According to a 2017 survey conducted by Small Business Trends, almost half of all cyber-attacks that occur on a daily basis affect small businesses. Of the targeted small businesses, 60 percent closed within six months due to the financial burden.

No matter the size of your business, the scope of online transactions, data storage and communications make us all a target of cyber threat.

The University of Southern Indiana is bringing cybersecurity information and resources to the tristate region from 8 a.m. to Noon Wednesday, October 24 at the inaugural Southwest Indiana Cyber Conference. The conference is $60 to attend.

â€œWe want to help small businesses be more aware of the cyber threat landscape that is impacting the region and understand what the legal implications and responsibilities are when it comes to cyber threats,â€ said Dr. Gabriela Mustata Wilson, associate professor of Health Informatics.

Aces look to split weekend on Saturday at Loyola

Â VALPARAISO, Ind. â€“ Mildrelis Rodriguez and Alondra Vazquez each recorded double-doubles, but Ally Cummings had 17 kills to lead Valparaiso to a 3-1 win over the University of Evansville volleyball team on Friday evening.

Vazquez led the way for UE (8-15, 2-8 MVC) with 15 kills while Rodriguez had 12.Â Both led the team with 14 digs.Â Allana McInnis contributed 33 assists.Â Cummings was one of three Crusaders (19-5, 6-3 MVC) in double figures in kills while Katherine Carlson (13) and Lizzie Zaleski (11) hit the mark.

The Crusaders opened the first set on a 5-1 run and pulled away to take a 25-15 win.Â It was the Aces who took advantage of the early momentum to earn a big win in the second frame.Â Alondra Vazquez notched a service ace that gave the Aces a 6-3 lead.Â UE led by six in the opening sequence before Valpo rallied back to cut the deficit to a pair at 16-14.

Mildrelis Rodriguez recorded a pair of kills in what was a 6-0 run that gave her team an 8-point lead.Â From there, the Aces cruised to a 25-17 win to knot the match at 1-1.

Game three saw the squads swap the lead a few times before Valparaiso was able to wrestle away a 10-6 lead.Â The Aces quickly closed the game to a pair, but the Crusaders countered and pulled away for a 25-14 triumph to take a 2-1 edge in the match.

A pivotal fourth set saw both teams give it their all with eight ties leading to an 11-11 score.Â An Ally Cummings service ace was part of a 3-0 stretch that saw the Crusaders take control.Â They completed the set on a 14-4 run to earn a 25-15 win in the third set to clinch the match.

Tomorrow, the Aces remain on the road as they head to Chicago for a match against Loyola.

Earlier this week, Wicks Well Market & Deli in Madisonville sold a 1 million dollar Mega Millions ticket. The next day, the Tobacco Patch in Owensboro sold a $150,000 ticket. Employees say theyâ€™ve had an influx of lottery ticket sales, and people are hoping the storeâ€™s luck hasnâ€™t worn off.

â€œSince this seemed to be a lucky spot- theyâ€™re coming here to purchase their tickets as well as in the tri-state area. So theyâ€™re going pretty much everywhere in the tri-state area, trying to be the next lucky winner,â€ says Wanda Brown, Tobacco Patch Cashier.

People all over the Tri-State are hoping to win big, and share the wealth with those they love.

â€œBut, if Iâ€™m blessed. Iâ€™d make sure a whole lot of other people be blessed too,â€ says Payne.

â€œOf course people have grandiose ideas, a Rolls Royce, and stuff. But I do know that one thing it would buy is peace of mind. For my family, my kids, my grandkids, if they ever had a problem Iâ€™d have peace of mind knowing we could get it solved,â€ says Tom Reynolds.

EVANSVILLE, Ind.Â â€“ The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team broke an eight-match winless streak versus Rockhurst University with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory Friday evening at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles see their record go to 11-2-1 overall and 9-1-1 GLVC, while the Hawks fall to 5-7-2, 4-5-2 GLVC.

The victory puts the Eagles one win away from capturing their first GLVC regular season title since 1991 and its first number one seeding in the conference tournament since 1990.

USI junior midfielderÂ Sean RickeyÂ (Columbia, Illinois) sent the Eagle faithful home with a victory when he hooked the ball into the left corner for the "golden goal" at 94:14 of overtime. The unassisted goal was Rickey's team-best 11^thÂ of the season.

The Eagles fell behind in the opening half when Rockhurst took a 1-0 lead at the 19:27 mark. The Hawks would hold onto the one goal advantage through the intermission.

USI would get the equalizer midway through the second half when junior forwardÂ Eric Ramirez(Vincennes, Indiana) knotted the score, 1-1, at 63:41. Ramirez was assisted on his fifth goal of the season by junior defenderÂ Justin BrooksÂ (Fishers, Indiana) and freshman defenderÂ Colten WalshÂ (St. Louis, Missouri).

The score would remain tied, 1-1, through the end of regulation and set the stage for Rickey in the overtime period.

Between the posts, sophomore goalkeeperÂ Justin FaasÂ (Carmel, Indiana) raised his record to 11-2-1 on the season. Faas needed only one save after facing a total of six shots in the match.

The Eagles concluded the four-game homestand Sunday when they host William Jewell College for Senior Day at 2:30 p.m. USI will honor its lone senior, defenderÂ Kent KatzmanÂ (Spring Hill, Tennessee), prior to the match. Â

William Jewell watched its record to 5-10-0 overall and 2-9-0 GLVC after losing to Bellarmine University, 2-0, tonight in Louisville, Kentucky. The all-time series between USI and WJC is tied, 3-3-1, since the Cardinals joined the Eagles in the GLVC in 2011. USI won last year's match-up, 3-1, in Liberty, Missouri.

