined and smart. She will drive the majority party in the State Senate to justify every vote.  And, I believe she will always have Sailor Billy Summers’ “powerful glass” in mind. What is good for her constituents and good for the State will be what Edie Hardcastle will honor. And, when her vote is unpopular, she will not shy away from explaining her position and hold rallies around her district, Lamar style.

The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to 20th-ranked Truman State University Sunday afternoon in Kirksville, Missouri. USI goes to 2-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the GLVC, while Truman sees its record go to 5-1-0, 1-1-0 GLVC.

USI fell behind late in the first half when Truman took a 1-0 lead with a goal at 33:58. The Bulldogs would hold that one-goal advantage through the intermission.

In the second half, the Bulldogs would add another tally to their total for the 2-0 final at 81:35. The Eagles had a total of eight shots on the day, three on-goal, but could not get by the Truman defenses.

USI stays on the road on in the GLVC for its next match, visiting Missouri University of Science & Technology Friday at 5 p.m. The Miners are 1-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the GLVC after falling 1-0 at Quincy University this afternoon.

The Eagles lead the Miners all-time, 10-5-0, in a series that dates back to 1996 when Missouri S&T was named the University of Missouri-Rolla. USI is 3-2-0 in the last five games, including last season’s 3-1 win at Strassweg Field.

The next home match for the Eagles comes in a week when USI welcomes Bellarmine University to Strassweg Field for a noon match. The Knights lead the Eagles all-time, 13-6-5, since the creation of the USI women’s soccer program in 1996.
