Off Road Vehicle Accident Results in Serious Bodily Injury – Pike County

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an off road vehicle (ORV) accident that occurred in Pike County on October 7 at approximately 8:19 PM.

Terry Jones, 56, of Petersburg was operating a 2012 Honda TRX420 in the 2600 block of E 475 North in Pike County when his vehicle reportedly struck a dog.  Mr. Jones lost control of the vehicle causing it to roll over.  Mr. Jones and his passenger, Candace Parks, 39, of Huntingburg were ejected from the vehicle.

Mr. Jones and Ms. Parks were both transported by helicopter to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.  Mr. Jones sustained serious bodily injuries and remains in critical condition.  Ms. Parks was treated and released from the hospital.

No safety equipment was used in the incident.  Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.

Indiana Conservation Officers recommend always wearing a helmet when operating or riding an ORV, and always following manufacturer recommendations for operation.

Responding agencies include the following: Pike County Sheriff’s Department, Petersburg Police Department, Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department, Pike County EMS, Air Evac, and Indiana Conservation Officers.

Indiana students to get free FAFSA filing help at College Goal Sunday

Financial aid professionals will be volunteering at Ivy Tech Community College Evansville and 38 other sites in Indiana to help college-bound students and their families open the door to financial aid during College Goal Sunday. The event is set for 2 p.m. (local time), October 28, 2018.

 

The free program assists Indiana students in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA form is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships and student loans at most colleges, universities and vocational/technical schools nationwide. The FAFSA MUST be filed by April 15 to be eligible for Indiana financial aid. College Goal Sunday is so important since completing this required form correctly and by the deadline is sometimes perceived to be complicated and time consuming. In less than one afternoon at a College Goal Sunday event, students and their families can get free help and file the form online.

 

Now in its 30th year, College Goal Sunday has helped more than 94,000 Indiana students and families complete the FAFSA properly and on time. College Goal Sunday is a charitable program of the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association (ISFAA).

 

College Goal Sunday Doubles the Help Offered

“The event on October 28th will be one of two College Goal Sundays ISFAA is offering this FAFSA filing season.” said Bill Wozniak, co-chair of College Goal Sunday. “We hope all Hoosiers who have not filed already, take advantage of College Goal Sunday events across Indiana, file the FAFSA, and get one step closer to fulfilling their educational goals.”

 

According to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, programs like College Goal Sunday are reaching first-generation college students. In recent years, according to CHE statistics, more single-parent Hoosier families have filed for financial aid, indicating programs like College Goal Sunday are reaching high-risk students and their families.

 

“Students who don’t complete their financial aid paperwork properly and on time are often very disappointed when they find out how much financial aid they lost,” said Wozniak. “This is why the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association not only continues to provide College Goal Sunday, but offers two events during the year. If our assistance gives students a better chance at higher education and less debt, we’re fulfilling our mission.”

 

What students should bring

Students should attend College Goal Sunday with their parent(s) or guardian(s), and parents’ should bring completed 2017 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 Forms and other 2017 income and benefits information. Students who worked last year should bring their income information as well. Students 24 years of age or older may attend alone and bring their own completed 2017 IRS 1040 tax return, W-2 Form or other 2017 income and benefits information. Students and parents are encouraged to apply for their U.S. Department of Education FSA IDs at fsaid.ed.gov before coming to the event.

 

Volunteers will walk through the online form line-by-line and answer families’ individual questions as needed. All sites offer FAFSA online capabilities and many have Spanish interpreters. A complete list of sites is available at CollegeGoalSunday.org.

 

Attendees may win educational prizes

Students may also win one of five $1000 scholarships. Students who attend any of the College Goal Sunday sites and submit a completed evaluation form will automatically be entered in a drawing for a $1000 scholarship. The winners will be notified in December, and prizes will be sent directly to the higher education institution selected by the winning students.

 

21st Century Scholars benefit

21st Century Scholars are income-eligible students who sign a contract in the seventh or eighth grade promising they will graduate from high school, meet grade point requirements, fulfill a pledge of good citizenship, and apply for college financial aid. Upon high school graduation, Scholars who have fulfilled the commitment receive state funds to help cover their college tuition and fees for eight semesters at eligible Indiana colleges. To fulfill their pledge, scholars must submit a completed FAFSA form on time. College Goal Sunday can help.

Program is a national model

College Goal Sunday originated right here in Indiana, and is now a national model. Following Indiana’s example, College Goal Sunday events organized by more than 34 states have opened doors to higher education for hundreds of thousands of students all over the country.

UE men’s golf finishes sixth in Tom Tontimonia Invitational

Dallas Koth ties for 13th place

 Dallas Koth tied for 13th place to lead the University of Evansville men’s golf team to a 6th place finish at the Tom Tontimonia Invitational at Lakewood Country Club.

