On USI’s campus, Thursday afternoon commissioners approved their budget recommendation of $2 billion in funding in higher education.

The proposal now heads to the state legislature for consideration. The commission also discussed tuition rates for next school year and decided to keep loan rates steady.

Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education member Teresa Lubbers says, “We both make recommendations on how much money the schools will get, our seven public systems in Indiana. But we also distribute over 300 and $5 million in financial aid. So we make recommendations on the aide to students as well.”

The Commission of Higher Education is a board of 12 leaders from around the state of Indiana.

Members are appointed by the governor to serve for a term of four years.

Bob Wolf passed away following a lengthy battle with brain cancer on the morning of November 8th.

Wolf was one of the first members of Team 13, a group of runners who train together for the Evansville Half Marathon.

When he was diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year, Wolf made a goal to take part in his 15th Half Marathon. He was able to do so with help from family and friends who call themselves the “Wolf Pack.” They started a Go Fund Me page to raise enough money to buy a racing wheelchair and met their goal within just three weeks.

Wolf took part in his final Half Marathon last month with the help of his Wolf Pack.

A date for his funeral has not been set.

Annual Event Encourages Individuals To Stop Smoking

INDIANA – Every year, on the third Thursday of November, smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout event. The annual event is designed to encourage smokers to use this day to make a plan to quit, or plan in advance and then quit smoking that day. By quitting – even for one day – smokers will be taking an important step toward a healthier life and reducing their cancer risk. In honor of this year’s event, St. Vincent and Purdue College of Pharmacy are inviting healthcare professionals from across the state to register for the Rx for Change: Ask-Advise-Refer training.

St. Vincent will provide the training, at no charge, for any healthcare professional in Indiana to help them advise their patients about the various resources available to quit smoking. In addition, participants will gain a better understanding about the impact of tobacco use on one’s health, receive information on the proper selection and use of FDA-approved medications for quitting smoking, and will learn how to refer patients to the Indiana Tobacco Quitline (1 -800- QUIT NOW). Participants will also be able to take advantage of continuing education (CE), networking opportunities with industry peers, and receive the latest information regarding tobacco cessation and treatment. 

Per the CDC, “Tobacco use causes more deaths than alcohol, AIDS, murders, and suicides combined. It is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States, yet it kills more than 11,000 Hoosiers every year. By bringing healthcare professionals together and educating ourselves about tobacco use, we have a better chance to save more lives in our communities.”