Eagles Ground The Hawks, 1-0 USI Clinches A Spot In The GLVC Tournament

EVANSVILLE, Ind.Â â€“ The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team clinched a spot in the GLVC Tournament with a 1-0 win over Rockhurst University Friday evening at Strassweg Field. USI goes to 9-5-2 overall and 7-3-1 GLVC, while Rockhurst watched its record go to 8-5-1, 7-3-0 GLVC.

The win keeps the Screaming Eagles’ hopes to host a conference post-season game alive with two matches to play. The victory also was USI’s second over Rockhurst in the history of the series and broke a five-match losing streak to Hawks.

The Screaming Eagles and the Hawks battled through a rainy first half 0-0 draw by the intermission. Rockhurst had the majority of chances, posting a 10-2 advantage in shots.

In the second half, USI wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard when freshman forwardÂ Katlyn AndresÂ (Louisville, Kentucky) gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 50:33. Andres punches the ball across the goal of assisting crosses from senior forwardÂ Kennedy MooreÂ (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore forwardÂ Maggie WinterÂ (St. Louis, Missouri).

The USI defense and senior goalkeeperÂ Emily HopkinsÂ (Greenfield, Indiana) made the goal stand up for the remaining 40 minutes of action. Hopkins posted her fifth shutout of the season by tying a career-high with 10 saves after facing a total of 23 shots.

The Eagles conclude the four-match homestand Sunday when they host William Jewell College for Senior Day at noon. USI will honor its eight seniors â€“ defender/midfielderÂ Olivia WildeÂ (Racine, Wisconsin), defenderÂ Hannah HuebnerÂ (Newburgh, Indiana), forwardÂ Carissa DyerÂ (Crescent Spring, Kentucky), midfielderÂ Ryley HancockÂ (Evansville, Indiana), forwardÂ Kennedy MooreÂ (Evansville, Indiana), midfielderÂ Kirsten RettigÂ (Oregon, Ohio), defenderÂ Emma LuczkowskiÂ (Westfield, Indiana), and goalkeeperÂ Emily HopkinsÂ (Greenfield, Indiana) â€“Â prior to Sunday’s match.

The Cardinals are 7-8-1 overall and 4-7-0 GLVC after stumbling at Bellarmine University, 3-0, on the road this evening. William Jewell leads the all-time series, 4-3-0, since the Cardinals joined the GLVC in 2011. USI won last year’s match-up in Liberty, Missouri, 1-0.

Law Enforcement Explorer Open House

The Vanderburgh County Sheriffâ€™s Office will host a Law Enforcement Explorer open house and Recruitment Night onÂ Wednesday, October 24th, 2018 at 6pm. The event will take place at the Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center located at 1901 Lynch Road. The program is open to young men and women ages 16-20 as well as their families.

Law Enforcement Exploring is a career-oriented program that gives young adults the opportunity to explore a career in law enforcement with members of local law enforcement agencies. Founded on July 12, 1963, it is one of the Exploring programs offerd by Learning for Life, a non-scouting subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America. Law Enforcement Exploring provides educational training programs for young adults on the purposes, mission and objectives of law enforcement. The program provides leadership opportunities and community service activities.

Sheriff Dave Wedding explained, â€œLaw Enforcement Exploring is a great way for students to develop leadership skills and improve self-confidence.â€ Sheriff Wedding added, â€œThrough fun and exciting ‘hands-on’ career related activities and community service opportunities, students will gain valuable experience that will help prepare them for a career in law enforcement.â€

The primary goals of the program are to help young adults choose a career path within law enforcement and to challenge them to become responsible citizens within their communities. During the open house, potential post members will have the opportunity to observe just a sample of what they will see and experience throughout their experience with the law enforcement explorer post program. They will also have an opportunity to meet and speak with current Explorers.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriffâ€™s Office Explorer Post 82 is open to young men and women ages 16 through 20 years old that are enrolled in High School or College with an interest in learning more about careers in the field of law enforcement. Explorer Post 82 is entering its sixth year in Vanderburgh County. Last year, over 20 youth from local high schools and universities participated in the Explorer Post. During the year, Explorers participated in classroom and hands-on-training with full time law enforcement and emergency services personnel. Training included: first aid, handcuffing and arrest techniques, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, criminal investigations, and community emergency response.

Along with the class room and hands on training, Explorers interacted with children at the Vanderburgh County Sheriffâ€™s Office Tent at the Vanderburgh County 4H Fair, the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival, and staffing positions during Field Sobriety Check Points. Explorers have also participated in several â€œRide-A-Longâ€ opportunities.

Agencies from federal, state and local levels coordinate the Law Enforcement Exploring programs throughout the United States. The majority of the community programs are managed by local police departments, including sheriffs, chiefs of police and state police.

Nationally, over 33,000 explorers participate in Law Enforcement Exploring. The program highlights include: the National Law Enforcement Exploring Leadership Academies, motor patrol ride-alongs, career achievement awards, National Law Enforcement Exploring Conferences and scholarship opportunities.

Law Enforcement Career Exploring posts typically meet on a monthly basis during the school year. Most programs parallel the high school calendar and begin in the fall. There are a number of programs that start at other times during the year to meet the needs of the host organization and participants. Programs are flexible enough to fit in with other activities.
