‘80S SWAGGER COMES TO 421 WITH QUEENS BLVD
That wonderful bluster of ‘80s music, loved by so many devotees of Classic Rock, comes swaggering back to 421 Casino Lounge stage this weekend with the St. Louis band, Queens Blvd.!
Five seasoned musicians comprise Queen’s Blvd., a name whose origin begs speculation – Is it because they also cover songs by legendary group Queen? Or because they consider themselves the bad boys of rock and roll with a name that personifies what is known as New York City’s most dangerous thoroughfare?
At any rate, “the ‘80s are flying high again and it ain’t nothin’ but a good time,†the band’s website boasts. “Queens Blvd. is taking it to the streets with a loaded six string and a primal scream.â€
You can hear the band’s renditions of ‘80s anthems and remember when groups like AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi ruled the rock and roll airwaves. Queens Blvd appears live at Tropicana Evansville’s 421 Casino Lounge on Friday, October 12 from 7PM-12AM and on Saturday, October 13 from 7PM-10:30PM. No admission fee, just a two-drink minimum for a night of fun!
Then on Saturday, smokin’ hot DJ Dadi takes over to fill the 421 dance floor with his electrified mix to keep the party going from 11PM-2AM.

The tour launched in January 2018 with a sold out show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Iglesias is one of a handful of comedians with the distinct honor to headline and sell out the Staples Center, Madison Square Garden and the Sydney Opera House.
In addition to being one of America’s most successful stand-up comedians, Iglesias is also one of the most watched comedians on YouTube with over 380,000,000 views and has over 14 million fans across social media. In addition to the Netflix comedy series, Iglesias will star in two stand-up comedy specials for the network. The first, titled One Show Fits All, was recently filmed in front of a sold out audience at the Toyota Center in Houston and will air in early 2019. His second special for the network will tape sometime in the next year; both of these specials are follow-ups to his highly successful 2017 special I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was Hungry.
Iglesias’ prior television appearances include Comedy Central’s hit series Stand-Up Revolution and the comedy special Gabriel Iglesias: Aloha Fluffy, an unprecedented two-night comedy special generating over 15 million viewers. In the feature film arena Iglesias has signed on to star in STXfilm’s animated feature Ugly Dolls alongside Kelly Clarkson, Pitbull, Blake Shelton and Nick Jonas. His other film credits include A Haunted House 2, Show Dogs, Magic Mike, Magic Mike XXL and the animated films Coco, Ferdinand, The Star, Smurfs: The Lost Village, Norm of the North, The Book of Life, The Nut Job and Disney’s Planes. Women’s Hoops ranked No. 19 by DII Bulletin
University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball is ranked No. 19 in the Division II Bulletin Preseason Poll, which was released Monday morning.
The Screaming Eagles are one of two Great Lakes Valley Conference teams to earn a preseason Top 25 ranking by Division II Bulletin, with Drury University garnering the No. 5 spot in the Top 25. Lewis University is receiving consideration outside the Top 25.
USI is coming off its second straight GLVC East Division title after posting a 26-5 overall record and a 16-2 mark in league play a year ago. The Screaming Eagles advanced to the NCAA II Tournament for the 10th time in program history after advancing to the GLVC Tournament championship game.
The Eagles return two starters and nine players from last year’s squad, but must replace 56.5 percent of their scoring and 46.0 percent of their rebounding from last year’s team due to the graduations of Morgan Dahlstrom, Kaydie Grooms and Randa Harshbarger. Dahlstrom and Grooms were both first-team All-GLVC honorees a year ago, while Harshbarger was a third-team All-Conference selection.
Senior center Kacy Eschweiler (St. Charles, Missouri) also earned third-team All-GLVC recognition a year ago after averaging 8.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest. Senior guard Alex Davidson (Salem, Indiana) chipped in 8.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per outing in her first year as a starter last season.
The Eagles also are looking to a strong recruiting class that includes sophomore guard Kennedy Williams (Marshall, Illinois), freshman forward Ashlynn Brown (Perrysburg, Ohio) and freshman guard Samantha LaPlaca (Parma Heights, Ohio). Williams began her collegiate career at Bowling Green State University, where she averaged 3.1 points per game off the bench, while Brown was an All-State honoree after averaging 17.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as a senior at Perrysburg High School. LaPlaca averaged 23.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per contest at Normandy High School during her senior season in 2017-18.
USI begins the 2018-19 season November 9 when it travels to Midland, Michigan, to take on Midwest Region foe Northwood University.

Many Indiana counties face jail crowding with inmate shift
Taxpayers in dozens of Indiana counties will be paying for new jail beds years after sweeping state criminal code changes began sending more low-level offenders into local jails instead of state prisons.
At least 40 jails in Indiana are over capacity, The (Fort Wayne) Journal Gazette reported. A recent state survey found that almost half of all jail inmates are Level 6 felons, the lowest-level felons.
The state pays jails $35 daily for each of those inmates to cover food and staffing, but the money doesn’t pay for additional jail space. Dozens of Indiana’s 92 counties are studying, actively pursuing or developing expansion plans or are in the midst of building new facilities.
Huntington County Sheriff Terry Stoffel said he’s frustrated state lawmakers have passed on the expense of holding such offenders to local governments.
“Indiana is so great at saying ‘we are so flush with money’ and just passed it on to us,†Stoffel said.
The Huntington County Jail was built for 98 beds but recently was holding 156 inmates. Of those, 57 were Level 6 felons.
Other factors may have also contributed to the crowded jails, such as inmates in jail awaiting charges, trial or sentencing. Some inmates aren’t being bailed out because they can receive mental health or substance abuse treatment while in jail, according to some sheriffs around the state.
“They are looking for help,†said David Bottorff, executive director of the Association of Indiana Counties. “Jails weren’t designed to provide mental health and addiction services, but that is the expectation now.â€
Lawmakers passed a new law earlier this year that tried to address the jail crowding issue, which local officials say has grown since the state sentencing changes took effect in 2014.
Counties can now direct a portion of the local income tax rate to go toward correctional and rehabilitation facilities. The legislation requires counties that are building or renovating jails to conduct a feasibility study to examine possible alternatives. Counties can also work together on regional jails or rehab centers.
Regional jails are used in Ohio and a few other states, but don’t exist in Indiana.
Republican state Sen. Jack Sandlin of Indianapolis, who is a retired police officer, said he believes regional jails should at least be considered, though he acknowledged the idea faces opposition.
“We have 92 counties,†Sandlin said. “Do we need 92 separate jails?â€
