FORMER EVANSVILLE ICEMEN MAKING JACKSONVILLE PROUD

FORMER EVANSVILLE ICEMEN MAKING JACKSONVILLE PROUD

The temperature dropped in October as the Icemen got off to the hottest start in the League. The Icemen are currently the only undefeated team remaining in the ECHL. They are ranked 1st in the South Division, and 3rd in the League with 10 points (only four points behind 1st place Adirondack that has played nine games, which is four more than Jacksonville.) They lead the ECHL in goals-against (1.80) and goals-for (4.40) and their power play record is ranked 3rd.

Alexis D’Aoust and Wacey Rabbit have been integral in the success, both recording points in every game played. Alexis D’Aoust received the Inglasco ECHL Player of Week for his efforts last week recording seven points in three games. The defense has also been clutch, as the Icemen rank 2nd in the League in shots-against (27.20). Goaltending has been impressive as rookie Mikhail Berdin was reassigned to Manitoba after a 3-0 start for the Icemen and Tanner Jaillet has a 2-0 start in his rookie campaign. Jaillet’s efforts got him noticed as runner-up for Inglasco ECHL Goaltender of the Week. He’s tied for 3rd in the ECHL with a 1.50 goals-against average.

IN ONE PENNSYLVANIA CITY, A STREET STREET FIGHT FOR EVERY VOTE

IN ONE PENNSYLVANIA CITY, A STREET STREET FIGHT FOR EVERY VOTE
by John L. Micek, for Cagel News
October 29, 2018

READING, Pa. – Paula Hass, as one former American president so often says, is fired up and ready to go.

Standing in her doorway on a rainy and chilly Saturday, Hass, a registered Democrat, says she “always votes.”

“I’ve voted all my life,” she says with a grin. “I’ve been voting since I was 18 years old. The only Republican in my family is my little brother – we have no idea where he came from.”

Becky Ellis, Christian Cortes, and Raya Abdelaal, canvassers for Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Votes, the political wing of the women’s reproductive health organization, smile back and thank Hass for her time.

Then they’re down the steps, back into the rain, and onto the next door. They’ve been at this for about an hour. With 30 doors to knock on this late October afternoon, they’ll be at it for another hour, at least.

From house to house, Ellis, Cortes, and Abdelaal repeat a single task over and over again: They pull a voter’s name from a tablet computer; ask that voter how excited they are to be voting, ask them if they know where their polling place is, and ask them if they have a plan to vote.

If they answer “no” to any of those questions, the volunteers identify a local polling place and then an offer to help get that voter to the polls on Election Day. It’s exacting work. And, sometimes, people don’t want to talk.

Democrats need to flip 23 seats to retake control of the U.S. House in 2019. With competitive contests across the state, Pennsylvania could hand Democrats up to a third of the seats they need to reach that critical tally.

Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Votes is spending $2.5 million to re-elect Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf and other down-ballot Democrats. Working with other advocacy organizations, the group plans to knock on some 775,000 doors in 32 counties statewide between Oct. 23 and Election Day in an effort to turn out the vote.

“With a more conservative Supreme Court, abortion access and reproductive rights in this country are in danger. It is critical that we elect champions for reproductive health care who will protect these freedoms in Pennsylvania,” Sari Stevens, the executive director of Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Votes, said.

The canvassing effort on this Saturday afternoon is focused on a particularly important voting bloc: Latino voters whom Democrats count as a critical constituency.

Latino voters are a growing – and increasingly youthful – a voting bloc that will make up an ever greater share of the electorate in years to come. And that means the competition to claim them is intense.

Reading is 68 percent Latino, which means it’s rich in potential Democratic votes. And the push here is “the only LatinX outreach program in the northeast,” Stevens said.

Republicans are making a similar outreach effort.

Jason Gottesman, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Republican Party, said in August that the Keystone GOP planned to “[contact] hundreds of thousands of voters throughout Pennsylvania – many of whom are Hispanic voters that share the Republican Party’s principles of religious freedom, and who have also benefited from the booming economy that has resulted in record low Hispanic unemployment.”

The staging ground for the Planned Parenthood effort is the headquarters of a local outreach group called “Save Our Inner City Lives.” As a disc jockey spins vibrant Latino music, volunteers hold plates heaped with rice and beans, jerked chicken and roasted plantains – fuel for the afternoon’s work.

“My family was involved in politics,” says Juan Zabala, who owns the space. “If we solve the problems in our community, we can scale up and solve things on the grander level.”

To further motivate the volunteers, actor Laura Gomez, of the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black,” has traveled down from New York City to lend her voice.

As a young immigrant from the Dominican Republic without health coverage, Gomez says she took advantage of the breast cancer screenings and other health services that Planned Parenthood offers to its mostly low-income clientele.

“This feels very personal to me,” she said. “Every woman has a Planned Parenthood story.”

Ellis, the canvassing volunteer, has one of her own. As a college student, then newly married to a Chilean man, Planned Parenthood helped out when she suddenly discovered she was pregnant. Her daughter, Katarina, now 17, was born healthy and is a freshman in college.

“Planned Parenthood was there for a girl who didn’t have medical insurance,” she said.

Then she’s off. There are still plenty of doors to knock. And not a lot of time to do it.

