House Republicans Express Support For Their Embattled Speaker

By Janet Williams and

INDIANAPOLIS—Dozens of sitting Indiana House Republicans and candidates signed off on a letter expressing support for Speaker Brian Bosma, who has been accused of hiring a lawyer to intimidate a woman who says she had a sexual encounter with him more than 20 years ago.

The Indianapolis Star reported on Wednesday that Bosma, an Indianapolis Republican, paid attorney Linda Pence $40,000 to investigate a former intern for the House Democratic caucus.

The woman, Kandy Green, told the newspaper that investigators for Pence had been questioning her friends and family to find out negative information about her, actions which she has interpreted as intimidation.

Bosma has denied all allegations.

The letter from Bosma’s campaign and sent by the public relations firm of Sease, Gerig & Associates has a list of 64 House members and candidates who say they support Bosma in the aftermath of the allegations.

“We stand with Speaker Brian Bosma against this attempt by the Indianapolis Star to discredit him, a conservative leader, with uncorroborated allegations,” the letter said.

“Having worked alongside the speaker, some of us for decades, we know him to be a man of integrity, and we believe him. Speaker Bosma has been a great leader making Indiana the best place in the country to live, work and raise a family. We stand by him 100 percent as he continues to lead our state forward.”

Earlier, Bosma’s fellow Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb declined to call for an investigation into Bosma’s actions. He was attending a workforce development announcement where reporters bombarded him with questions about the allegations against Bosma.

“I don’t think it would be fair for me to comment on a story that what I read has lingered for decades and this story is all I have the benefit of reviewing,” Holcomb said.

Holcomb, along with Bosma and other political leaders of both parties, had called on Attorney General Curtis Hill to resign after he was accused of groping several women at a bar following the end of the legislative session in March. Hill has denied wrongdoing and has refused to step down.

Holcomb said the Bosma accusations are different from the Hill situation. He said the allegations against Hill had been investigated by a law firm while he only had to the newspaper account of the charges against Bosma to go on.

“I don’t think it would be fair of me to comment on that story at this time having not the benefit of an actual report just the story,” Holcomb said, adding that it wasn’t his role to call for an investigation.

Indiana Democrats, who called on Holcomb to seek an investigation into Bosma’s actions, questioned whether political considerations are clouding the governor’s judgment.

“He could have easily recommended the House Ethics Committee launch an investigation,” said John Zody, chair of the Indiana Democratic Party. “Some situations demand leaders rise above the political fray to do the right thing. Faced with such a choice, it appears Gov. Holcomb stepped back. To Gov. Holcomb, just one question: what should be done?”

Winnecke Talks Progress in Evansville at Annual Mayor Luncheon

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke is updating businesses about the progress Evansville has made in the last year and where it’s going.

The Southwest Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual ‘Lunch with the Mayor.’ More than 350 people attended the event at Tropicana Evansville.

Mayor Winnecke congratulated the work done with the Stone Family Health Center. He gave updates on the progress being made in current downtown projects like the Hyatt Place Motel, Post House, and the YMCA.

Winnecke also gave business leaders updates on economic development in the area as well as workforce trends.

“Men and women who own businesses are the employers. Employers need to know what’s going on, employers need to understand where the city’s focus is, they need to know where the region’s going, what resources are available to them, so that’s why we keep a healthy line of communication between city administration and the business community,” says Mayor Winnecke.

The Southwest Chamber of Commerce will continue it’s lunch series’ with economic outlook in November.

Vectren Reaches Agreement With OUCC, CAC To Construct 50 Megawatts Of Renewable Energy in Southwestern Indiana

Vectren Reaches Agreement With OUCC, CAC
To construct 50 Megawatts Of Renewable Energy in Southwestern Indiana

Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana (Vectren) announced it has reached an agreement with the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) and the Citizens Action Coalition (CAC) to build a 50-megawatt (MW) universal solar array in eastern Spencer County as part of Vectren’s long-term electric generation transition plan. The agreement was filed yesterday with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC).

In reaching the agreement, the three parties worked to create a customer-friendly rate mechanism that maximizes the available tax incentives associated with solar projects and spreads all costs evenly over a 35-year period.

“This significant renewable resource, a key piece of Vectren’s Smart Energy Future vision, will be among the largest single-sited solar farms in the Tri-State and will serve Vectren customers for decades to come,” said Carl Chapman, chairman, president and CEO of Vectren. “We are pleased to be able to reach agreement with these consumer advocates to arrive at an approach that works best for all stakeholders,”

The solar farm will be located near Troy, Ind., on approximately 300 acres and will consist of about 150,000 solar panels. The array will be mounted on a single-axis tracking system, which enables the panels to automatically pivot to enhance energy generation as the sun’s rays move across the surface of the Earth.

Vectren’s solar projects currently underway, which are around 4 MW, and this planned facility, which should be fully operational in the fall of 2020, are expected to generate enough power to meet the needs of more than 12,000 households per year. When including Vectren’s 80 MW of wind power purchased through contracts with Benton County wind farms and its 3.2-MW landfill gas facility in Pike County, there will bill enough renewable energy in Vectren’s portfolio to power more than 35,000 homes.

Construction of the solar farm will begin after the IURC authorizes the project; a decision is expected in the first half 2019. First Solar, a leading global provider of comprehensive photovoltaic (PV) solar systems, will build the solar farm. During construction, the project will support up to 250 jobs. Vectren worked with Orion Renewable Power Resources, LLC, a joint venture between Orion Renewable Energy Group and MAP® Renewable Energy, to select, secure and eventually develop the property.
