0

The Evansville Rescue Mission’s seventh annual Drumstick Dash presented by TWO MEN AND A TRUCK will kick off Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 8 a.m. It will consist of either an 8K or a 5K mile run/walk.

The Evansville Rescue Mission is tremendously excited to have its seventh annual Drumstick Dash to start and finish at the C.K. Newsome Community Center (100 East Walnut Street, Evansville, IN 47713).  Runners and walkers will have the opportunity to go through historic Bosse Field, Garvin Park for the Drumstick Dash’s 8K and 5K routes, with 8K participants being able to briefly run or walk on the Pigeon Creek Greenway.

The Rescue Mission is expecting to field nearly 1,000 runners and walkers for the seventh annual Drumstick Dash where participants will have a chance to win a free frozen turkey and a commemorative Drumstick Dash medal and to choose from a variety of food court options.

Proceeds of the Drumstick Dash will offset the Rescue Mission’s annual Gobbler Gathering, which will be held ten days later on Tuesday, November 20 at the Old National Events Plaza (715 E. Locust St., Evansville, IN 47708) where more than 2,203 Tri-State families will be able to receive a Thanksgiving food basket filled with enough food to last through Thanksgiving.

The Drumstick Dash is extremely grateful for the following sponsors who have entrusted the Evansville Rescue Mission to feed literally thousands of Tri-State families through the Gobbler Gathering: TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, Old National Events Plaza, Atlas World Group, Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Indiana,  Packaging Corporation of America, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Product Acceptance and Research, Berry Global, Deaconess Hospital, Head’s Construction, Old National Bank, Shoe Carnival, Saint Vincent Evansville, Hoffman Plumbing, Inc., Way-FM, Brewer Direct, Inc., and Faith Music Radio.

USI Women’s Basketball clipped in season-opener

0

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball lost a heartbreaking 72-71 Midwest Region bout to host Northwood University Friday evening in its 2018-19 season-opener.

The Screaming Eagles (0-1) rallied from a late six-point deficit to tie the contest at 71-71 when senior guard Alex Davidson (Salem, Indiana) drained a three-pointer with 20 seconds to play in the contest.

Northwood (1-0), however, benefitted from a late whistle, which sent sophomore guard Ellie Taylor to the free throw line with 2.3 seconds to play. Taylor missed the first shot, but made the second, forcing USI, which was out of timeouts, to fire off a desperation heave by sophomore guard Emma DeHart (Indianapolis, Indiana) that missed its mark.

Davidson, who was called for the foul on Taylor, was a key factor for the Eagles, especially in the second half, where she racked up 11 of her 14 points while dishing out three of her game-high six assists.

Junior guard Ashley Johnson (Louisville, Kentucky) and senior center Kacy Eschweiler (St. Charles, Missouri) led USI with 16 points apiece, while sophomore guard Emma DeHart (Indianapolis, Indiana) finished with 12. Eschweiler had a game-high nine rebounds, while junior guard Adrianna Stolicker had a game-high 21 points to lead the Timberwolves.

Final minutes
Sophomore guard Kennedy Williams (Marshall, Illinois) had a pair of steals, followed by transition layups on each occasion, in the final 90 seconds to help USI get to within a point. After a layup by Taylor increased Northwood’s lead to 71-68, Davidson sank the three-pointer to tie the contest.

USI and Northwood went into the fourth quarter in a 56-56 stalemate, but the Timberwolves outscored USI 12-6 throughout the first seven minutes of the period to build a 68-62 advantage.

Eagles fall overtime to open 2018-19

0

The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team lost a tough overtime defensive battle with Hillsdale College, 67-60, on the first day of the Prairie Stars Tipoff Classic and the 2018-19 season in Springfield, Illinois. The Tipoff Classic is being hosted by the University of Illinois Springfield.

The Screaming Eagles and the Chargers scratched and clawed their way through the opening half trying to get into offensive rhythms. USI held a brief lead early, 12-10, when junior guard/forward Kobe Caldwell (Bowling Green, Kentucky) hit a three-point field goal with 11:26 left in the opening stanza.

Hillsdale responded by regaining the lead and built a 23-15 advantage by the 3:39 mark. USI rallied to close the gap to three points on an 8-3 run and went into the locker room with a three-point deficit, 26-23.

The first 20 minutes saw USI have a tough time from the field, shooting 22.6 percent (7-31) overall. The Eagles dominated the boards, 24-14, and was led by sophomore forward Emmanuel Little (Indianapolis, Indiana) with six boards.

After Hillsdale started the second half with a 4-0 run to lead 30-23, USI went on a 13-0 run to lead 36-30 on a bucket by Caldwell at 13:57. The Chargers would rally with an 8-2 lead to regain the advantage, 40-38, with 7:58 remaining.

The Eagles and the Chargers would trade leads and buckets until the final two minutes when Hillsdale seemed to take control with a 50-47 lead with 14 seconds left. USI senior guard Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana) took control to get the Eagles even by the end of regulation with a pair of free throws and a three-point bomb with no time left on the clock to send the contest to overtime.

In the extra period, Stein got the first bucket to give USI a 54-52 advantage, but then the Chargers took over. Hillsdale would outscore the Eagles 15-8 the rest of the way in overtime to pull out the 67-60 win.

Stein would lead the Eagles individually with 15 points on six-of-13 from the field, one-of-two from downtown, and two-of-four from the stripe. USI senior guard/forward Nate Hansen (Evansville, Indiana) followed with 11 points, while Caldwell and sophomore guard Mateo Rivera (Indianapolis, Indiana) had nine points each.

USI, as a team, dominated the glass with a 49-32 advantage with Little leading with a game-high 12 boards.

The Eagles conclude action in the Prairie Stars Tipoff Classic Saturday at 1 p.m. when they play Malone University. Malone started its season by playing host Illinois Springfield this the second game this evening. Game coverage can be found on GoUSIEagles.com.