William Becker To Discontinue Basketball Career

UE Freshman To Leave Program Due To Medical Reasons

Due to medical reasons, University of Evansville freshman men’s basketball player William Becker will leave the Purple Aces program and is retiring from the sport of college basketball.

“William has worked exhaustively with our medical staff and orthopedic specialists to get back on the floor,” Aces Director of Athletics Mark Spencer said. “Unfortunately, he has not been able to make the progression that we all hoped for.”

Evansville head men’s basketball coach Walter McCarty echoed those sentiments.

“We support William and his decision to retire from the sport of basketball,” McCarty said.  “He is a great kid and we wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Per University of Evansville policy, when a student-athlete voluntarily withdraws from a team and is receiving athletics aid, the University Financial Aid Office provides the student-athlete with confirmation.

The student-athlete has 14 days from the written notification to submit a request to appeal the aid decision.  The final date to do so for Becker was Tuesday, October 30.  The decision became official at the completion of that date.

“Unfortunately, injuries have made it impossible for me to continue my career in the sport of college basketball,” Becker said.  “I want to thank Coach McCarty and the University of Evansville for giving me the opportunity to play at the Division I level.”

USI Moves Into Region Rankings At #10

University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team moved into the NCAA Division II Midwest Region poll for the first time and the region polls for the first time since 1999, entering at number 10. The last time women’s soccer was ranked regionally was in 1999 when USI was a part of the NCAA II Central Region.

The Midwest Region is led by Grand Valley State University, Ferris State University, Ohio Valley University, Saginaw Valley State University, and McKendree University in the top five. USI trails Walsh University, Ashland University, Truman State University, and Trevecca Nazarene University in the bottom five to the poll.

The top eight team at the end of the season earn a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament with the regionals slated for November 8-11.

The Screaming Eagles, which grabbed a share of the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season crown for the first time last week, continue conference tournament action Friday at 5 p.m. (CDT) when they take on Rockhurst University in the semifinals at Woehrle Athletic Complex in Jeffersonville, Indiana. USI entered the league’s post-season as the third seed, while Rockhurst is the seventh seed.

A GLVC Tournament championship would give USI the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA II Tournament. The GLVC Tournament championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. (CST) in Jeffersonville if the Eagles advance.

Statement from UE Athletics and Director of Athletics Mark Spencer

0

The University of Evansville Athletics Department and Director of Athletics Mark Spencer have released the following statement and timeline of events in regards to the column written this week by Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post Dispatch regarding former Aces men’s basketball player Dru Smith and his transfer to the University of Missouri.

Current NCAA rules in regards to men’s basketball transfers dictate that the student-athlete is required to sit out for a year in residency prior to being eligible to compete at the new institution.  There is currently no active legislation being proposed for this rule to change.  If the student-athlete wanted to seek immediate eligibility, it would be incumbent on the new institution to submit a waiver to the NCAA with supporting documentation.

On Tuesday, October 9th, 2018, the University of Missouri compliance department reached out to the University of Evansville compliance department wishing to discuss their intention to submit a waiver to the NCAA to request the immediate eligibility of Dru Smith.  UM specifically asked if UE would support the claim that Dru would meet the “run off’ standard regarding the new coaching staff.

The “run off” standard is when a coaching staff communicates to the student-athlete that they will not have their financial aid renewed and they would not have a place on the team.

UE responded that we did not believe the “run off” standard would apply given the fact that Dru voluntarily withdrew from the program on April 3rdand that the University of Evansville had offered to renew his financial aid and the new coaching staff had offered a roster spot to Dru.

On Thursday, October 25th, after filing the waiver with the NCAA, the University of Missouri compliance department again reached out to the University of Evansville compliance department regarding the waiver. UM inquired if UE had ever communicated to Dru our intentions to NOT renew his scholarship.

UE responded by pointing out that in a meeting on March 14th with UE Senior Associate AD Sarah Solinsky and Director of Athletics Mark Spencer, all of the student-athletes with the UE men’s basketball program would be given the opportunity to sign their financial aid agreements for the following year securing their scholarship regardless of the coaching change.

In subsequent conversations once the new coaching staff was hired, all of the student-athletes were again presented with the opportunity to retain their scholarships and solidify their place in the program.

The UM compliance director then alluded to the claim that the new coaching staff did not directly engage in communications with Dru. UE responded that they could also not support that claim, as UE head men’s basketball coach Walter McCarty, his staff and the entire athletic department went to great lengths to communicate with all of the student-athletes throughout the transition. The student-athletes were included in the hiring process and Dru Smith was outspoken throughout that process in his support of the hiring of Coach McCarty.

On Thursday, March 29th, six days after the announcement of the hiring of Coach McCarty, Dru Smith sent an email to Director of Athletics Mark Spencer informing him that he had made his decision to transfer.  Smith’s exact reasoning was “mainly because the opportunities that I have are too hard to pass up.”

The University of Evansville Athletics Department factually answered the questions submitted by the University of Missouri compliance department in preparation for the waiver request on Dru Smith’s behalf.  UE declined to support inaccurate claims that represented the University of Evansville, the athletic department, Coach McCarty and his staff in a negative light.

Outside of the communication that is outlined above, the University of Evansville has not had any communication or impact on the waiver that was submitted by the University of Missouri to the NCAA.
