“A Flight To Remember” Captures The Veterans Special Visit To Washington, D.C.

The 9th Honor Flight to took off out of Evansville Regional Airport and returned home just one week ago.

44News Anchor Lauren Leslie had the honor of following our veterans to capture the special visit on camera. From a warm welcome in Washington to a big welcome home in the Tri-State. Lauren was there to capture every moment.
Some veterans spoke out about why this trip was so important to them.

Jackie Wood says, “To get off the plane was emotional well you know it’s hard to explain but it’s just a wonderful feeling.” While George Meece Jr. stated, “We didn’t get this when we came home from the service When I came home from Korea, we didn’t get that so all of those people which were kids from schools and everything else that really stuck with me.”

“A Flight To Remember” is a 3 part series and will be airing on Veteran’s Day. Join us Sunday at Nine and Ten for a full recap of the 9th Honor Flight to our nation’s capital.

Connecting Veterans To Valuable Services

Navigating veteran benefits can sometimes be a daunting task, but local veteran service officers are ready to help.

These officers answer questions, advise in decision making, and help identify benefits from various federal, state, county and local resources. In addition, they assist in filling out claims along with representation and presentation at veteran affairs hearings.

Trained and accredited by the VA or another recognized organization, veteran service officers provide assistance to veterans, their dependents and survivors, along with help in the following areas: compensation and pension; health care; education and training; employment; burial and survivor resources; housing; transportation; and military records.

Judge Lets Tippecanoe Right to Life Free Speech Case Proceed

0

Olivia Covington for www.theindianalawyer.com

A Tippecanoe County anti-abortion group’s free speech lawsuit against the local public transportation company will continue after a district court judge denied Greater Lafayette Public Transportation Corporation’s motion for judgment on the pleadings.

Tippecanoe County Right to Life sued the public transportation company, known as CityBus after CityBus general manager Martin Sennett denied Right to Life’s request to place an ad on the side of local buses. The ad consisted of three images: an ultrasound of an early-stage fetus with the word “Me,” an ultrasound of a developing fetus with the words “Me, again,” and a newborn baby with the words “Still me.”

Sennett denied the requested ad because it expressed a political viewpoint, which he said was in violation of CityBus’ advertising policy. Right to Life, however, filed a suit alleging a First Amendment violation.

CityBus moved for judgment on the pleadings, arguing that because it offers an advertising appeals process that was not used here, Tippecanoe County Right to Life is not challenging a final decision. But Indiana Northern District Judge Joseph S. Van Bokkelen denied that motion, noting that the appeals process is an administrative remedy.

“The disposition of CityBus’s motion to dismiss TCRTL’s complaint hinges on whether the appeal process is a step in arriving at a final decision, in which case the rejection of the ad without appeal would not be a final decision, or an administrative remedy for a decision already made, which need not be pursued before filing a section 1983 action,” Van Bokkelen wrote.
“There is no doubt that Sennett’s initial decision to reject the ad amounted to a definitive position that inflicted an actual, concrete injury and that CityBus’s appeal procedure is an administrative remedy for one aggrieved by such a decision,” he continued, referring to Williamson County Regional Planning Comm’n v. Hamilton Bank, 473 U.S. 172, 193 (1985). “Thus, TCRTL was not required to resort to that procedure before bringing this section 1983 action.”

The case is Tippecanoe County Right to Life Inc. v. Greater Lafayette Public Transportation Corporation, d/b/a CityBus, 4:18-cv-52.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month

0

November is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month – a month focused on a disease that claims the lives of 1.6 million people annually, according to the World Health Organization. Below please find important information on lung cancer awareness.  If you’d like to speak to one of our St. Vincent Medical Group providers for more details on this subject, please call me at 812-485-4897 or email me at Emily.Hurless@ascension.org and I can assist in arranging an interview.

Lung Cancer Can Be a Silent Killer

Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.

Here are some quick facts about this silent killer:

  • According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women (not counting skin cancer) and is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women.
  • Lung cancer is commonly associated with people who smoke, but the reality is not everyone who smokes gets cancer.
  • Most lung cancers do not cause any symptoms until they have spread, but some people with early lung cancer do have symptoms. If you go to your doctor when you first notice symptoms, your cancer might be diagnosed at an earlier stage, when treatment is more likely to be effective.

The 9 most common symptoms of lung cancer are:

  1. A cough that does not go away or gets worse
  2. Coughing up blood or rust-colored spit or phlegm
  3. Chest pain that is often worse with deep breathing, coughing, or laughing
  4. Hoarseness
  5. Weight loss and loss of appetite
  6. Shortness of breath
  7. Feeling tired or weak
  8. Infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia that don’t go away or keep coming back
  9. New onset of wheezing

While many of these symptoms may be caused by something other than lung cancer, it’s important to see your doctor right away so the cause can be found and treated, if needed.

To speak with a St. Vincent doctor about the best methods of lung cancer prevention and early detection, contact me atEmily.Hurless@ascension.org or 812-485-4897.
