EPD Sergeant Receives Exclusive Honor Through Hard Work

The Evansville Police Department would like to acknowledge and brag on one of our own. Sergeant Steve Kleeman has served the Evansville citizens for over twenty years.

During that time he has served in a number of capacity ranging from Filed Training Officer, to Academy Instructor, to Motor Patrol Sergeant, to Field Training Unit Supervisor, and several other capacities. Most recently Sgt. Kleeman competed for the necessary requirements to become one of only two Master Instructors in southern Indiana. Sgt. Kleeman went through a grueling and competitive process in which he endured an eight-panel interview just to be accepted into the course. During the course of his evaluation Sgt. Kleeman was observed while instructing three separate courses while simultaneously doing research and writing his own research paper.

Sgt. Kleeman then endured a second-panel interview upon completion. With this accreditation Sgt. Kleeman has now achieved the highest rank that a law enforcement instructor can achieve. Several agencies will lean on his expertise as he will now be able to teach others instructor development.

We are extremely proud to call Steve Kleeman one of our own. As previously mentioned there are two Master Instructors in Southern Indiana. The other one is Officer Chuck Knoll, also of the Evansville Police Department. Congratulations!

Evansville Runner Bob Wolf Passes Away from Brain Cancer

NOVEMBER 8TH, 2018 MITCH ANGLE EVANSVILLE, INDIANA

The Evansville running community is mourning after the loss of an area legend.

Bob Wolf passed away following a lengthy battle with brain cancer on the morning of November 8th.

Wolf was one of the first members of Team 13, a group of runners who train together for the Evansville Half Marathon.

When he was diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year, Wolf made a goal to take part in his 15th Half Marathon. He was able to do so with help from family and friends who call themselves the “Wolf Pack.” They started a Go Fund Me page to raise enough money to buy a racing wheelchair and met their goal within just three weeks.

Wolf took part in his final Half Marathon last month with the help of his Wolf Pack.

A date for his funeral has not been set.

St. Vincent & Purdue Offer Free Trainings For Healthcare Professionals In Honor Of Great American Smokeout

Annual Event Encourages Individuals To Stop Smoking

INDIANA – Every year, on the third Thursday of November, smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout event. The annual event is designed to encourage smokers to use this day to make a plan to quit, or plan in advance and then quit smoking that day. By quitting – even for one day – smokers will be taking an important step toward a healthier life and reducing their cancer risk. In honor of this year’s event, St. Vincent and Purdue College of Pharmacy are inviting healthcare professionals from across the state to register for the Rx for Change: Ask-Advise-Refer training.

St. Vincent will provide the training, at no charge, for any healthcare professional in Indiana to help them advise their patients about the various resources available to quit smoking. In addition, participants will gain a better understanding about the impact of tobacco use on one’s health, receive information on the proper selection and use of FDA-approved medications for quitting smoking, and will learn how to refer patients to the Indiana Tobacco Quitline (1 -800- QUIT NOW). Participants will also be able to take advantage of continuing education (CE), networking opportunities with industry peers, and receive the latest information regarding tobacco cessation and treatment. 

Per the CDC, “Tobacco use causes more deaths than alcohol, AIDS, murders, and suicides combined. It is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States, yet it kills more than 11,000 Hoosiers every year. By bringing healthcare professionals together and educating ourselves about tobacco use, we have a better chance to save more lives in our communities.”

The trainings will take place throughout the year across the state. Seating is limited and registration is required. For more information about Rx for Change training, contact your local St. Vincent Hospital.

Potential Fourth Port Purchase Agreement Extended

Governor Eric J. Holcomb announced that the Ports of Indiana has entered into an agreement to extend the option to purchase land near Lawrenceburg that could potentially be the state’s fourth port.

The Ports of Indiana entered into an agreement in Sept. 2017 to purchase up to 725 acres of land that was formerly the American Electric Power plant. That option was set to expire Dec. 31, 2018.

This action provides an extension up to six months, through June 30, 2019, for the seller, Tanners Creek Development, LLC, to finalize environmental work plans for the land.

If the Ports of Indiana decides to move forward, the total cost for the land and equipment would be approximately $8 million. The property has the potential to spur the economy of southeast Indiana by providing new jobs, multimodal connections to world markets, and development opportunities.

