Nearly All Indiana House Republicans Issue Statement Supporting Bosma

October 11, 2018
Indianapolis Business Journal
More than 60 Republican state lawmakers or candidates have come out in support of Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma, who has been accused of intimidating a woman he allegedly had a sexual encounter with decades ago.  Of the 64 Republicans who signed a statement, 59 are current representatives and five are candidates for House seats.

The Following Statement Was Signed By Republican Members Of The Indiana House Of Representatives

“We stand with Speaker Brian Bosma against this attempt by the Indianapolis Star to discredit him, a conservative leader, with uncorroborated allegations,” the statement issued Thursday reads. “Having worked alongside the Speaker, some of us for decades, we know him to be a man of integrity, and we believe him. Speaker Bosma has been a great leader making Indiana the best place in the country to live, work and raise a family. We stand by him 100 percent as he continues to lead our state forward.”

The Indianapolis Star published a story Wednesday afternoon that said Bosma paid $40,000 to hire attorney Linda Pence with SmithAmundsen, at least in part to investigate and find negative information about the Kandy Green, a former intern for the House Democratic Caucus.

Green told the newspaper that Pence has questioned some of her family, friends, a former boyfriend and ex-husband in an effort to gather unflattering information about her. She said the experience left them shaken, and it made her willing to go public with the allegation.

Green told the Star she performed oral sex on Bosma in a hotel parking lot during her 1992 internship for Indiana House Democrats. She was 20 and he was 34 at the time. In a statement to the newspaper, Bosma denied all of the allegations.

Bosma oversaw the internal investigation over groping allegations against Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill earlier this year and is crafting the Legislature’s sexual harassment policy. Gov. Eric Holcomb called for Hill to resign and asked the state’s inspector general to investigate.

On Wednesday, Indiana Democrats released a statement requesting that Holcomb calls or an investigation into the allegations. Holcomb told reporters on Thursday morning that he wouldn’t act on the issue until seeing an official report, according to the Star.

Republicans have 70 House members. The only GOP House members who did not sign the statement were Jim Baird, Greg Beumer, Bruce Borders, Tim Brown, Ed Clere, Wes Culver, Dick Hamm, Curt Nisly, Milo Smith, and Tom Washburne.

Baird isn’t running for re-election but is instead running in Indiana’s 4th U.S. Congressional District. Beumer, Culver, Smith, and Washburne are also not seeking re-election. Hamm lost his re-election bid in the primary. Brown is still recovering from a motorcycle accident that occurred last month in Michigan.

Evansville Mother Pleads To Have Alleged Domestic Abuser Charged With More Felonies

Evansville Mother Pleads To Have Alleged Domestic Abuser Charged With More Felonies

A possible plea deal is in the works involving an Evansville man accused of torturing the mother of his children for hours at gunpoint and allegedly setting her car on fire.

The plea deal would help Kenneth Kirby The Third by reducing his eight felony charges to three.

In march of 2018, Morgan Clark allegedly escaped what was called a domestic violence attack that left her beaten, bruised, and trapped in her car that was later found burning.

Clark is recovering, but says she’s afraid that her ex boyfriend Kenneth Kirby The Third will harm her again, and that a plea deal could endanger her and her

children.

Morgan Clark says the only peace she has is knowing Kirby is behind bars.

Court documents show Clark was being held at a home against her will where she suffered abuse at the hands of her children’s father, Kenneth Kirby The Third.

Morgan, fearing for her life was reportedly held at gun point after sustaining bruises and facial lacerations.

“I was able to escape my own car,” says Clark.

The Clark family is confused why Kirby is only facing three charges.

“I think its ridiculous. I think its ludicrous,” says Morgan’s sister Katie Clark.

Police say Kirby is no stranger to the law.

He was arrested in 2014 for a home invasion and again in 2017 for a police chase.

“Now he has tried to kill her and he almost succeeded,” says Katie.

“And he got it dropped down to just battery when he held a gun to her head the whole time, and he beat her over and over with a gun the whole time tortured her for six hours.”

The Clark family says the justice system failed Morgan.

“I lost everything when he took my car and burnt it up. Right now I don’t have a way to take my kids to the doctor or even get a job right now so that is tough on me,” says Clark.

“I’m scared for whenever he gets out. I already have a restraining order, but I don’t know if there is a such thing as a lifetime one because that would be nice.”

The Clarks believe the plea deal doesn’t go far enough to protect their family.

“It scares me half to death” says Morgan’s grandmother Shirley Powers.

“I do have a gun permit and have security cameras.”

It’s not just a plea for help for just Morgan, but for all women surviving domestic violence.

“We need help. We don’t know where to start. We don’t know what to do,” says Clark.

“Hopefully the judge and the prosecutor will see this and not let the plea deal go through.”

The Clark family will be at Kirby’s court date tomorrow.

Kirby could potentially plead guilty, accept the plea deal and be sentenced.

If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison.

44News reached out to the Vanderburgh County prosecutors office who says they will answer questions on this case after the court date Thursday.

Early Voting Continues In Vanderburgh County

Early Voting Continues In Vanderburgh County

Compared to the last midterm election cycle, the Vanderburgh County election office hasn’t seen much of an increase. County election officials say after almost a week of early voting, a little more than 700 people have come in to cast their ballot.

What election officers have seen is a boom in mail-in ballots. They say that they’ve already sent out 2,600 mail-in ballots. They believe the reason for the influx is a mass mailer campaign by the Democratic Party that sent out thousands of mail-in applications.

Early voting started on October 10th and runs all the way to November 5th at the Vanderburgh County election office at the Evansville Civic Center. There are also a couple of Saturdays, October 27th and November 3rd where voters can come in from 8am to 4pm to cast their ballot at the official office.

Monday of next week early voting opens up to more polling places. At Central Library, McCollough Library, North Park Library, Oaklyn Library and Red Bank Library voting will start October 22nd and run Monday through Thursday from noon to 6 PM and then Fridays from noon to 5.

If you can’t make it out during the week but still want to cast your ballot early, two Evansville area polling places have you covered. Northeast Baptist Church and Cedar Hall School will be open October 27th and November 3rd from 8AM to 3PM.

Students That Complete EVSC Medical Program Promised Scholarship Money

Students who successfully complete EVSC’s Medical Professions Academy program and who are admitted to the University of Evansville will be offered a minimum of $20,000 in annual scholarships.

This is possible due to the partnership between UE and the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s Medical Professions Academy (MPA) have partnered for a new initiative to provide scholarships to MPA students, as well as integrate UE faculty and resources into the MPA program.

The partnership also will help increase the pool of qualified medical professionals in the area.

“This is such an exciting opportunity for us and our students,” said Andrew Freeman, MPA administrator, and Central High School assistant principal. “Being able to partner with such an esteemed university will not only provide our students with valuable knowledge, skills, and experiences, it also will provide them a way to help pay for their post-secondary education. With this partnership, we have the opportunity to make MPA an even better program, and provide more options for our graduates.”

The EVSC created the Medical Professions Academy, housed at Central High School, is for high school students interested in pursuing careers in science, health care, and medicine. An integrated science, English, and technology curriculum, paired with hands-on learning and relevant internships and shadowing experiences, prepares students for post-secondary science, medical, and health profession majors.

Direct entry programs are also available for high school seniors in the athletic training, nursing, physical therapy, and physician assistant programs.