Koth’s final round tally came in at a 79 as he tied for 13th with a 220.  He was seven over par to lead the Purple Aces contingent.  Noah Reese tied for 21st as his final round 77 game him a 3-round total of 222 for the tournament.

UE’s low round of the day belonged to Spencer Wagner.  His 1-over 72 saw him tie for 30th with 223 strokes.  Jessie Brumley was fourth for the Aces, carding a 77 on Tuesday to finish with a 227.  He tied for 42nd.  Matthew Ladd matches Brumley’s effort of 77 and completed his three rounds with a 235.

Individual Gabe Rohleder matched Wagner’s final round total of 72 shots and finished the tournament with a 236.

Kent State’s Will Kurtz, playing as an individual, was the medalist.  He posted the low round of the tournament in the final 18, completing the day with a 6-under 65 to post a 206 in his three rounds of play.  He was four strokes in front of the field.

The team championship went to Dayton as the Flyers finished with an 869, two in front of Oakland.  Evansville took sixth place with an 890 and were six shots out of the top five.

Next week, the fall season will come to a close for the men as they travel to Dickson, Tenn. where they will take part in the F&M Austin Peay Intercollegiate.  It will take place from Oct. 15-16 at Greystone Country Club.

 

Health informatics conference to address emerging tech trends

A ground-breaking conference covering various aspects of health informatics will be held at the University of Southern Indiana from 8 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. Thursday, October 25 in the University Center. The fifth annual Health Informatics Tri-State Summit (HITS) will address emerging trends in the use of health information technology in direct patient care, consumer and patient engagement and will prepare health professionals to implement effective health informatics strategies in their individual professional practice and their organization.

The one-day event will be particularly relevant, to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, technologists, and others whose scope of practice is related to health informatics, including students, who can attend at a reduced rate.

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Josh Luke, is a health care futurist, edutainer and national thought-leader and speaker on care coordination, population health management, readmission prevention and developing integrated post-acute networks. He is regarded as a “futurist” on value-based care and how it will shape the continuum of care. Luke has been described as an innovator, forward-thinking, and a strategist on teaching ACOs, BPCIs, acute hospitals and post-acute leaders how to position themselves for revenue growth in a post-ACA model.

Dr. Joyce Lee, a physician, researcher and designer, will close the conference, describing methods of design thinking, including participatory design with patients and caregivers. She is a Robert P. Kelch, MD research professor of pediatrics at the University of Michigan medical school and professor at the medical school and at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Her work focuses on the development of learning health systems using the methods of clinical informatics, quality improvement and patient-centered participatory design.

The Health Informatics Tri-State Summit will feature six other speakers who will cover a variety of topics related to health informatics technology:

  • Interoperability and role of Health Information Exchanges (HIEs)
  • Cybersecurity and security challenges
  • Nursing informatics: beginner, intermediate and advanced
  • Telehealth’s role in health informatics
  • Patient portals and perceptions

The registration fee is $125, $100 for HIMSS members and $15 for students, if registering by October 12, 2018.

Women’s golf wins team and individual championship

Aces pick up hardware at Chi-Town Fall Invite

  The University of Evansville women’s golf team won the team championship at the Chi-Town/Ted Rhodes Fall Invite while senior Sydney Anderson was the medalist on Tuesday at Harborside International Golf Center.

All five of the Purple Aces team golfers finished in the top 12 as UE won the championship by eight strokes over Green Bay.  Evansville tallied a 620 while the Phoenix finished with a 628.  CSU Bakersfield finished in third place with a 643.

Sydney Anderson shot an even 72, the lowest round of the tournament, on her way to the individual championship.  Following her 79 on Monday, Anderson finished the two rounds with a 151, defeating Green Bay’s Katie Warpinski by one shot.

Madison Chaney came home in fifth place.  The senior carded a 79 on Tuesday and finished the event with a 156.  Alyssa McMinn tied for 7th place.  She posted an 80 on Monday and improved by two shots in the final round, registering a 78.

Sophia Rohleder came home in a tie for 9th place with a 2-round tally of 160 while Lexie Sollman took 12th place with a 162.  Sollman made a huge leap for UE; she finished Monday’s play with an 85 before firing off a 77 in the final 18 holes.  Caitlin O’Donnell notched a 180 playing as an individual.  After shooting a 93 in round one, she lowered her score by six, notching an 87 in the last round.

In two weeks, the Purple Aces will wrap up the fall season as they host the Charles Braun Intercollegiate.  Set for October 22-23, the tournament will be held at Oak Meadow Country Club on the north side of Evansville.

 

International Walk to School Day

International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October. Today, thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico – participate every October.

There are several schools in the Evansville area that are participating in this year’s event, including (but not necessarily limited to) Dexter, Caze, Highland, Fairlawn and Christ the King.   Motorists are asked to be vigilant on the morning of October 10th as there several children walking near the schools.