Indiana has three state ports operating on the Ohio River and Lake Michigan, with locations in Jeffersonville, Mount Vernon and Burns Harbor/Portage. Indiana has not opened a new port since 1985. Over the years, the Ports of Indiana has expanded each of its ports and now operates approximately 2,800 acres along Indiana’s navigable waterways. Indiana’s ports contribute over $7.8 billion per year to the state economy and support nearly 60,000 jobs.

 

UE volleyball set for final road trip

In its final road contest of the season, the University of Evansville volleyball team head to Terre Haute to face Indiana State in a 5 p.m. CT game on Friday.

UE played a competitive match at Missouri State, staying within six points in all three sets.  Tam hit .294 on her way to a match-high 15 kills while Alondra Vazquez notched 11 kills and a team-best 11 digs.  On Saturday, Evansville had 51 kills in a 3-0 triumph at Southern Illinois.  Tam and Mildrelis Rodriguez led the way with 15 kills apiece while Allana McInnis added 44 assists.

Over the course of Evansville’s two matches over the weekend, Rachel Tam registered 4.83 kills and 2.67 digs per set while leading the Purple Aces to a 1-1 mark.  In Friday’s match at Missouri State, Tam tallied 14 kills and seven digs.  She hit an accurate .294.  Tam added 15 more kills at Southern Illinois on Saturday, recording nine digs and four service aces.  She remains second in the MVC with 4.28 kills per set; her tally is 27th in the nation.

Senior Mildrelis Rodriguez continues to impact her team on the offensive and defensive sides of the net.  For the season, she is second on the team in kills (3.12/set) and third in digs (2.78/set).  Last weekend, she added to those numbers with 4.17 kills and 2.67 digs per game.  Her top outing came at SIU as she notched 15 kills and 8 digs.

Indiana State comes into Friday’s match with a 9-18 overall record and stand at 2-13 in league play.  Laura Gross has a team-high 3.12 kills per set while Makayla Knoblauch has notched 9.47 assists per game.  Jade York and Gross anchor the defense with 4.32 and 3.94 digs per set, respectively.

 

2018 Senior Seminar to showcase capstone work of art majors

The 2018 Senior Seminar Exhibition is on display from Wednesday, November 7 through Sunday, December 9 in the Kenneth P. McCutchan Art Center/Palmina F. and Stephen S. Pace Galleries at the University of Southern Indiana. A free public reception for the student artists will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 11 at the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries. Light refreshments will be served.
The exhibit features art and design work by 37 senior art majors and is the culmination of their artistic achievements at USI. The exhibit is an important aspect of capstone seminar courses required for all USI art majors.

Governor Eric Holcomb Directs Flags To Be Flown at Half-Staff

Governor Eric J. Holcomb is directing flags across the state to be flown at half-staff to honor the victims of the tragedy at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California.

 

Flags should be flown at half-staff from now until sunset on Saturday, November 10, 2018.

 

Gov. Holcomb also asks businesses and residents to lower their flags to half-staff.

Otters set game times for 2019 season at Bosse Field

The Evansville Otters announced game times for the 2019 regular season schedule and the 25th season at Bosse Field.
The Otters will play 48 regular season games at Bosse Field, starting with Opening Weekend May 10-12 against the Southern Illinois Miners.
Game times for the regular season are as follows:
Tuesday through Saturday are at 6:35 p.m.
Sunday games in May and August (5/12, 5/19, 8/4, 8/18, 8/25) are at 12:35 p.m.
Sunday games in June and July (6/16, 6/30, 7/14, 7/28) are at 5:05 p.m.
The Otters will host three exhibitions leading up to Opening Weekend. Exhibition games on May 1 and May 8 will be Education Day games against the Florence Freedom and the Black Sox professional traveling team, respectively. Both games will start at 10 a.m. The Otters will also have a home exhibition May 3 against Southern Illinois at 6:35 p.m.
Evansville will have a midweek day game June 12 against the Windy City Thunderbolts with first pitch at 12:05 p.m.
The full promotional schedule will be released at a later date.
Season ticket and group outing packages are on sale now for the 2019 season at historic Bosse Field.
Full and half season tickets packages are available as well as Flex 20 ticket packages for the 2019 season.
Group outing packages are also available for reservations in Right and Left Field picnic areas, the exclusive Bud Light Lime Patio and Premium Field Box sections.

Single-game tickets will go on-sale at a later date.
