AG Curtis Hill: On 55th anniversary of JFK’s death, let’s remember his calls for civility

0

Attorney General Curtis Hill has written an op-ed commemorating President John F. Kennedy 55 years after his death on Nov. 22, 1963 – expressing particular appreciation for Kennedy’s belief in civility.

“It’s a sad irony that Kennedy’s death itself served as a unifying event in America as virtually the whole country came together to mourn the loss of their fallen president,” Attorney General Hill writes. “In much the same way, other largescale tragic events – such as the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the 9-11 terrorist attacks – have given rise to national unity.”

He adds: “We need to come together now – as one nation under God, indivisible – rather than waiting until the galvanizing effects of some new crisis or moment of great loss.”

Attorney General Hill’s op-ed is attached to this release for use by any outlet wishing to publish it. As a courtesy, please email Deputy Communications Director Bill McCleery at bill.mccleery@atg.in.gov if you choose to publish this op-ed.

USI SeaPerch Sponsorship

The University of Southern Indiana’s Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education and the SwISTEM Resource Center are offering a SeaPerch Sponsorship Program for up to ten (10) SeaPerch teams. Schools and organizations in southwestern Indiana, southeastern Illinois, and western Kentucky that are facing financial hardship in purchasing materials to participate in the SeaPerch Program are encouraged to apply.  This program will supply one SeaPerch kit per team ($179) and a USI Regional SeaPerch Challenge registration fee waiver ($50). Priority will be given to new SeaPerch coaches/teams but that should not keep seasoned teams from applying.  Teams must commit to competition in the 2019 USI SeaPerch Challenge.  The deadline to apply is December 7, 2018.  Awardees will be notified on December 14, 2018.  Click here for a link to the application form. More information about the SeaPerch Program can be found at SeaPerch.org.

VHS Black Friday Adoption Special

0

To help move solid black dogs & cats out of the shelter and get them into homes in time for the holidays, VHS is jumping on the Black Friday bandwagon and reducing these animals’ adoption fees by HALF.

This means that black dogs will be adoptable for $55, black/mostly black cats for $20, black/mostly black kittens for $30, and black/mostly black rabbits for $20. This includes spay/neuter surgery and a registered microchip for all animals, plus vaccinations, testing, and deworming for dogs & cats.

The VHS loses money on every single adoption, even at regular price. Regular fees (double the amounts above) don’t even begin to cover the cost of each animal’s stay. Each animal receives over $200 worth of care on its first day in the shelter, not to mention the daily cost of food, medication, staff wages, overhead, and more. These costs are offset by monetary donations from the public, as the VHS does not receive any support whatsoever from city or county taxes or any national agencies such as HSUS or ASPCA.

The shelter currently has more than 60 dogs, 20 rabbits, and 200 cats in its care. Plenty of these animals are black or mostly black, with more scheduled to come in each day.

Doors open at 12:00 noon on Friday, November 23rd for the Black Friday “doorbusters.” Adoption hours are 12:00-6:00 Friday & Saturday. Families interested in adopting should stop by the shelter during these hours to fill out an adoption application and visit with animals. Adoption fees are payable with cash, Visa, Mastercard, or Discover. Any approved family can adopt from the VHS, regardless of whether or not they live in Vanderburgh County. People regularly travel from out of state to adopt pets. Please keep in mind that pets who are not yet spayed or neutered cannot leave the building until surgery is complete. This is included in the adoption fee.

All available animals can be viewed online at www.vhslifesaver.org/adopt.

JUST IN: Duckworth Will Not Seek Recount In Vanderburgh Commissioner Race

0

Vanderburgh County Commissioner candidate Mike Duckworth has announced that he will not seek a recount in the Commissioner District 2 race.  The Republican candidate lost the race to Democrat Jeff Hatfield by 224 votes earlier this month in the general election

Campaign for Mike Duckworth for Commissioner released the following statement:

“As many of you know, I have been reviewing the election results in the extremely close race for Vanderburgh County Commissioner.  First, I want to be clear that I never questioned the integrity of the vote counting process.  However, in an election decided by less than one half of one percent of the total vote, I felt I owed it to all of my supporters to conduct a thorough review of all of the election data.  After such review, I have decided not to ask for a recount.  I want to take this opportunity to once again thank all of the people who voted for me and supported my campaign as well as congratulate Jeff Hatfield on his election to the County Commission.”
