receive state funding boost for safety upgrades

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 16, 2024) – Vanderburgh County schools recently received more than $491,000 for safety upgrades through the state’s Secured School Safety Grant Program supported by area lawmakers.

State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) said the funding is part of the state’s biennial budget passed in 2023, which made significant investments in school safety. In all, 499 schools across Indiana’s 92 counties received $24 million total in state matching grants.

“As a school administrator myself, I am able to see these upgrades in effect and making a real difference,” said McNamara, author of the law establishing the grants. “These grants allow schools to ensure they can provide a safe learning environment.”

Area schools receiving grants include:

  • Annunciation Catholic School at Christ the King $28,333;
  • Annunciation Catholic School at Holy Spirit $40,492;
  • Corpus Christi School $15,066;
  • Evansville Day School $40,500;
  • Evansville Lutheran School $32,400;
  • Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. $81,000;
  • Holy Redeemer School $19,628;
  • Holy Rosary School $40,500;
  • Mater Dei High School $81,000;
  • Reitz Memorial High School $21,060;
  • Resurrection School $10,503;
  • Signature School Inc. $22,677;
  • St. Benedict Cathedral School $23,119;
  • St. Joseph School $15,343; and
  • Westside Catholic School $19,409.

State Rep. Tim O’Brien (R-Evansville) said funds can be used for a wide range of safety needs like support for resource officers, equipment and technology, active-event warning systems, threat assessments, and student and parent support services programs.

“Secured School Safety Grants help school systems enhance their safety features, with options for updated communication or video technology or having a resource officer on campus,” O’Brien said. “We want childrenand staff to feel safe at school so they can keep their focus on learning.”

State Rep. Matt Hostettler (R-Patoka) Indiana has allocated $187 million for school safety matching grants since the program started in 2013.

“Indiana’s Secured School Safety Grants are a tremendous opportunity for our local schools to boost their security plans and resources,” Hostettler said. “Schools have a variety of security needs, and I look forward to seeing the benefits that these state dollars will have in our communities.”

USI Women’s Soccer’s Ohlwein and Grafton earn OVC weekly honors

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer sophomore midfielder Greta Ohlwein and junior defender Charli Grafton earned Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors on Tuesday. Ohlwein was named OVC Offensive Player of the Week and Grafton was named OVC Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Ohlwein picks up her first career OVC accolade while Grafton receives her third career OVC weekly laurel. The two helped USI to a 1-0-1 record last week. The Screaming Eagles notched their first shutout of the season last Thursday with a 0-0 draw at Austin Peay State University before tallying their first win on Sunday against Bellarmine University, 2-1.
 
Ohlwein helped USI to its win on Sunday with two goals in the second half against the Knights, propelling USI ahead after the Eagles trailed by one at halftime. The sophomore scored in the 57th minute with a one-timer into the top side of the net. The game-winning goal came two minutes later in the 59th minute when Ohlwein slotted the ball past the Bellarmine keeper. The two-goal performance put the midfielder in a tie for a team-best two goals this season and it marked the first multi-goal performance by a Screaming Eagle since August 2022.
 
Grafton helped USI to its best defensive week of the season, allowing one goal in two games. The junior played full time in each contest and led a defensive unit that held Austin Peay scoreless in heavy rain from the remnants of Hurricane Francine. Plus, Grafton was part of the defensive effort that held Austin Peay to zero first-half shots for the second consecutive meeting against the Governors. On Sunday, Grafton stopped and blocked multiple opportunities from Bellarmine’s attack. Grafton and USI’s defense kept the Knights to only a couple of chances down the stretch of the 2-1 victory.
 
On the season, Ohlwein is tied for a team-high two goals and four points, which ranks top 10 in the OVC. Ohlwein has started eight matches for USI. Grafton has started every match, playing a full 90 minutes in seven matches while anchoring the Screaming Eagles’ defensive unit.

Vincennes University to host Women IN Tech Week Symposium & Showcase on Sept. 18
WHAT:

Indiana will celebrate Women IN Tech Week Sept. 15-22, 2024. The VU Women in Tech Week Symposium and Showcase is a dedicated celebration highlighting the contributions of remarkable women who bring immense value to the technology industry. The event features an inspiring keynote speaker and a panel of VU women alumni who are trailblazers in the tech field. Additionally, there will be a hands-on showcase with interactive activities. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and network with women working in tech, gaining valuable insights and connections. This event is for everyone, from high school and college students to emerging leaders and seasoned professionals, who want to learn more about the tech industry and network with like-minded individuals.

Mallory Russell leads UE at The Velvet

 SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – With two out of three rounds complete at The Velvet Championship, Mallory Russell leads the University of Evansville women’s golf team at the Country Club of Paducah.

Russell opened the tournament with a on Monday with a 5-over 77 before carding a 78 in the second round.  Her total of 155 is tied for 16th heading into Tuesday’s final 18 holes.  Following her was Louise Standtke.  Identical scores of 78 gave her a 156 for the day, tying her for 19th.

Elizabeth Mercer is third for the Purple Aces with a 157.  She opened the day with a 78 before recording a 79.  She heads into the final round tied for 24th.  Fourth on the team was Jane Grainkina.  After posting an 85, Grankina lowered her score to a 79 and is tied for 52nd with a 164.  Trinity Dubbs was fifth with a 165.  Her rounds finished at 79 and 86.

The individual standings are led by Caroline Patterson of UNC Asheville.  She followed up a 74 with a 4-under 68 to complete the day with a 142.  She is two ahead of her nearest competition.

Austin Peay holds the team lead by 16 strokes over UNC Asheville.  Evansville is in 7th place, just two behind a fifth-place tie.

In his 35+ years with WFIE, Jeff has visited every county in the Tri-State and routinely speaks 40-50 times each year at schools, community groups, and church organizations.   He has been an active board member at The Arc of Evansville since 2000, and co-wrote, produced, and hosted The Really Big Show for 21 years.  The show was a major fundraiser for ARC and raised over 1.5 million dollars for the organization.  Jeff served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Southern Indiana for 17 years and taught broadcast performance in the school’s communications department.

Created the first Veterans Treatment Court in the State of Indiana. Acquired two magistrate positions from the state legislature for Vanderburgh County. He spearheaded and created an electronic search warrant in Vanderburgh County. Created the Vanderburgh County Therapeutic Work Release Program. It brought $5.5 million of court space renovations to Vanderburgh County. He was awarded the James Bethel Gresham Freedom Award from the Evansville Bar. Association.

Another of Evansville’s 100-year-old buildings went up in flames over the weekend. Fire engulfed the Pike’s Mattress Factory on Division Street Saturday afternoon. The Pike family has been making and selling mattresses at this location for four generations.

The smoke from the burning building was visible throughout the city while firefighters struggled to get the fire under control. A total of 60 firefighters were involved in battling the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

In recent years, Evansville has experienced several historic buildings burning down. One location, the old Pearl Laundry facility, burned in May 2023, but the rubble was left unfenced for over seven months until someone fell and was seriously injured. The city and landowners recently reached an agreement to clear the lot. Another hundred-year-old warehouse on Morton Avenue burned in 2022, leaving acres of piles of metal and bricks, and the city has not required that the area be fenced for safety.

After the fire investigation, how long will the city allow the rubble from the fire to remain?
